banksy prints pasted down onto backing, by Deleted on Jun 26, 2013 23:18:49 GMT 1, In my travels to the uk in the late nineties I worked at a framing studio. My first day when I asked where the hinging tape was I was told..... " hinging tape.... No we mount everything down.," And not just mounted down..... Dry mounted onto Masonite. I was horrified. I had only ever used hinging tape in New Zealand for the ten years before that. But that was the studios policy and I just had to what they did.
I mounted down originals and ltd ed prints......everything.... And I flinched every time. Just thinking what I was doing was not reversible
So it does happen.....unfortunately.
Professional mounting doesn't mean it can be reversed.... It just means its been done by a professional.

banksy prints pasted down onto backing, by Deleted on Jun 26, 2013 23:25:02 GMT 1, In saying that..... Some mounting has no long term affect to the print and is completely acid free. We send off photos to be "professionally" mounted onto gator or foam board or perspex or stainless steel but I was always under the opinion that it was permanent.
Will contact a conservator today and the guys that do my mounting and will ask all the questions asked in this topic.

banksy prints pasted down onto backing, by Deleted on Jun 27, 2013 4:55:06 GMT 1, Hi all...
Just spoke to my restorer who informed me that dry mounting is not really removable. she said if you catch it within the first year then it sometimes can be reversed but after a year the fibres of the papers "cross link" and it becomes near impossible to remove. Photos are easier than paper to remove but the kind of paper banksy uses is not really able to be removed.
if they have been stuck using spray adhesive then they can be removed but its costly. And there is the. Chance the paper will get damaged. If the glue goes into what's called a 3rd phase which is where it becomes brittle then it's easier to reverse. Also depends on what quality of glue has been used. If its been done professionally then there less chance of it being able to be reversed. Makes sense right..... As a framer if I want something stuck fast I'm going to make sure it's not going to fall off later on.
Also you have to take into account that if there is any glue residue stuck to the paper then that may affect it later on by discolouring the paper with acids from the glue. If the paper can be treated and de-acidified then that's great but it really comes down to if the image can handle the extreme cleaning process that's required. I was informed that Some inks don't like the cleaning process used to remove the left over glue.
If it been stuck with an acid free dry mount then I'd leave it as it is.....
she said the easy option is to run the other way..... Don't touch them.
Hope this info helps....
If anyone has anything else to add please do as I'm only supplying the information from my restorer this morning.
Cheers Kerry Koru studio Sydney

banksy prints pasted down onto backing, by Trevorm on Jun 27, 2013 9:39:20 GMT 1, ^ Good stuff, Kezz
There was a board mounted Rude Copper on eBay fairly recently - listed a few times with a descending value each time. It had COA - but PC had noted that it wasn't in the condition that it had been sold in. I think that it ended up with the bin price reduced, over the period it was up, by about £4k. Not sure that it sold in the end. It put me off.
Damned if you do and ditto if you don't: Do you buy something that has been tampered with/enhanced/or whatever by somebody else, however professional the alteration is described? I guess 80% + wouldn't.
I was given a Melvin Petterson etching from the 80's (in the 80's) and applied a 'safe' adhesive when I noticed, about 20 years ago that it had moved slightly in the frame - I've recently had to move a lot of my stuff from store and the four applications are quite clearly defined, unfortunately, where the adhesive has somehow leached into the corners of the 'print'.

banksy prints pasted down onto backing, by unsold on Jun 28, 2013 11:48:33 GMT 1, Just heard back from the chap.
They are removing the backing but the person who did the backing is going on Holiday in a few weeks so I will have to wait until he gets back.
Thanks for all your advice - just going to sit on a full decision until they are removed. I recon I have offered a fair price so will want to check out the condition before handing over the wonga!

banksy prints pasted down onto backing, by Trevorm on Jun 28, 2013 13:23:10 GMT 1, Yeah! - only a few weeks, haha!
If (big if) contact is re established don't go by pictures of the backs of the prints - you'd need to have a proper viewing. I suppose it's going to be down to price anyway.
Good luck

Even at a £70 print being treated this way, £70 back then was a lot of money!!!!!
