Out of curiosity, by kathrynbigelow on Apr 11, 2013 0:54:30 GMT 1, I had dinner with an acquaintance recently, and everything stopped as soon as I walked in the door. He had a Banksy hanging on his wall.
He told me that when Banksy came to the Sundance Film Festival, he found a Banksy on a shed the night before the festival started. He came back later that night, defaced the shed, and took the supposed Banksy home, where it now hangs. Banksy fever spread over Utah the next week, but no one would know of this missing Banksy. (I live in Utah).
My question is, what do I do here? I feel bad for the person who owned the shed because they would be out a lot of money. However, Banksy did not claim that piece, so it might not be worth anything. Do I say anything to the shed owner?
I want the world to know about this possible Banksy, because it's pretty great, but I don't want to betray my friend, who told me to keep it to myself.
How do I verify a Banksy anyways? Can you, knowledgeable people in this forum, help?
If I get valid responses, I will post the picture of the Banksy. Thank you for your help!

Out of curiosity, by chaserawr on Apr 11, 2013 0:57:43 GMT 1, Banksy doesnt authenticate street pieces or pieces made at festivals, carnivals, garage sales, etc, etc.
Its not worth anything, and more than likely never wiill.
Post a pic so we can all enjoy it, instead of it being trapped at your mates house.
P.S. Point Break was an awesome movie. Cheers!

Out of curiosity, by djcuthbertson on Apr 11, 2013 4:36:34 GMT 1, I'm just happy to see someone else from Utah post on this forum. I know of someone here in Utah that has a "Banksy" and the story I heard was similar, although I was later informed it was fake. It would be interesting to see a photo to know if it is the same piece. Was this shed in Park City or Salt Lake?

Out of curiosity, by Deleted on Apr 11, 2013 9:51:32 GMT 1, I also had dinner with an acquaintance recently and like you everything stopped when I walked in the door - both his wife and mine were wearing the same dress! Imagine how we all felt.
Fortunately we all managed to see the funny side.

Out of curiosity, by Trevorm on Apr 11, 2013 11:08:32 GMT 1, Funny old place, America.
There you are minding your business when all of a sudden and, presumably, unannounced Banksy descends on your back yard, boshes a stencil up and disappears.... Only for somebody else to appear - at a later date - and again I'm guessing on what we call the 'QT' (not sure what this actually means) and chainsaws one side of the shed off.

Out of curiosity, by kathrynbigelow on Apr 12, 2013 3:36:29 GMT 1, You're absolutely right. I think if anything, you guys deserve to see it rather than my acquaintance friend keeping it at his house all to himself.
The image is attached. If you compare it to the Banksy's that were in Salt Lake at the same time, there is one that looks like a matching stencil. Again, I'm not an expert. Whether it's real or not, who knows.
Either way, enjoy!

Thought it best to get this out of the way before someone on here gets all excited, and "your acquaintance" decides that he might be interested in selling at "the right price".
If you look up an image of Banksy's praying boy, it will quickly become obvious that the two stencils have very little in common. See for instance all the additional lines in the clothing and the lack of detail in the face in the work you are presenting.
Judging by the horns and the overall blurry quality of the stencil, if this isn't homemade, I'd say it is more likely by Rene Gagnon.

Out of curiosity, by djcuthbertson on Apr 12, 2013 7:07:08 GMT 1, Not the same piece I was speaking of but still not a real banksy. It looks like gagnon as pelle said in his post. Definately Not the same stencil from the banksy pieces around town although similar.

Out of curiosity, by kathrynbigelow on Apr 12, 2013 7:50:40 GMT 1, Thank you so much Pelle! I had no idea who Rene Gagnon was before your post.
I found a link with the THE SHED, THE IMAGE, and on top of it all IT IS CLAIMED BY GAGNON: renegagnonfineart.com/street/135_street.html
As I have researched this further, it is interesting to see the relationship/competition between Banksy and Gagnon. A lot of the art by Gagnon in Utah was put in the media as Banksy's, even though Banksy did not claim them. There's a definitely possibility that Gagnon was here at the same time Banksy was during Sundance, maybe even following each others' work. Whether that was per-meditated or not I have no idea.
With this definite proof, do you guys have any idea how much Gagnon's street art is worth? My acquaintance is not planning to sell it as far as I know (heck, he still thinks it's acBanksy), it would just be interesting to know more information. What would you guys do, keep it a secret? Contact Gagnon?
A million thanks for everyone's quick replies. I have gone from 0 to 60 as far as learning about street artists. Many thanks!
