Framing decisions, decisions....!, by marwood on Feb 18, 2013 14:37:05 GMT 1, OK so have sent a few pieces off to Gary for framing recently and now trying (& failing) to make final decisions about frames so thought I'd see what the thoughts of you guys were & also to see if anyone had framed up their versions of these prints & if so which direction you've gone in.....
So doing Mr Jago 'Fuel from Fumes' & simply trying to decide on white box or black box - not too difficult you'd have thought, but I seem to change my mind every time I look at the below - It will be floated to the edge and will have white spacer if using white frame, or a charcoal coloured one if going black. Thoughts?
Next up 3 Sirens AP - again decision is pretty much a white box with a light or dark blue spacer (picking the colour out from the print) or a black box perhaps with a red spacer. Would be floated on a black or white background depending on frame colour.
Have used a bit of basic photoshop on a couple of pics I found on here - I hope that's OK with the owners!!
More to frame too, but let's start with these 2 as they're giving me the biggest headache! Would really appreciate any advice/thoughts. Thanks! Marwood

Framing decisions, decisions....!, by alittle on Feb 18, 2013 14:50:00 GMT 1, I think it is very hard to go wrong with white or black frames. Personally, I like a black frame, but I do notice a lot of folks around here use white, which looks great too. All personal preference in my opinion. With that being said, I do not like the last mock up for 3 Sirens. Not sure if it is just an issue with the mock up. but it almost looks like there is a fillet. A black frame and black mat would look fine though.

I agree, think is gives the print more prominence, that said it depends on the walls too - you can always add a fillet to make things a little more bespoke!? Both prints are fantastic BTW...

Framing decisions, decisions....!, by marwood on Feb 19, 2013 13:19:20 GMT 1, Thanks for the input guys, I appreciate it! They are both great prints as you say and I intend to be looking at them for a while, so want to make sure I get them as I want them.
I think the black frame with the print floated to the edge of the frame (no gap or mount) for the Jago is probably the classic way to go and would look good as the dark frame gives a kind of boundary to the image which the white doesn't.
For the Hush I'm thinking much though I'd like to do all black (with perhaps a red spacer) the whole thing then becomes quite dark & kind of spooky (!) which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but on balance I'll probably go for white on white with the light blue spacer..... Or will I...!

Framing decisions, decisions....!, by ilmambo on Feb 19, 2013 13:26:55 GMT 1, I went for a black frame (3 cm front, 2.5 cm deep), framed to the edge and white spacers for my Jago.
hope it helps, if you want other pics let me know.

Framing decisions, decisions....!, by ilmambo on Feb 19, 2013 13:45:29 GMT 1, no worries. just FIY, since you mentioned him, Gary did that job. I mounted the print myself, I didn't want to float mount it so it's just fit to the edges "resting" on acid free white spacers (that match the white border of the print).

Framing decisions, decisions....!, by marwood on Feb 19, 2013 13:52:07 GMT 1, Interesting.... Yes I was thinking of doing a similar thing, although Gary suggested floating it, then framing to the edge and using (off-white) spacers - I will probably go for spacers to match the print border like you though. So the print is not actually attached to anything on yours? Will ask Gary about whether he can do that/would advise it & see what he thinks, but I like the idea of the print not being damaged at all (even using archival hinges, etc) & just being held by the spacers. Might do the same with the Hush, although that has no border....

Framing decisions, decisions....!, by ilmambo on Feb 19, 2013 13:59:54 GMT 1, When I spoke with Gary he explained to me that when framed to the edge they usually float mount the print on a board slightly larger than the paper size, so nothing is lost in the frame rebate and the print doesn't touch the frame.
That said is fine for the print to be on lined/acid free spacers (on my frame the spacers are acid free and the inside of the frame has been lined with acid free tape).
So to answer your question yes, the print is just held between the spacers and the backing board, no tape or anything else. Also, the frame I used is 3x3 cm not 3x2.5 as said before.

Framing decisions, decisions....!, by Gard on Feb 19, 2013 14:37:42 GMT 1, Go with the white frames. Personally I think black frames take to much of the focus away from the motives.
