WTF are the Tories doing now?, by Coach on Mar 24, 2013 0:19:54 GMT 1, This latest fiasco has really pissed me off. Assistance with pre-school child care costs. Sounds a good idea. And if it was for people who needed it, I would agree. I would think it was a great idea. Low/middle income families - yeah great, go for it. But the Tories proposal is that each parent can earn up to £150,000 EACH and still qualify. What!?! So a couple can claim tax relief on child care costs, even if between them they earn £300,000 a year. How can that possibly be right? The rest of us, earning a fraction of that, pay for their benefit through our taxes. This has really made my blood boil. Proof that the Tories really are there just to help out the rich again. I would prefer that the benefit was twice or triple the amount for people who need it, rather than paying those earning 6 figure salaries a benefit they DO NOT NEED. Bring on the election.....

WTF are the Tories doing now?, by .dappy on Mar 24, 2013 0:38:12 GMT 1, Its OK though as it not not coming in for another another 2 1/2 years .... good headlines now 'helping the family'
There are National Insurance hikes that were announced a couple of budgets ago which will mean that we will all be paying more from April, but its gone under the radar as its old news.
Every Company big and small will also have to declare every time for every employee the NI amount they have paid for them and not just each quarter or year adding even more burdensome bureaucracy to the business'.
We're all in this together .....

WTF are the Tories doing now?, by Deleted on Mar 24, 2013 2:25:43 GMT 1, The Budget this week was laughable , not least because of the cuts to be implemented after the next election... How to choke any sort of recovery. As it stands we're looking at further downgrades, no reason to believe growth will be at predicted levels (which have been continually cut) and at least one more dip into recession.
And yet,no alternatives of value presented by Labour. They are so scared to state austerity neither makes economic or social sense, that we'll end up with half assed attempts at investment, rather than a bold vision forward.
It's unbelievable to me at least that the general public fell for the austerity line, a country's economy bares no relation to a household economy, yet ppl were willing to swallow the lie so readily.

WTF are the Tories doing now?, by Deleted on Mar 24, 2013 11:21:54 GMT 1, And don't forget putting the emphasis on the family to claim back the money absolves the state of its responsibility and creates another layer of beaurocracy. This method of claiming back tax relief is primarily geared up to the middle classes who know how to play the system, and have the time and understanding to benefit.
Regarding the current austerity, if someone gets themselves into heavy debt what you want them to do is go out and work to pay it off quicker, rather than remain unemployed and keep that debt. Surely the same argument applies to the state - not spending and investing in people and infrastructure prolongs this current economic malaise.

WTF are the Tories doing now?, by Deleted on Mar 24, 2013 11:29:28 GMT 1, Unfortunately that train of logic doesn't work on a state level, as current cuts are actually proving. Cuts will only work if you cut superfluous expenses, not wages and jobs. The moment you do that you cut income, expenditure and possibilities of growth. That will also pre suppose government expenditure was actually the issue too...

WTF are the Tories doing now?, by Dr Plip on Mar 24, 2013 11:55:43 GMT 1, This government is wasting vast amounts of money on ill-thought out schemes and policies. It's extremely difficult for spending cuts to make any positive difference to the economy in the long term.
Lack of bank lending is a real problem. If the governments are going to continue to give money to the banks, then they need to be forced to lend, not encouraged to.
If there aren't enough jobs, then help the jobless to create jobs by investing in self-employment and small business creation.
But spending waste has to stop.

Does supply side policy do anything? Does boosting bank balance sheets create demand? Does it create jobs? Who does it in fact help? I would suggest the wrong parts of the economy are being helped.

Sure QE helps but only if supported by other keynsian measures. I think the problem at this point has little to do with lending or supply side but more to do with what keynes coined 'animal spirits'. The expectation of a recession can cause one, which i think the UK is in now (look at iceland and ireland who have been recovering just fine...or the US for that matter). People are so afraid of investment at all levels it's grinding the economy to a halt.

WTF are the Tories doing now?, by eschiff on Mar 24, 2013 12:19:08 GMT 1, absolutely i agree with that.
what's amazing is except for perhaps lithuania in the 90s, there's been no evidence of austerity ever working. It's incredible countries are still trying it.
