BUYERS BEWARE of first time post sales, by Deleted on Jul 23, 2013 15:07:02 GMT 1, Yes it's happened again !! For the third time a newbie has posted a FS thread and I have bought only to buy a damaged print . Seller then says he has no responsibility anymore for the print as I bought and he lives on the other side of the world . He also has since quit the forum his username was jutt Mods surely you guys can stop this ? Surely someone needs to have a certain amount of cred to be able to sell otherwise this is fast becoming a forum of fakes and duds!! For every crook to sell their damaged goods with absolutely no legal cone back . There has been a raft of newbies joining this forum just to sell then pissing off again. And from what I'm seeing most of them are selling crap ! Discuss

BUYERS BEWARE of first time post sales, by street4RT on Jul 23, 2013 15:15:19 GMT 1, That bad, sorry to hear that!
Wasn't the item insured then??
Did he send you pictures of the item before it was sent?
Did it actually get damaged in transit?
Hope you get it sorted!

BUYERS BEWARE of first time post sales, by Warm Gun on Jul 23, 2013 15:24:43 GMT 1, If this is the third time it's happened to you then you really should be more careful, it's not something for the mods to police, it's just application of common sense.
Don't send paypal gift, don't send a payment into someone's account and always try to meet face to face if you can, it's not that hard.

BUYERS BEWARE of first time post sales, by Happy Shopper on Jul 23, 2013 15:25:50 GMT 1, I just wouldn't do that anyway without paying with Paypal, or through ebay even, or at least recieving the item first. If you did a bank transfer to someone with no history or reputation, you're a little too trusting IMO !

Whilst it may be unsettling for us, and upsetting for you, I really do not think that it is up to the Mods (or the administrator for that matter) to stop this. It is up to us to take our own precautions (buy from established members, take references, use paypal - not gift (unless trusted seller), inspect first if possible, arrange for someone else trusted to inspect if not etc) The level of precautions will of course very much depend on who is selling, and value. But bottom line is, it's up to us to be careful. Sorry to hear this has happened.

BUYERS BEWARE of first time post sales, by Baby Dave on Jul 23, 2013 15:31:36 GMT 1, Sorry to hear you've got stung again. What reasonable method could be imposed to prevent this in the future? I personally cant think of anything feasible. Even with good references and recommendations, it wont stop someone from selling crap and nabbing your cash off ya. Even eBay, with its rating system, isnt perfect. It all boils down to being extremely cautious when dealing with people you dont know. Ive only dealt with a handful of people on here and have been very lucky. When I part with a large amount of cash, or sell something, I usually do it in person. At least that way you can inspect the item. If i get a bad vibe from someone then i wont deal with them. Go with your gut.
I appreciate there are people from all over the world here so the above is not always possible. In any case it would be best to get photos of everything before committing. Opt for the best shipping method and make sure its insured to its full amount whilst in transit. I know we all want our holy grail piece for a bargain price, but we all need to be realistic. Its great to get a bargain, but if its too good to be true then it inevitably is. I'd never skimp on packaging and shipping if buying from abroad....its just not worth it!
Again, sorry to hear your story....

Regardless of their occupation, you should still look at fully protecting yourself in the future. Bank transfers, imo, are dangerous. At least with PayPal you have protection...provided its not a gift.
I guess you have to chalk this one down to a bad egg and just learn from this.
Dont be too trusting!

BUYERS BEWARE of first time post sales, by street4RT on Jul 23, 2013 15:39:25 GMT 1, @einstein - was his ID real or fake?
I guess you could always send the governing body for lawyers who issued him the licence he is using this in bad faith and scamming people.
Or threaten him with the above ... give him a chance before you actually go a head with it!!
That's what I would do right now - hurt him where it hurts him the most ... his job!

BUYERS BEWARE of first time post sales, by 11 on Jul 23, 2013 15:46:18 GMT 1, Two principles I always follow (unless I really trust the seller) :-
- Even if the buyer insists on Paypal Gift; I send the main payment as a standard transaction and then ask the seller to tell me the Paypal cost - send that bit as a Gift - if the buyer objects to that approach then get out straight away!!
- Never buy from a seller that isn't offering references - and only take references from those members you recognise as long-serving and upstanding - if the seller is a newbie then they will have to build some credibility before someone will back them.
If the seller pulls something like this then check EB, artchival etc - they may be lurking across all of them - we have the Good & Bad Dealings With threads so you should post there to warn others and then search the Social Network sites for your man - if you find them and publicly discuss what they have done to you they might actually be shamed into correcting things
1 last point; this is the internet - we can all be anything we want - tomorrow i'm taking off for a 24hr round-trip to Mars, the day after I will be a lawyer - if you don't know the seller personally then why the hell would you give them money with no safeguard to protect you

Lets hear the smart arses get out of this one ! To be fair chap and although not what you want to hear a lot of what is being said is true. You bought this way as I assume you thought cheaper than an auction or a gallery. To be fair you got the print your just complaining about his view of the condition versus your view. Not disputing your claim or point but it is a second hand print bought by post. I have heard a lot worse on here I can tell you. It not a fake or to be honest a great rip off as at least he did not just take your money and disappear. But it is a warning to people that 5 posts and a forsale sign should be a warning. Eg someone has just become a member to flog something. To be fair sounds like from your mails all the warning signs were there eg. No history, other side of the world, either the pics were not good or what're as you could not see the damage etc straight bank transfer but you chose to ignore this and took a chance so there was a fair chance you were going to be disappointed eg you wanted a completely honest seller with the same view on creases mmmmmm been many a row on here about this before. Sorry it has not worked out but.......... Lesson learned hopefully but do not blame the forum or the mods you might want to look a little closer to home

Not having a go at you and glad you posted and hope it acts as a warning to people especially if it was a Banksy as you imply as it will not have been a small amount to part with.

BUYERS BEWARE of first time post sales, by Deleted on Jul 23, 2013 16:09:45 GMT 1, Not sure what the mods could do about this, it's all about using some judgement.
I personally wouldn't buy from anyone who's brand new on the forum just as I wouldn't buy from anyone on EBay with no feedback.
I wouldn't look at someone's profession and make conclusions about their honesty from that either as there's good and bad in every profession.
I hope you manage to get something sorted. Obviously I wouldn't condone any sort of 'confrontation' but why not post which city he lives in and if someone wants to PM you who lives near him they could go and speak to him and try and sort something out. Lets face it, that would be the last thing he expects.

BUYERS BEWARE of first time post sales, by kendo on Jul 23, 2013 16:10:23 GMT 1, Its always gutting to read these types of threads. Years ago I was a member on a computing forum and they had a system where you had to have at least 250 posts before you where able to see the for sale section! It was very actively moderated and your posts where checked in case you where just spamming to get your number up! Maybe something like this can be considered!

BUYERS BEWARE of first time post sales, by kel on Jul 23, 2013 16:14:07 GMT 1, Nothing I can say is going to ease the disappointment for you Einstein. I have had several good trades on here as I am sure you have in the past. In business as in life I have always had a monetary figure where I am happy to take a calculated risk. When anything moves outside that value then you really should have looked at other options to complete this deal. The plus side is that you have at least got the print you wanted. Okay not in perfect condition but it could have been a whole lot worse.
When you look back at this you will realise that you are actually more annoyed with yourself for letting this happen than this forum.

BUYERS BEWARE of first time post sales, by dotdot on Jul 23, 2013 16:15:21 GMT 1, sorry to hear of your tale E.
this place.... it's not ideal place to take risks.
with money - once it's in your pocket it's ok. once it leaves you're in the hands of risk.
this person took a risk.. joined and took advantage. 1/ they were far away 2/ they kept their hand close to their chest 3/ they did a few other things... obscuring info not letting on what they already knew etc.
you took a risk and stumped up.
we all know one thing - if it's not happened to you... it could happen quite easily. ..and you'll be caught out eventually (no ifs and no buts here..)
the only way to avoid ... the situation of risk is to minimise .. 1/ new user 2/ no refs. 3/ etc ..
how many of us have seen a liita or a laugh now flying by from someone with ZERO posts...
and thought .. it looks good.
cmon sing along... (or cry into your pint..) ..if its... too good to be true... IT roughly means just that.
anyone who thinks otherwise.. is BACK in RISK CITY.
it's a nightmare.. but is avoidable ... move along, pass tell em to FO.. whatever. ....in the meantime take the hit have it repaired and ... perhaps put it on the wall.. bad taste.. but at least it WASN'T A FAKE.
stay cool.
sorry to hear of your tale E.

the only way to avoid ... the situation of risk is to minimise .. 1/ new user 2/ no refs. 3/ etc ..
how many of us have seen a liita or a laugh now flying by from someone with ZERO posts...
and thought .. it looks good.
cmon sing along... (or cry into your pint..) ..if its... too good to be true... IT roughly means just that.
anyone who thinks otherwise.. is BACK in RISK CITY.
it's a nightmare.. but is avoidable ... move along, pass tell em to FO.. whatever. ....in the meantime take the hit have it repaired and ... perhaps put it on the wall.. bad taste.. but at least it WASN'T A FAKE.
stay cool.

BUYERS BEWARE of first time post sales, by Art Fan 2011 on Jul 23, 2013 16:21:53 GMT 1, Thankfully most of the members here are genuine, honest people who share a love of all things art, but sadly every now and again people crop up and take advantage of the forum. Tust no one, get references, and pay via paypal, and have print insured by the seller. Lets hope we dont hear many more of these stories !!

BUYERS BEWARE of first time post sales, by Deleted on Jul 23, 2013 16:24:03 GMT 1, to be honest this place is a bit of a joke now... new members coming on selling crap.. stitching up people.. and old members that had there accounts removed cant get back on.......applying to only have there accounts rejected... JOKE! How did old members have their accounts removed? Why are they being rejected? I'm not disputing your claim but putting something like that out there should come with more info. (By the way our avatars look like they're making music together).
