Charming Baker ๐ฌ๐ง Paintings โข Print Release โข For Sale , by HRE on Jul 9, 2011 18:51:28 GMT 1, It was a lovely space to walk around not too busy when i went early on in the morning so was nice to take some time and look at the OGs, the prints have been flying out the door so I would be quick if you want something. The quality of them is lovely really like the bunny it was on really thick stock and very glossy to look at.
Met Baker he seemed very nice and a bit overwhelmed by all the attention that he has been getting. They had plenty of signed goodie bags when I was there and some catalogue which are really nicely printed.

Charming Baker ๐ฌ๐ง Paintings โข Print Release โข For Sale , by Deleted on Jul 9, 2011 21:34:52 GMT 1, What about the people that like the art? Too few to be significant enough to wipe entire inventory out in minutes.
Or perhaps a shift away from 'urban' stencil art into a genre which is technically more able?

I read an article in the Sun that was suggesting Robbie Williams should be following Noel Gallagher's lead and 'invest' in 'brilliant' artist Charming Baker! I'm not joking by the way!

Charming Baker ๐ฌ๐ง Paintings โข Print Release โข For Sale , by motor on Jul 12, 2011 15:28:47 GMT 1, After being somewhat critical in my initial post I went down to check it for myself. It looks very good, as many said before. Not entirely my cuppa but mister has proper talent and with the body of work on the show he delivers. The space is fantastic. People from the Jealous Gallery did a very good job. Still don't get the prices for his originals but who cares if they can find the right buyers. Good for the gallery and even better for ChB.
Funny that MonkeyGTH mentioned that Micallef was checking the show. I wonder what he was thinking. He was in the similar position few years back... I would say that people around ChB have learned a lesson from AM's career ups and downs (not talking about their art skills here). Saying that I am very much looking forward to the new AM show.

No doubting either's ability.

Charming Baker ๐ฌ๐ง Paintings โข Print Release โข For Sale , by shosho on Jul 13, 2011 0:55:55 GMT 1, I don't normally post but feel inclined to after reading these posts. First of all well done to Charming Baker I'm sure he deserves every success. However people getting excited about Alberto Mugrabi, Frank Cohen or Hirst buying the work are insane. Don't forget Hirst collects hype he has no influence as a collector and as for Alberto Mugrabi yes his family own an extensive collection of Warhols, Hirsts, Basquiats and Prince's etc, but they are not tastemakers neither is Frank Cohen. These people buying the work is actually off putting and could affect charming long term. Anyway my issue isn't really with those guys but With the sheep mentality that a lot of collectors have, it happened with Micallef, Parla, Dface, What the fuk does Noel Gallagher know about art the only reason people are getting excited is because they have another pipe dream in the making. Remember when parla canvases were going or 60 k or when Jude Law and micheal stipe were buying Micallefs for higher amounts, or perhaps when Christina A was buying up Dface? It doesn't mean a thing if your going to follow reputable collectors do your Homework or better yet buy Chamings work because you like it. I personally don't get it what makes it so good? I'll tell you.... friggin speculation. Chamings saving grace may be the fact he is part of the establishment as he went to central ST martins which separates him from the majority of other artists that are collected on this forum. However it's still no reason to buy unless you really love it. Hirst brougt Paul Insects show didn't he, where is he now? Congratulations to all the true Baker fans who believed and collected from day one I'm sure it feels great to have that confidence in someone and see it come to fruition. To everyone else you should be ashamed of yourselves!

Charming Baker ๐ฌ๐ง Paintings โข Print Release โข For Sale , by hanky on Jul 13, 2011 9:03:34 GMT 1, Shosho Don't sit on the fence say what you mean! Have to agree we should all buy art because we like it! I think many artists have been badly represented by galleries/agents eg Micallef, Neate. For some of us that represents an opportunity to acquire some good art. Neate prints for ยฃ300 seems a good buy to me for instance! I think Charming is being well looked after with prints at ยฃ75 and ยฃ300 allowing entry level and canvases going for considerably more. Having popped into the show it is well worth the visit and you could still pick up a signed show poster if that's what your after.

Charming Baker ๐ฌ๐ง Paintings โข Print Release โข For Sale , by Jeezuz Jones Snr on Jul 13, 2011 10:08:21 GMT 1, some good posts
'talking of ups & downs'.. I remember the Nick Walker show at BRP guys in their 60's walking around buying up a stencil OG for 25k pounds... Now they are worth probably 5k or less. Seems its all about the team behind you,PR,spin, advertsing, putting shows on etc.. and maintaining it. I dont know all the Bansky history back in the day, but did Hirst do a similar thing ie. buy up loads of his works/hype him up and spread the word etc.... ??

Agreed
I don't necessarily think it's hard to build / hype an artist up to the level and prices that CB is now operating at. It's the Charles Saatchi effect, which applies to many of those circling at the upper end of the market (including the likes of Hirst, Mugrabi etc, the list is pretty long!).
What I find interesting is how his management now keep him at that level, or per JJ's post, how they maintain the level of interest and more importantly, prices. A few big names buying some work willl not guarantee longevity for CB, although having sold out this show, I would have thought he's nicely set up for later life!
So, what will keep CB at this level, or more importantly, move him further up the 'ladder'? A huge auction result (this is something that, if it happened, wouldn't surprise me, not that I'm cynical!), representation with one of the larger galleries?? It'll be interesting to follow either way...

I particularly liked 'Love Is Never Needing Any Help If You Are Intent On Staying Ignorant' which he also done a print of before (http://charmingbaker.com/prints/59/).
The 'c**t struck' canvas too, was very well executed. As was the 'f*cker* print, following the same design.

Are you suggesting that those with a vested interest in increasing the values of their purchases would artificialy inflate the value of them through a rigged auction. Well I'll be.

Thanks for posting Fragile; the above statement confused me a little - does this suggest his management team aren't effectively acting as dealers / gallerists and taking their cut. I dont' think so!

Nice touch for CB and Jealous to do the posters for free. Think the Everything Must Go part of the poster was screen printed and done in various colours.
