banksy prints pasted down onto backing, by unsold on Jun 26, 2013 8:30:02 GMT 1, Morning all
New to the forum - could you offer me some advice?
I have been offered 2 banksy prints with COAs but they are pasted down onto backing.
He says that they can be reversed without any harm to the print - he says the were done professionally by a paper conservationist. Should i get him to remove them from the backing before i investigate further?
Is there a particular reason why a print that has been put on backing is bad?
Thanks

banksy prints pasted down onto backing, by unsold on Jun 26, 2013 8:38:31 GMT 1, thanks for your advice Wizzy
Is it just so you can see the back?
The prints look fine from the front - i dont fully understand why having them on backing effects their value.
Could you explain please (the 2 prints are a GWRB and LIITA if that makes any difference)
thanks for your advice Wizzy

Also whether it looks ok from the front is irrelevant if the back is nackered,i myself look ok from a distance but rubbish close up. Walk away.
ps. Its not a wind up this is it matey?, i see the prints you mention are prob the most desired on here at the moment,he hasnt got a CWSB nailed to his bathroom wall as well has he?.

banksy prints pasted down onto backing, by Manty on Jun 26, 2013 8:48:59 GMT 1, I think a few framers used to 'glue' prints to a backboard to make them look nice and flat when framed.
It makes quite a bit of difference to the sale price if it is on back board, not really sure why. its one of these 'it just is' type things.
If i had to guess i would say people like things that are reversible, i.e you can take it out of a frame and it wont be discoloured, then roll it up and put it in a tube, or portfolio.
As an aside if there was a framed print at an auction house and once bought was found to be dry mounted, would you have any come back, or as the OPs question.
There are a few specialist print restorers like graham Bignell, might be worth giving them a call, as the prints you mentioned are worth a good few ยฃ0000s
hey, good luck!

banksy prints pasted down onto backing, by Dr Plip on Jun 26, 2013 8:49:38 GMT 1, There are reproduction prints out there. Handily with a repro stamp on the back of the print. Just something to think about.
I agree with Wizzy. If they person says they can be removed without damaging the print, let them do it first.

banksy prints pasted down onto backing, by Deleted on Jun 26, 2013 10:08:00 GMT 1, OK, dont shoot me down here fella but i have to ask this, are you really the seller and have come on here for some idea of what these might be worth or are you really a potential buyer?, just asking.
I would still get the seller to remove them from the backing before you make up your mind.

banksy prints pasted down onto backing, by Deleted on Jun 26, 2013 10:12:30 GMT 1, If they're genuine the choice to purchase them is yours, but as plip pointed out, there are reproduction prints out there. Check their authenticity with Pest Control and send them photos of these to check their images marry. They don't offer COA's without seeing the work.
The question is also how well do you know the seller? If a total stranger came up to you in a pub and offered to sell you these would you do so?

banksy prints pasted down onto backing, by Happy Shopper on Jun 26, 2013 10:34:03 GMT 1, I don't really see the issue with them pasted to backing... not that I'd do it to mine, but I can see why it might be done. In fact film posters are often stuck to backing to protect them, so there may actually be a benefit !?
If they have COAs then you know they're the real thing. Frame them, and put them on the wall !!!

banksy prints pasted down onto backing, by Deleted on Jun 26, 2013 13:42:16 GMT 1, Film posters can get linen backed which is reversible. It's is to stabilise the poster to stop tearing etc. I would never stick down an original work on paper. It depends on how these prints were stuck down in the first place. If they have been floated and stuck onto a board then it most Likely spray adhesive . They are recent prints so most likely they have been stuck down with spray adhesive glue which is really not good for the print. They may not be able to be reversed if this has happened as the glue would have left all kinds on nasty chemicals in the paper. I wouldn't touch them to be honest but a conservator would be able to tell you exactly how they have been stuck down.....it's not going to come cheap.
Anyhoo that's my thoughts.

banksy prints pasted down onto backing, by dotdot on Jun 26, 2013 13:56:06 GMT 1, afternoon all.
prints pasted / attached to backing ? pretty standard practice if you want to frame something.
framing something which has not been done like this is positively frowned upon by a few framers i know. ...why ? well if you don't have them attached firmly and flat... well you may and will and therefore do find that the rippling effect will appear at some point down the line... that line might be short if you don't frame much but if you're a framer it means ... returning customers but hey that may not the job of a framer... just ask your average framer.. whilst yeah they'd be keen, they'd know if they did without proper materials.. they'd be in the merde if someone came back asking for a 'how did you do that' reversal.
most of what I have on the wall is done in this way...via a few people... in stages.
if it was done professionally it can be reversed - if it was not well.... perhaps it might be tricky. goes without saying prof = conservation materials.
from what I've seen it looks quite within reason what has been done. if the seller has had it done it' been done both for a reason and perhaps on recommendation. find out ...
no doubt both are worth a lot of money - best case and worst case perhaps a fair bit less to the breadth of the situation should be clear to both you the buyer and .. the seller.
quite interesting this one - at least they're not damaged like that smash up the other day.
as for their worth.. aha.
keep us posted.

banksy prints pasted down onto backing, by chichi carter on Jun 26, 2013 14:46:55 GMT 1, I have a large format print that has been drymounted 'by accident'. And 'by accident' I mean I have no clue how that flew by me considering all the negative posts I have read on here and elsewhere regarding drymounting. But the other day I was looking at the print and thought it was amazing how flat it was for a such a large print on hinges. Suddenly I had doubts... pulled out the framing invoice... drymounted. And the framer I'd taken it to is a pro. Pretty much every artist and gallery in Montreal deals with them. They frame artworks that are worth way more than what I bring in on a daily basis. I had a little freak out, by myself, talking out loud, by myself... I was planning on taking a couple of prints over to them in the following days. When I got there I (calmly) asked them all about it and what they told me is that it is reversible. It is a bit more work than simply cutting off hinges but it is reversible. It all comes down to how you want your print to look in that frame. Some people like their prints to be perfectly flat, some don't mind them being a bit wavy. At this point there's no use freaking out about it. What's done is done and I have no intention of selling my print. And if I ever decide to have it removed from the frame to sell it I'll bring it back to them so they can prove to me it really is reversible!

banksy prints pasted down onto backing, by unsold on Jun 26, 2013 14:50:41 GMT 1, He says it was done professionally and not that long ago - it can be reversed without any damage so time will tell. Will be interesting to see whats on the back!!
They have both been framed before and apparently the LIITA print did have some minor creasing and took advice that putting it down on board would help.
its going to take a couple of weeks to sort. although i do have the feeling I am not the only one he is speaking to.
Will update you all with further details.

Unless this was done before Banksy got big and was just 'another' artist then why on earth would anybody drymount a Banksy? Madness sheer madness !!

banksy prints pasted down onto backing, by Ruggs on Jun 26, 2013 16:22:27 GMT 1, Must have been done a little while ago because there is some discolouration to the outer edges of the GWRB print which indicates to me it also had a mount that slightly overlapped the print. Would never put a mount over Banksy's prints that were printed on the early recycled stock. Professionally done or not.
