Help Required - Print Damage, by Graham H on Jul 30, 2013 12:29:37 GMT 1, Hi All
Opened up a print over the weekend and found a circular kink in the border.. its about thumb nail sized, that i'm absolutely gutted about it to be honest.. Its pending sale to a forum member who I have informed as soon as I found the issue. He is wanting to float mount so will be visible.
Anyone have any hints / tips on removing it as best as possible. I appreciate there are picture restorers but is there anything I can do before I go down that route?..
Weights directly on it or maybe steaming it?.. I really dont want to make it any worse!
Cheers in advance
G

If you have a sale pending and have already agreed a price, I would offer a partial refund for the damage.

Help Required - Print Damage, by Trevorm on Jul 30, 2013 13:35:00 GMT 1, It should 'iron' out OK. I've had success with creases and edge damage like this by using a fine atomiser; de ionised water; good quality brown paper and an iron.
Get some practice in Graham, you'll be fine.

Help Required - Print Damage, by 11 on Jul 30, 2013 13:39:19 GMT 1, Ive had the same issue - a small OG turned up with a big crease and, under instruction from the artist did the following :-
Flat brown paper - 2 sheets, 1 iron - medium heat ( NO STEAM )
Place the brown paper either side of the print - make sure the brown paper is flat and doesn't have ridges in it or you'll end up with something resembling a McCoys Crisp
Use the iron on a medium heat and apply some light pressure over the damaged area - avoid the actual print if you can and just iron the border. Don't leave the iron in one spot for too long and lift the brown paper and inspect the crease before going for it again - just to make sure the paper isn't sticking or the print getting too hot
I did this 3-4 times and then after that leave the print sandwiched between 2 flat boards for a couple of days. Once removed, the crease will be almost invisible - place in a portfolio or somewhere where it can be left to rest for a couple more days and the crease will have disappeared
As I say - I have actually done this - I was very wary of making the iron too hot or putting too much pressure - my piece was small enough to be flattened between the pages of a book. When I removed it, even though the crease could still be seen if you looked hard enough for it, I was happy enough with the result - when i then went back to the piece about 4 days later I couldn't see the crease at all !!
I would always recommend using a restorer if the piece is expensive or the crease infringes on the actual image but basic restoration isnt as difficult as you might think......still f'kin scary, just not hard to do

Help Required - Print Damage, by Graham H on Jul 30, 2013 13:41:12 GMT 1, Thanks all..
Print was to be float mounted, and, would hopefully look to get it as perfect as possible for the person who I had agreed the price with on the understanding it was perfect. It is flat and has been out of the tube for approx 6 months since I got it.. but I just didnt spot it at the time.
I am in London on Thursday and popping it in to Graham Bignell to see if he can sort it / give advice.. so fingers crossed!!
Ill let you know how it goes
Thanks for the help guys

Help Required - Print Damage, by Deleted on Jul 30, 2013 14:57:52 GMT 1, I'd try to ironing method as detailed above.
Start on a low heat to check it but it should be fine.
