I would look at getting a couple of sheets of acid free foam to go either side of the MDF just to add a bit of extra protection as the nasties in the mdf might leach out and I donโt think the paper will provide enough protection. It shouldnโt set you back much money but will be much safer in the long run

Inexpensive way to store larger A0 prints , by dullahmo on May 21, 2022 9:02:12 GMT 1, This is an idea someone on this forumn gave me a few weeks ago on a storage of large prints post. Thank you for the idea! I can`t exactly remember the user tag or find the exact thread.
It`s still a work in progress, I need to add some foam board on the inside surfaces and sew together a "wallet" to keep this large portfolio in. But we`re getting there! It opens and closes in full and smoothly. Main drawback is how heavy it is to carry but it will also help flatten artwork.
I went for 12mm thick MDF board from B&Q. This was ยฃ32 and I had it cut into 100*100cm. I bought a hinge (ยฃ6) not expecting it to be able to hold the weight but it`s actually doing fine so far!
It`s for my art works which are 24*36" and 32*32" which don`t quite fit into my A1 portfolio.

Inexpensive way to store larger A0 prints , by John The Badgers on May 21, 2022 18:58:49 GMT 1, Great work that dullahmo.
Coincidence, as I have done the same, I think it was Morfx with the idea?
I too used 12mm board from B&Q, and works a treat.
May I suggest, I used some large sheets of white card that B&M sell to line the board, then bought a pack of glassine paper to separate, and works a treat.
I put a couple of posters in there a few weeks ago, only looked last night, and they are now as flat as a pint at my local during 'Happy' Hour.

Inexpensive way to store larger A0 prints , by Morfx on May 21, 2022 19:07:46 GMT 1, I believe that was taken from my idea that I leave under my sofa..
Only problem you will find, as it's fixed hinged, the more you put in it will not close properly.. it will end up wedge shaped..
I taped one side as this could be easily removed.
Looking good though.. ๐๐

I agree about it becoming wedge shaped due to the hinge. One way to minimise that is to add the hinge after adding the inner boards. Either way it could lead to the top board not being even.
I would also be careful with blind stamps, especially if the blind stamp end of the print is at the hinge end of the folder. That can be minimised by cutting a hole in the inner board where the blind stamp is.

Inexpensive way to store larger A0 prints , by Terry Fuckwitt on May 21, 2022 19:54:50 GMT 1, I made one years ago from ply that's still going strong. I drilled six holes and used these snap keyrings that work as a hinge and prevent it becoming a wedge. As John The Badgers said line it with card( I used A0 mount board glued to the inside) as MDF is full of nasties.

Funnily enough this was going to be my original choice! Might have been easier thinking about it.

That may be better than foam board / mount board as that might make the hinge stick out too much.

It's 5mm, I wouldn't go less than that as it has a tendency to warp

Inexpensive way to store larger A0 prints , by woobl on May 22, 2022 13:50:16 GMT 1, Very smart idea. I popped this in another thread, but thereโs a Alibaba seller who does A0 ring bound portfolios:
www.alibaba.com/product-detail/A0-loose-leaf-Poster-Collection-Binder_1600075834564.html
I reached out to check what the minimum order wasโฆ 10,000 pieces! I fear thereโs not enough UAA members in need of such a large portfolio to justify getting that manyโฆ!
In the meantime will definitely try your idea!

Apologies dullahmo,
I don't have a link as I went into B&M. There was a large rack of card/paper etc, I would imagine most stores have them?
As Mr Fuckwitt quite rightly points out, the board has some nasties in, so you need to but a barrier in, and I found this card works really well. Its less than ยฃ3 a sheet, I think I used 3 of them -
As to the hinge debate, I actually used Gorilla tape, you can then remove easily, add items and re-seal. You can also add to the opposite side to really keep everything flat.

I wanted to ask what you would recommend as the maximum number of prints?
I have approximately 15 in right now and I could definitely squeeze in more but I don`t want to risk it with such expensive large prints.
The prints I have in there are 32*32inch and 24*36inches.
Thank you so much!
