Digital SLR camars, by Lesson1 on May 16, 2013 17:34:03 GMT 1, I would whole heatedly recommend a bridge camera such as the one we have. Nikon coolpix p510. It is in between a digital and slr. It has 42x optical zoom and other slr type toys but you don't need to change the lens. It's also great value for money. Have a look on review sites.

Digital SLR camars, by misnomer on May 16, 2013 19:50:24 GMT 1, if you're set on an SLR... (and it might also be worth some research on the micro 4/3rd systems - same benefit of interchangeable lenses, but smaller bodies as no mirror) you'll probably find most users come down into two camps Nikon or Canon (and a bit like Mac v Windows, many of the fans can be pretty vocal for their platform and critical of the others). My advice, go and get an actual hands-on feel for at least these two systems in a store. See which feels better in the hand, which for you has the most logical layout of controls. Also potentially what any friends or colleagues use, who you might be able to borrow lenses from?
Beyond that and perhaps most importantly, don't blow all your cash on just a body and the kit lens that optionally comes with it. Plan to invest in "good glass". Aim to get a couple of good 'primes' or fixed focal length lenses (the 50mm from most platforms are excellent value) they are optically much superior to most zooms. Which is not to say don't use zoom lenses, they can be a very practical 'walk around' lens. As to which lenses you start aquiring first (wide or long for example) that really depends on what kind of subject matter appeals to you (landscape/streetscape, portraits, macro, sports, wildlife etc). One you've adopted say Nikon or Canon, you'll find you update the bodies over the years but the lenses come along with you. Be careful, new camera gear can be as addictive as buying Art.

Digital SLR camars, by muti on May 16, 2013 20:01:56 GMT 1, Those big chunky SLR's drove me up the wall, far too many buttons and functions. I sold a lot of my art a few years ago and bought a Leica M9 and that changed my photography in such a good way. The price is very expensive though. I recently bought a Fuji Finepix X100 as my thrash around camera and am very happy with it, it looks great as well. Check out the reviews.
