Fine art trade guild framers, by chads007 on Aug 23, 2013 21:24:10 GMT 1, I took 2 items to get framed in the last couple months. First time doing it. Limited edition & original. Local framers in the city, nice area. Requested conservation uv glass & usual acid free mount & board & tape.
Finished product is lovely
The paranoid side of me has recently got the better of me. The reverse of the frame had the sticker ticking the type of glass used. All well. However should one receive a full invoice with the specific breakdown of the job? I didn't. Just a till receipt. Is this something I take up with them? (I don't intend to sell, but reassurance is nice, especislly as I plan - maybe - to use them again)
Also, it didn't occur me if they were members of the guild - does it really matter? They've used the glass I requested & most framers use acid free now (even ikea mounts are). I did a quick search and hardly any framers in a 25 mile radius are guild members. Perhaps joining a body is a waste of time & money if they don't regularly do high end work?
Am I being para :s

Fine art trade guild framers, by voodoo1967 on Sept 3, 2013 14:57:59 GMT 1, Only ever use mounts that are conservation std - ie acid free - (300 year life span) , also re the glass - there is a new type of glass available for picture frames- as used on the euro jet fighter plane - not sure of the cost of it - but there is no reflection from it - in fact when compared to normal glass used in framing- from a distance it's hard to see it's even there, my other half uses it - I dont know if they send through the post though - maybe local pickup only I think they have some examples www.cadremont.co.uk/shop/picture-frames-uk/ or they will be showing some examples soon, I will ask her how different it is compared to conservation uv glass

Fine art trade guild framers, by chads007 on Sept 5, 2013 10:46:49 GMT 1, I can see a slight ripple and I don't distrust the glass used.
I spoke to another framer who does Banksys, etc and he said you should always ask for museum board (I didn't, though they said it was a/f), and the framer I spoke to uses a certain type of hinging (can't remember the name), but he said he uses it on his Lowry's, but can use whatever type of hinging I request. This framer, also said he wasn't on the conservation register or FATG etc, but has won FATG awards etc and does all these Lowry's, etc (think 1-2 on here use him). I guess that answers my query re: the value (or lack of) being on the FATG etc
So, do people normally get a breakdown of work carried out?
I don't think I'm going to use the framer I used originally. I should have requested recommendations here beforehand and I don't have full confidence in the grade of materials that may have been used to preserve the work.
Would people say that float mounting is generally safer to use..know that rippling can occur with large pieces, but wondered if this was an issue in reality?
What time of hinging do you usually request..japanese paper & wheat paste?

Fine art trade guild framers, by dotdot on Sept 5, 2013 10:58:35 GMT 1, without trying to add the the bizzare to this thread, what's with the euro jet fighter glass. ?
glass is something which gets even more bizarre when you visit a framer and they show you about 20 different types then ... you can SEE the difference... let alone then trying to remember what they said to describe each one.. but euro fighter glass isn't a description i'd heard before.
coming back to said plot..
anyway.. fwiw - when it comes to framing generally it does help to be conscientious.. i have used JJ .. and mfm..
different but both prof - but when it comes to 'what, when and why' of framing... then you're going down a different path, most will not actually detail exactly what was done (jj provide info on the back and approp ref tracking #).

Fine art trade guild framers, by ABC on Sept 19, 2013 5:29:05 GMT 1, There are so many ways to frame. My local framer in kent is one of the best in the business and was awarded best framer in the country a few year back, they can make cheaper materials look amazing. You pay for what you get. Non reflective UV glass has been around for a while now but is expensive. I always use conservation mount but I certainly do not use the best glass all of the time. Ive got some frames that cost a fortune in my house but ive also got frames costing a few quid from ikea, just depends on print values in my eyes.

Fine art trade guild framers, by dazarino on Sept 19, 2013 8:57:49 GMT 1, My advice is speak to the framer, we spend so much on our decorative pieces of paper that trusting your framer is a must,if you don't like this company next time you have something to frame pop into all your local ones until your happy, I did the same, most of my local framers were just interested in the money but found a guy that really cares about the final product and interested the my art it encases
Happy hunting
