Sculptures by Dr. Freakinstyle, by freakinstyle on Nov 2, 2013 18:18:44 GMT 1, Found a full time job for a couple of months so difficult to keep this up, but I finally finished a new sculpture, a decorated sheep skull!
Again an attempt on making something cool and good looking AND trying to say something...my ultimate challenge!
Title: 'What drives you?' Theme: Individuality against human systems in this case legal systems.
I really wanted to finish this on The Day of the Dead or Dias de los Muertos.....pfff done it.

Sculptures by Dr. Freakinstyle, by freakinstyle on Nov 10, 2013 20:01:16 GMT 1, Just a question, something I have been thinking about for a while; people have suggested before that I should have a webshop. But there are many ways of doing that. To decide what to do, I wondered why people have suggested that. Do they think I would sell more? Or would they feel more safe buying through a known model like Bigcartel or is it a different problem that I need to solve by setting a webshop up.
So far I have avoided creating one on my site, because I can't spend money on someone making the code for it and just thought people can mail me with what they want and then take it from there, or is that naive?
Thanks for the comments! All appreciated, but can't promise I will act accordingly because I have too much of my own ways...hahaha, but it doesn't mean I would deeply consider your suggestion though!

Sculptures by Dr. Freakinstyle, by Manty on Nov 10, 2013 20:25:57 GMT 1, Big cartel works for me
If I see a couple of links from an artist whose work i like, i click on it, and look at the art. If i like it and can buy it, great. If not and i have to contact the artist, my 'instant gratification gene' is not satisfied, so I move on and do something else, thinking i'll contact them another time. usually that other time doesn't happen.
If its a big cartel site, perfect, i'm off and running, I can buy the thing i like and get it pretty quick, my gene is sated :-)
I think big cartel is pretty easy and cheap to set up?
Good luck with what ever you decide

Sculptures by Dr. Freakinstyle, by DameHoracia on Nov 10, 2013 21:01:45 GMT 1, I think maybe people suggest having a shop because it puts you out there in a global market place. That's not saying you don't have to work hard at getting people to find your store once you have one. But it isn't such a bad idea unless you really want to stay exclusive, word of mouth and get enough business through selling the way you have always done.
There are loads of professional market places to sell from like Big Cartel, Esty, Misi (UK based), Folksy (UK) and plenty more (they take a fee by the way). If you did want to have something built then it's simple enough to learn how to do that yourself using Joomla, Mambo, wordpress or one of the many open source content management systems out there for free and communities that give back up for tech info etc.
You never know, in the future you may feel you want a base/store front to promote yourself from. I personally think having a store is a nice idea for those that like to browse. I find it frustrating when there are no prices available or when the site looks or calls itself a shop and there's no way to purchase. By the time an artist/or gallery gets back to me, sometimes, I have already changed my mind. I much prefer seeing the item/piece of work, a price and having a way to buy then and there.

Sculptures by Dr. Freakinstyle, by freakinstyle on Nov 10, 2013 21:14:35 GMT 1, Thanks! Yeah, know a lot of the alternatives. I have registered myself on some 'ebay-type' websites, but those don't do anything as long as you don't use your URL a lot, because it is hard for people to find you on for example Etsy, because it is filled to the brim with artwork with similar keywords. I don't use URLs of those sites because I already have a site and want to use that as a 'catalogue'. On my site I added the prices as more people responded like you about not finding any prices.
Ok, so see now 3 variations on this theme; - Ebay type site, like Etsy - Site with no specific marketplace, like bigcartel - Build your own, like Joomla (have to explore this more)
Thanks!

Sculptures by Dr. Freakinstyle, by freakinstyle on Nov 11, 2013 10:00:48 GMT 1, Thanks Wiz! Have been checking Bigcartel and see how to incorporate a webshop in my current site. Last thing is the nicest way, but either costs money or a lot of time.

Sculptures by Dr. Freakinstyle, by Manty on Nov 11, 2013 21:58:16 GMT 1, So have you done it yet?
Why not?
<evil laugh>
I am looking to go online with my business, e-commerce blah blah, got about 500 products all boring and dull, yet everyone needs them when things break, so a good potential to move into this business - consumer market, at the moment its all off line B2B.
It does seem like hard work setting it all up, so hard in fact I think i've just convinced myself to shelve again for a year or 2 :-)

Sculptures by Dr. Freakinstyle, by freakinstyle on Dec 2, 2013 15:12:31 GMT 1, So set up a Bigcartel site! drfreakinstyle.bigcartel.com
At the moment no time or money to do it properly by creating a webshop in my own site.
So Manty, yes sort ofโฆ And yes, most people seem to want boring stuff in life. I guess those are generally more of a priority or they are more save/familiar.

Sculptures by Dr. Freakinstyle, by freakinstyle on Dec 23, 2013 11:55:59 GMT 1, โฆoh and on a different note and I find this quite interesting: People have said to me things like; oh, this is really great that you do a lot with skulls because there is a real trend going on about skulls, like in fashion. First thought of me was 'wow' how cool, second thought 'f*ck I am mainstream'. Anyway, so I was at a fair with my work and decided to count the amount of people that wear skulls on their clothes or accessories and see how many of them would show interest in my table. Had 6 skulls clearly visible. Really 90% (sampled about 20 visitors with skulls) looked at my table for 2 seconds and turned their heads and kept walking past. This wasn't frustrating, because I got enough really lovely reactions on my work, but proves again that a lot of fashion is just empty meaningless cr*p. Why are we wasting time and money to look like a fashion advert?
On that note ignore all the 'keep spending for the economy' cr*p! Only buy what will stay for a long time, also in the heart. The real recovery is in the minds! Merry Christmas!

Sculptures by Dr. Freakinstyle, by freakinstyle on Feb 10, 2014 17:16:23 GMT 1, Finally managed to get another sculpture done! So frustrating, only on the art side of things off course, if you have been unemployed and lots of time to create and suddenly you don't! Plus side, finance is improving, but all these ideas are queuing up. Anyway, here is another one where I mixed bike parts with bones and is called: 'Big Foot'
No background story/meaning.

Sculptures by Dr. Freakinstyle, by freakinstyle on Apr 9, 2014 7:50:33 GMT 1, Finally got around making a new sculpture and decided to show the inside of a skull, because most people don't know what beauty is inside, added a hinge to create a Diptych:
Opened up
Corner view of skull
Hopefully I can start on some of my new ideas, seems to be getting more likely as contract for work runs out!

Sculptures by Dr. Freakinstyle, by freakinstyle on Apr 16, 2014 20:25:21 GMT 1, Thanks for all the likes and comments! Good to hear the 'hot rod' skull is clear enough, always difficult to judge because as an artist you clearly know, but don't know how it will reflect on the viewer.
Have another skull idea, and have loads of skulls, now to find some time!
