Running/Training for a Marathon, by craigf on Jul 1, 2013 21:50:39 GMT 1, Hey all, Has anyone on here run one before? I'm gonna be running my first marathon in November and would love book recommendations/ training regiment recommendations as I prepare. If anyone has any suggestions, please forward them my way. Thanks! I did the London Marathon about a million years ago (2003) and found the following really helped:
1) I joined a club and made sure I went for a group run once a week. It helped to train with others, many who also ran the Marathon so we travelled there together
2) Runners World magazine - lots of tips re how to prepare including how to speed yourself up, interval training etc
3) Ran lots of shorter races as part of my routine, easy to find in Runner World and on line
I went from couch potato in May, to run a half marathon in November and then the marathon in April. The more training you can do the more you will enjoy the race itself, get some long runs in (I went up to 20 miles) and taper down a few weeks before the race itself

Running/Training for a Marathon, by mouser on Jul 1, 2013 21:55:11 GMT 1, Ran 2 last year, one planned for september this year, followed the Edinburgh marathon intermediate training plan as I had been runing for a couple years before, was comfy at 10-20km runs.
Its tough going to undertake the full commitment, but well worth it - main advice, do your first one for charity, that way all your family and friends sponsor you, peer pressure is crap if you let them down, its a good motivator through those weekly 30km slogs.
Remember nothing compares to actual time spent training / running no matter how you fancy it up. End of the day its you running for about 4 - 5 hours, several training runs up to the 3hr mark are essential as a minimum by the end of your training, with time on legs / stamina in place, the rest is will power. The comfier you are with time and distance, the more you will be able to enjoy the day.
I completed my first one in 3:56, swore I'd never do one again, 24hrs later the next one was booked
Good luck. (Pm me your email address and I"ll send over my current 16 week program for you if you want it)

Running/Training for a Marathon, by Feral Things on Jul 1, 2013 22:01:29 GMT 1, My advice would be to find a free training plan online and stick to it religiously. If you're going to run 26 miles you want to be sure that you've given yourself the best possible chance of doing your best on the day and that's all about preparation in the months before the race. My advice would be always warm up and stretch properly after a run otherwise your preparations will get messed up by injury at some point, download Runkeeper onto your smartphone, give up alcohol if you can bare it, make sure you include hilly as well as flat runs in your training schedule, experiment with energy gels etc. long before the big day and most importantly put plasters over your nipples for the actual race. Even if you ignore absolutely everything else I've written make sure you do the last one!
Good luck it's something you'll be proud of for the rest of your life.

Running/Training for a Marathon, by mmmike on Jul 2, 2013 22:25:44 GMT 1, I suspect you are more looking for a chance to talk about your times rather than looking for advice, because why ask on an art forum for running advice? But incase you do want some help here is my 2 cents;
If you are interesting in reading about running the best book I have found is the Lore of Running by Noakes. A great read. It covers everything but you have to want it, it is close to 1,000 pages. Daniels' Running Formula ( I haven't read it all) is good and the McMillan running calculator is also helpful www.mcmillanrunning.com/
My training advice would be train with people who are faster than you.

Hey mmmike. Thanks for the advice. Yah I'm trying to find some people to train with in my area in NYC. Figured that would be a good way to do it. Anything in Lore of Running you recommend skimming over or is it all worth it?
And I was definitely looking for advice and got a ton of great advice. One reason you gotta love this forum. People are knowledgable about a whole slew of things.

Running/Training for a Marathon, by mmmike on Jul 8, 2013 2:54:25 GMT 1, The Lore of running has all sorts of interesting topics. The central governor concept is very interesting and important also there is a lot of history of running stories that I quite enjoyed.
Good luck with your training.

Running/Training for a Marathon, by street4RT on Jul 8, 2013 21:16:02 GMT 1, Hi akbape,
Really good to hear you're going for your first marathon.
I would advise you to do daily squats (3 sets of 10)
I would also advise you to properly warm up before exercise and more importantly cool down and stretch so to avoid any injuries
Apart from that, they say a spaghetti bolognese (carbs) the evening before your run is meant to give you the slow energy release ... it does seem to work for me!!
Beetroot juice is used by athletes to and has been proven to give you 10-20 percent more stamina
Dont drink too much water whilst running - just make sure you drink little bits and keep hydrated ...
Dont eat anything heavy before your run, a banana is usually good as thats fast releases energy.
You can also buy gels that you could eat whilst running to keep feeding your body the energies it needs.
Don't take my word for all the above ... look into it yourself.
There's plenty more tips I can give but that's it for now :-) ...
Wish you all the best of luck!!

Running/Training for a Marathon, by mouser on Jul 8, 2013 21:23:55 GMT 1, As street4art says, gells are available, but try them out and work out which ones work best for you, never try new ones on the day ( no matter who is sponsoring the run, take your own as they can either have bad side effects or run out). I did the last 10 miles of one last year with seriously iffy innards after trying a new type of gell blok being given out on the day.... bad move. The Si ones are more fluid than most and sit easier with me, but bare in mind, gells dont tend to be much use unless you are going for distance, general advice on running forums is use gells for runs longer than 10km, taken every 5-10km to top up body reserves, any more and you'll just spend the afternoon sat on the loo.

Harsh really as my post was (unusually) genuine but I do see what you mean. Straight out of Roger Mellie's profanasaurous.
I don't run, my knees are fooked but I do ride bikes and no matter how much I give it some on a Saturday, I can ride on a Sunday with the benefit of decent recovery - I'm pretty sure that same can be said for any regime....

Yup, sorry Vera, couldnt resist, he's a durty bugger but it always made us chuckle as he was shameless. As for the protein shakes themselves, alot of mates swear by them for training, they do alot of kick boxing type things and swear by the restorative qualities, but not something I have dabbled with but for muscle restoration. Then again, several mates swear by a pint of chocolate milkshake after a hard run.

Running/Training for a Marathon, by letiss on Jul 24, 2013 14:44:32 GMT 1, I'm training for a half marathon with a view to a marathon in the next year or so. Pretty new to it too and it seems like popular gigs, you've got to book your races months in advance. Joined the local work running club, which has helped a fair bit. Found that just doing the distances and not always focusing on speed is a good start. Interesting to know how you're getting on Akbape
