Ai Weiwei in Singapore (SHOWCARD GIVEAWAY!), by johnnyh on Sept 26, 2013 10:42:42 GMT 1, Anbesivam
The point I was trying to make at the beginning is that I was really disappointed in the work he produced for this show. It's not that I dislike him infact the opposite that's why I had PDF of the show from the gallery. Hf was making the point it is all about making a political point my view is that he is in a place of tiny population, I not a huge gallery etc. my view is that this show was not about a political statement (one he has already made). The main piece of the show was first shown in Hong Kong in May and referred to the milk problem but more so to the fact that people from the mainland were buying tier formula from everywhere but china. HK had restricted the sale and transportation across the border like formula was drug.
Singapore does not seem to me to be the best place to be shouting about human rights or to be actively promoting his work. It is hardly the ideal model of a democracy.
So my disapointment in the work is that it is just sloganised one could also imply he has sloganiseed an awful subject/sad issue not to bring it attention But actually just to cash in.
the last point was not meant as condescending just that because it's Ai Wei Wei does not make it great. i just think its a fund raiser for him and I look forward t

Ai Weiwei in Singapore (SHOWCARD GIVEAWAY!), by highly framable on Sept 26, 2013 15:09:30 GMT 1, hi Johnnyh,
thanks for you view. and i totally understand where you're coming from.
it's easy to think everything is about money when you're in Singapore.
and sadly, it usually is.
but i don't think this show is.
the fact that it exists says something.
as we are talking about a government who rarely does anything to offend/stir shit politically.
"Singapore is not THAT bad." - some would protest.
But it can be when it wants to. Even today. eg. local sites (including blogs!) that garner over 50,000 readers must register with the authority and face stiff penalties if it were to publish "offensive" posts.
ai's baby formula show opened to the biggest crowd i've ever seen in a long while. Thousands attended this tiny tiny exhbition of only 14 pieces of work and one installation on opening night. Cameras and reporters were there.
But not much of a peep in the papers the day after.
There was a big news spread interview a month prior, but they didn't know what was showing.
Ai is a very sensitive subject.
it must be kept under control.
The show satisfy the noisy thousands who thirst for the voice of protest.
As this show, obviously, is very offensive to Singapore's biggest clients, China. It is kept quiet enough to keep the buzz of the masses and media down to a harmless level.
It is, i think, as close to the edge, Ai can do in a city like Singapore, without it being disallowed.
If it were about making money, friendlier pieces would've been placed on show, there would be more news coverage. Things on sale would be not as specific or obviously critical - pottery, architectural designs, photographs of new york, middle fingers to european landmarks, zodiac heads etc. pieces that have their knives hidden or none at all - like most contemporary chinese artist would, when they want to rake in cash - soft-core anti-establishment criticisms to make the rich feel edgy and progressive.
but not these. these, i am sure, make the rich feel uncomfortable. it's not meant for them. they are loud protest pieces, they are very personal and direct messages to the chinese government and no one else.
ai knows what Singapore is. and this is how he chooses to present himself on this stage for his first show.
it's like coming into an unfriendly territory and plant a big fuck you to a bigger, even unfriendlier neighbour living over the fence.
"fuck you, don't ever think he+we can forget about the lives that were destroyed and what happened. I am not quitting." it seems to say. despite it being muted very quickly. as these things often do here.

Ai Weiwei in Singapore (SHOWCARD GIVEAWAY!), by mmmike on Sept 26, 2013 15:39:33 GMT 1, Interesting debate. I see both sides and love that this show happened but I'm not as impressed as I was when I first saw pictures. In Toronto right now the Zodiac heads are being removed from city hall after being on display for a few months. At the same time right next to them there is a piece going up with 3,140 bikes, 30 feet high that is taking 3 weeks to put up and will take another 3 weeks to take down. A few blocks away there is the incredible According to What? show at the AGO. the works there are mind blowing. Straight is perhaps the most impressive. Extremely political, beautiful and massive.
While I don't think that the Singapore works are terrible I do agree that compared to some of Ai Weiwei's other work there are not nearly as impressive. But obviously that is just IMHO.

Have you found your Coca Cola Urn yet and re-mortgaged the house mmmike? I haven't found one (for sale) there is one at the AGO (Art Gallery of Ontario) that is lovely. I did take lots of pics. That will have to do me for the time being. Oh and no remortgage because I don't own my apartment
IMO Toronto housing prices are as crazy as Banksy print prices.

are you implying these artworks are made for the rich just because the poor can't afford to own them?
what an awful way to look at art.
the prices are just that, amount of money needed to own them.
They are neither the intention nor the statement the artist is making.
I'm really sorry if they are to you. because you're missing out on what ai's trying to do here.
it does not matter if any, none or all of it were sold.
the art is created, the people have seen them. the gesture made. and that should be enough.
