Can framing a canvas devalue it????, by Deleted on May 15, 2013 1:37:39 GMT 1, Hi,
Just something that I've been thinking about. I've currently got my Whatson canvas in to be framed up as we speak. I trust my MFM 100% as I've used him for ages now. He's using small screws to attach the tray frame into the canvas wooden frame from the rear in the corners. Obviously at no point will the screws actually touch the canvas as they'll only go in the wood but I was wondering if the canvas could be seen now as being 'damaged' or 'altered' and would this affect the value of it?

Can framing a canvas devalue it????, by Harveyn on May 15, 2013 11:10:22 GMT 1, NB... not good... you should never use screws / this should be done by attaching to a sub frame. that slots into place with no screws / or staples... I have a canvas that has been framed with a sub frame. I am the most anal person in the world when it comes to protecting art but even I think this is over kill. What possible issue can their be on the value or integrity of the artwork if someone screws into the wooden stretcher.
How is the canvas attached to the stretcher?
What about traditional frames that actually touch the sides and sometimes front of canvases that you see in every major museum in the world?
Plus most tray frames do not have solid backs (canvas exposed) so you cannot use a sub frame.
Just my opinion of course.

Can framing a canvas devalue it????, by Deleted on May 15, 2013 12:50:36 GMT 1, Ok thanks folks. I'm happy to let MFM screw into the frame so I'm prepared to let him go ahead with that option.

Good luck. Would be great with a photo once its done. I have a canvas I'm thinking of doing something like this with.
