I have been thinking about your post for a while.
Not sure I agree.
There are without doubt some artists whose work is derivative of others - some more so than others.
But I would think they are very much in the minority.
A lot of the artists that I collect or admire very much have their own style.
I'm thinking of painters like Brett Amory, Guy Denning, Best Ever (street and canvas I know), Know Hope (to name but a few).
And street artists like Sweet Toof (and others of or formally of BC), Swoon, Invader, Jeff Aerosol (again, to name but a few)
Even stencil artists (where one might think the medium makes it harder to be individual) often have their own style - take Agent Provocatuer, Jeff Aerosol, Blek, SPQR etc for example - all very individual styles imo.
So, not meaning to rush to the defense of the "scene", imo the "rip off" assertion fits the minority, rather than the majority of artists discussed here.

It's a shame. I look around and see so much to be excited by.
So much new. I'm still a little like a kid in a sweet shop.
My interest grew as I moved away from buying prints - so much easier to get caught on band wagons - and moved towards originals. Then you really do know that you can't have everything!
I like the interaction you have with the artists when buying originals, much more intimate.
I have something in the early pipeline now, which if it comes together, will be so thrilling. There is a little of the thrill of the chase.
Would love to know what the holy grail is, that you refer to - or maybe after you get it.
