Ai Weiwei in Singapore (SHOWCARD GIVEAWAY!), by highly framable on Aug 15, 2013 9:29:56 GMT 1, His first in the land of pristine monotony.
Come check it out if you're in the neighborhood.
Some C-prints for sale apparently... not sure.
zhao is extremely excited, for the usual obvious reasons... and one very special reason..
will post pics and possibly do what we can to help overseas forum members out with freebies/questions whatnot if there's any!
stay tune!

Ai Weiwei in Singapore (SHOWCARD GIVEAWAY!), by highly framable on Aug 23, 2013 16:10:57 GMT 1, thanks anbesivam1! yes, those zhao's pics are all the pics we have for now! picked up some show cards, not many. the crowd is just too mad.
we'll go back when it's less nuts.
those who are keen, price starts from S$35k for one 80cmx80cm c-print (edition of 2 or 4). not too bad considering he'll still be in the history books far longer than any of the artists (cough! banksy!brainwash!dolk!) here asking for the same kind of money are forgotten.
and around $1 million for the whole set of 14 prints and the massive milk installation.
the gallery is extremely busy. this is their biggest show yet.
but let us know, and we'll hook you guys up.

Ai Weiwei in Singapore (SHOWCARD GIVEAWAY!), by johnnyh on Sept 25, 2013 18:05:59 GMT 1, Must confess I did see the PDF of the work and thought it was pretty poor for him which is a shame. The milk can piece is a really good installation but the rest was just chasing cash which is quite ironic really.
Bit of a shame though

The milk can piece is a really good installation but the rest was just chasing cash which is quite ironic really. Bit of a shame though i think i can understand why you feel that way, but do see the entire collection as a set. not as individual prints for investment. and not through the eyes of a collector looking for value and wall friendliness.
be there, read ai's sentiment via tweets made during the crisis against the sprawling installation on the floor, remember the political climate and what ai is actually doing during that time with those tweets.
ignore the price tags. sometimes the business end of art can be distracting.

On the contrary HF think I am seeing it for what it is. Think your missing the point here this display is purely the business end of art. With the exception of the can piece originally. But this is not that piece this is a copy to flog. I do understand the political climate quite well here and it is not as your implying. There is a lot he could do and say which would be more relevant but e is not saying it here as not as sale able
the milk crisis is over sometime ago. This is old news not what's happening now. The pieces cans excepted are poorly conceived, produced and do not do justice to the type of work he is capable of. They aye charged highly as the Singaporeans will jump on and pay it but they are disapointing. He should be producing much beter than this
to quote " There are people who would fight for freedom but would give up their ideals for transactions" think he may well be guilty of this phrase himself.

I have to disagree with you Johnnyh. Even though the main milk scandal peaked some 5 years earlier, the effects on the children seem to have been forgotten? Renal failure, the carcinogenic risk of melamine is still something which needs to be reminded to the Chinese political class.
Only in August 2013, there was another formula milk scare in China...this time from a New Zealand company importer.
In the same way that other industrial tragedies...e.g. Thalidomide for morning sickness...needs to be discussed to remind us all that we need to be vigilant to failures from authorities, I think Ai WeiWei is doing the same.
Regarding the pdf and prices... Ai Weiwei in 2011 offered the highest return at auction compared to any other living artist. So really...his prices are not the issue here...and very much in line for an artist of his calibre.
Regarding your opinion of the "quality" of the work...that is your opinion, and I respect your right to hold that opinion...but I hold the counter opinion. So we can agree to disagree on this specific point.
Peace

Ai Weiwei in Singapore (SHOWCARD GIVEAWAY!), by highly framable on Sept 26, 2013 8:55:59 GMT 1, hi. this is zhao:
It needs to be felt as a set. treat it like a trip to a big museum. see it as a gesture. a statement. not something for the living room.
with that mindset, one can appreciate better the questions/emotion the installation and the quotes in its many variations/colours bring and the energy it provokes.
executionally, it's different from his usual - exquisite/hand-craftedness most are used to. but the message is quite unbearably sharp and the spirit/irony/wit unmistakably ai.
"cheap" "disposable" "ugly" advertising-like, poison sold in the name of love and nutrition, lies presented in the forms of truths. all over a big land mass of billions. small toxic lies spread thick and vast....re-presented again, with truths and anger headlining the mass media templates of evil and greed.

Ai Weiwei in Singapore (SHOWCARD GIVEAWAY!), by johnnyh on Sept 26, 2013 9:22:27 GMT 1, Anbesivam I understand your point same with HF. But the pieces here say so little and contain little artistic merit. For me this is just a disposable show for a disposable money market in Sing.
It's not speaking out its cashing in. I just expected a lot lot more from him.
Highly as per your point on a local stage Singapore is a living room not a big museum. It's also not a show in the highest profile gallery's so this does strike me as a pure cash generator more than anything else.
i am not disagreeing with what he is saying ect but just the quality and depth behind what he has produced.
anbesivam I understand that he can command those prices and have no issue with that just the level he has produced for this show is the issue
your welcome to support him whatever he churns out but sorry I do not agree.

Sorry to offer a counter commentary to your view again, but I don't follow your premise:
"It's not speaking out its cashing in."
How does an artist speak out any more unequivocally than a bold typeface written message? Does the subjective 'quality' of the art effect this specific message?
You seem to be suggesting that if the art had more "quality" the message would be stronger?
Your last sentence was a bit patronising mate...no offence taken.
