Why do Banksy - CYWs sell for so much? Is it because they are signed editions of 25? Because there are a ton of Keith Haring fans out there? Because Banksy hasn't released much of anything in the past 2 years? Or something else?
I consider myself to be an educated Banksy collector, and know a lot about his prints / market, but I don't understand why these prints change hands for so much money. For the type of money these change hands for I'd take an old "classic" Banksy print 10 times out of 10.
Would love to hear your thoughts..

Editions of 25 probably mean many collectors have more than 1 unlike some of the other editions despite the fact that there are still ~600 similar images. I think it also helps that the print quality is outstanding (to my untrained eye) compared with some of the previous images and those colors are quite lush on the wall. Like you, I'm surprised they've made that perceived jump this quickly but those are the best suppositions I have. Well, all that aside from the fact that I think it's a great image.

An old trick , and its working Totally agree with exception of a couple of dubious auction results they're not that expensive in the wider context. What's happening is due to these very outrageous auction wins and we are about 3 times what was the accepted normal price, suddenly many owners are thinking there's a quick few quid to be made, hence the sudden surge in trading |

Banksy - CYW, by DrWhite on Mar 5, 2013 23:08:17 GMT 1, I like the variety of colour available in the CYW prints, many of the older prints can be a little muted & as pointed out above the image is strong with the nod to haring, and great quality compared to some of the earlier prints. Those 3 auction results have certainly raised a few eyebrows though.

CYW is still cheaper than some of his old classics. I wish a signed Love Rat went for ยฃ5000. BTW, if anyone has a signed Love Rat, for ยฃ5,000 let me know. 
It could be a comboniation of low numbered editions, signed, great image, and possibly Banksy's last print release....

Would agree. Small editions of 25 don't really apply when there are so many colour ways many of which are weak colours. Not sure the total CYWs out there but must be 300 or so. I would understand a greater value in a rare colour way.

There was a lot of hype (as ever with Banksy), which continues to an extent, and I guess because they're editions of 25... but artists like Faile would call them a varied Edition of... (how many are there? 350? More?).

Back of the napkin math suggests over 500 when including AP's (such as dark blue above) spread across a wide color wheel.

All totals 621.

No offence but that's a pretty shit house!
What will be interesting will be to re-visit this in 10 years time. The entire urban art market is a bubble with 'investors' at the bottom end seeking a return of sorts. I'm also sure that there will be those whose work remains collectable but the price attached to prints is staggering to the point where I might have to consider selling the kids Kates.....

But I would point out that in many ways compared to buying prints from the previous generations of artists the prices are not terribly out of line.. check the prices of warhols prints .. Haring .. Lichtenstein .. Even Miro .. Picasso . Now do any current artists belong in that list 20 years on? .. Who knows .. But if they do then why not buy now and enjoy it.
