APs (Artist Proofs) are unique by virtue of the fact that they are APs. It's not complicated. If you're into collecting rare prints or you really like a print but are unable to find it, you may be in the market for an AP if you can find one.
Cheers BMG

(Completely disagree BTW re: AP's being unique...some editions maybe...but not as a blanket rule) Artist proofs are unique in all cases because they are literally rare. There are simply not very many of them createdโ10-15% of the edition # in our productions.
There is a lot of info on APs, PP, etc online, but here's a snippet from wiki #artistproofs: Collectors also usually prefer final artist's proofs even when they are identical to the main edition; if nothing else the print may have been presented to a friend by the artist. Prints are generally sold as limited editions, with a print being cheaper than a drawing or painting because the artist/gallery makes more money by selling multiples. An artist's proof has special value because of its extra rarity and its possible differences from the "standard" print, factors that are often reflected in its price.
Hope this helps. Cheers! BMG

Having a ltd run via an alternate color way, or adding 'embellishments' is a different story.

When asked to clarify they seemed to lose patience and said "dont bother,it's sold" !!

My view is they are an artists bunce money, usually sold outside the edition directly by the artist cutting out the gallery, which is all cool and fair in love and war
However I wouldn't pay more then the usual edition for one
Might have been different in the golden olden days
ETA ooops i just read the thread, and realise its a gallery selling, that kinda of blows my above comment out of the water

BLK MRKT Conor Harrington AP's online., by lifeonwalls on Aug 23, 2013 19:41:38 GMT 1, I try to avoid AP's unless they are numbered AP x/x and or distinguishable from the original edition.
Fairey uses APs as replacements for damaged prints and it's not public knowledge how many are out there and therefore much easier to fake an AP than it would be to fake a 'normal edition' print.
APs may be rarer, but that doesn't automatically mean they are more valuable to everyone.

BLK MRKT Conor Harrington AP's online., by BMG on Aug 23, 2013 20:41:10 GMT 1, Out of curiosity, how many APs are you selling for each print? Also, are they just marked as AP or numbered too? Do they come with a COA stating how many APs were printed? Hi, after a recent flat file count we thought it would be fun to release some of our special prints for collectors out there that might like them. We are only planning on letting go of a few at this time. Most of our APs are individually numbered, signed by the artist and all come with a COA listing the print, total# of APs, and signed by the producer (BLK/MRKT Editions) representative. The artist, of course, also has a small cache for family/friends or commerce.
These APs are not a special/altered version of the original, but an extended 10-15% above and beyond the OG as is standard for numbered print editions. If you're interested, these are gorgeous screen prints recreated from the original paintings and we are very proud of them.
Cheers, BMG

BLK MRKT Conor Harrington AP's online., by randomname on Aug 23, 2013 20:52:34 GMT 1, Artists Proofs used to be different. In the old days, the first prints to come off the press were sharper and clearer. The plates would wear out over the run and the quality would decrease. That's why collectors were willing to pay a premium. Usually, only 10% of the run (at most) would be pulled out as APs.
With modern printing, this is no longer the case. For all intents and purposes, prints are identical. So the premium is only for the sake of rarity. Personally, I think it's more of a snob factor to say you have an AP.
On a side note, an artist offered to sell me a MP of a sold out print I was looking for. One of the screens was accidentally printed twice. She wanted four times the price of the original run. Which I thought was ridiculous and a little insulting.
