Buying Criteria, by DameHoracia on Jun 13, 2013 7:27:55 GMT 1, I just wondered, being new here, how you set your buying criteria on line, here in the forum and elsewhere? If someone on the forum is selling, how do you gage if the price is a fair one or do you just base it on how much you want that print or if it could be collectable and do you haggle?
I buy pieces because I really want them. I'm no expert but I have been collecting ever since I received my first grant at college many years ago. I base it on what I love and what I want to look at in my home. If it has some future value then that's a bonus.
But I just don't know (other than the obvious - edition, COA etc) what to ask for online or from ebay when a piece is offered or comes up. How do you choose who to purchase from and at what amount?
I hope this is the right place to start this thread.

Buying Criteria, by kultur on Jun 13, 2013 8:36:17 GMT 1, If you are buying prints, www.Expressobeans is a good gauge for pieces sold, but not a definite answer. Search around and ask questions and try and sort through the bullsh*t. People on here are never scared to tell you what they think something is worth... in reality ... or just in their minds.

Buying Criteria, by DameHoracia on Jun 13, 2013 8:51:32 GMT 1, Thanks for that. If I like something then that's all well and good, I just don't want to pay over the odds. But I guess it's how bad you want something. I think I am just a bit more cautious with online buying, but seems to be loads on here that do it successfully, that's why I posted.
I also think that lots of places/artists use the word 'print' when they mean ink jet with sig. I don't collect giclees, signed or not. But it seems to be an ever growing trend and few seem to mind, not sure what I've missed on that one!

Buying Criteria, by Deleted on Jun 13, 2013 9:29:38 GMT 1, I just choose to believe all the hype and promotion i hear then shell out accordingly, this leaves me with the constant dilemma of which bed to put all the artworks underneath,i find it passes the hours in my lonely life with its long long days.

Buying Criteria, by Trevorm on Jun 13, 2013 13:01:00 GMT 1, Yeah! and don't forget the sleepless nights.
It's all sub, or the other one ob, jective - takes me ages to work it out which one I think I mean.
Anyway, there are no 'rules' - it has taken me years to realise that although you set out to only buy what you really like at what you consider to be a viable price .... it all goes belly up after you've bought the piece and looked at what you've done in the cold hard light of day! There is a consideration I make these days and it kind of centres on asking myself if i'm buying something to stop somebody else having it?!
Seriously - buy what you like with a view to displaying it

Buying Criteria, by DameHoracia on Jun 13, 2013 13:10:11 GMT 1, Thanks Trevorm. I do buy what I like, but as small as the criteria is I work from, I've made some bad mistakes in past by purchasing in the past as a young buyer, getting it really wrong in person having viewed the art. There's always someone who is happy to rip you off, lets face it. I see lots on offer on these forums and have started to ask about work offered up - get the feeling I may ask too many questions though, which you'd think would be ok seeing as it's online - obviously not. *EDIT* made first purchase on ebay from a very nice guy. Now waiting for print to arrive.
But what ho, thought I'd ask, never hurts in my opinion. Ta for the responses.
