Situational factor #1: My wife is often the harshest critic of the art that I buy, want to buy, etc.. She puts up with my art interests, but outside of a few artists that she's met and seen their work in person (Herakut, Chloe Early, BOXI, etc.), she's really not crazy about most of what I buy.
Situational factor #2: We have two small children and my wife works in public education with disadvantaged kids that deal with violence/guns as a daily reality.
Situational factor #3: I agreed that I would not buy any art containing images of guns.
Situational factor #4: I strayed from my commitment and bought a Takamatsu piece last year that depicts a young girl lovingly "cuddling" with a machine gun entitled "Something To Believe In".
Wife's Reaction (upon opening the container): "Seriously, you went with the one with the gun? Haven't weโฆwhoa, that is simply incredible. I've never seen a piece of art that looks like that. It's wellโฆit's simply a different species of art."
The piece has been hanging in our dining room ever since. You simply need to see Takamatsu's work in person to fully appreciate the impact. There is a reason that his last three shows have sold out prior to opening the doors. Hope to see some forumites at the opening.

I'm no expert on Takamatsu's process, but I don't believe there are stencils involved here (at least not in the traditional sense). This is the best explanation I've seen (and it's not that great) about what depth mapping is and how Takamatsu uses gouache to paint the pieces by hand.
Takamatsu's Depth Mapping
In looking closely at the "lines" around the differently shaded areas on my piece, they certainly look to be painted by hand. BAA, if you have further visibility into the process and I'm missing something, please let me knowโฆI'd be interested.

Just read it, then re- read it, then skimmed it again! And if my slow brain has got it right, the images are mapped digitally but then accurately hand painted with guache!?
I could well have that wrong tho... but stencils weren't mention so I can stand down.

It's difficult to reproduce the effect of his beautiful holographic images in a JPG...kinda like a fine art, monochromatic hologram (not to be confused w/lenticular) of Japanese Anime. If you are in SoCal in the next few weeks, check it out in person.
