Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by graffuturism on Oct 25, 2013 0:37:07 GMT 1, It will be shared in an auction near you and some 1%er's collection most likely. Would wonder with the provence of these pieces being verified through this show, would a Musuem possibly be looking to obtain one for their collection. If a Musuem did obtain one how would you guys feel about that. It would be shared and preserved correct. Would a museum want one of these when it could probably afford to buy an original straight from the horse? Would it be the same, not that he would even contemplate selling one to a museum. But a work that was made insitu vs a work made for a musuem. I would rather see the real thing even if it was moved to a new location. The famous Winged Victory of Samothrace still holds a power in person although it was moved to the Louvre

Eloquence and pragmatism, damn you... but the word naive is slightly harsh. Am on a phone atm, but will try and string a fee points together tomorrow to discuss some of ur points.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by migsmigsmigs on Oct 25, 2013 0:45:44 GMT 1, I would rather the pieces were left to the streets than chopped up, even if that means they will be buffed or burned over time, these things are preserved through the photos and videos, very much like the graffiti we lost on the NYC subways in the 80s
thats what makes books like Subway Art so good, Martha and Henry capture the moment and preserve it perfectly, the same with Style Wars
todays piece for example is so good due to the placement, once it's chopped all of the context is lost but the pictures will show everything rather than the actual piece itself

Would we do it the same if we knew that history was being made. I love pictures and documentation when there is nothing else to see, but I wish more of our history was preserved for next generations.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Deleted on Oct 25, 2013 0:51:28 GMT 1, Oh FFS!, the greedy money driven bastards!, cant they leave anything alone instead of following Banksy machine around like trailing a cash cow?, its not about his works now is it? its just currency to these greedy fuckers.
OI BANKSY, pick some inaccessible and/or unremovable spots to stencil like public buildings or a police station otherwise just sit outside auction houses and do canvasses to give out as people walk in.
Muppet!.
ps. Whats teeth got to do with it?

Don't get me wrong id love to have saw some preserved like the Crime In the City piece or the Children of the Grave cars, far too many great pieces from that era to list and where completely lost but my point is we know 95% of these will get chopped and never be seen again with the exception of in an auction brochure and I think that's what causes the ire of so many people, in my opinion the shows name sums it all up perfectly Better Out Than In

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by lee3 on Oct 25, 2013 1:09:36 GMT 1, >>>Would wonder with the provence of these pieces being verified through this show, would a Musuem possibly be looking to obtain one for their collection. If a Musuem did obtain one how would you guys feel about that<<<
I'd be stunned if any prominent museum would touch them since they are akin to forgeries without the artist's blessing. Perhaps some local museum but no institution that all of us know by name.
>>>Oh FFS!, the greedy money driven bastards!, cant they leave anything alone instead of following Banksy machine around like trailing a cash cow?, its not about his works now is it? its just currency to these greedy f**kers.<<<<
Ha. I'm presuming, perhaps incorrectly, that Flynt is simply moving that one indoors at that location to be enjoyed amongst the ladies of the night to those that pay cover. Put it behind some plex inside and preserve it and this one might work just as well in that club as it does/did out on the shutter door. Pure speculation on my part but I'd be surprised to see that one end up at whatever tier 5 no-name auction house that's accepting those street consignments without paperwork. It's not like that dude needs the cash unless those clubs are franchises licensing his name.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Agent Provocateur on Oct 25, 2013 1:15:24 GMT 1, Just remembered why I won't do a sh*te convulted post about what happens after Banksy does a piece on the streets.
Imo he's changing the generic 'art' conversation... the whole point of his conflickt with the historic ethos of graffiti and how it fits into the art establishment is an enigma.
Lot's of our siscussions on here come from two opposite viewpoints. One is from appreciation of graffiti for it's fundamental anarchic principles and the other is the aesthetic 'art' commodisisation of anything that can have a monetary value put on it.
As I said in one of my first posts on this thread, Banksy knows exactly what he's doing with this show, getting out, getting up and being seen. Someone made a great post earlier about the use of social media in this show, and how the world's computer screens hav become part of his show. I can't say it better...
Imo Banksy is asking massive questions about all of us and how we commoditise, consume, digest, discuss and ultimately perceive 'art'.
And he's never written anything bullshitty like this post, his messages are always short, succint and wrapped in an approachable humour (even with difficult subjects)...

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Deleted on Oct 25, 2013 1:21:35 GMT 1, I can accept people dogging these pieces because at least that is part of the graffiti vs street art "debate". It has always given it an edge and a sense that it was an sub culture with its own rules and codes of behaviour (however misguided at times). But like any sub culture (Football, Hip Hop, Punk - the list is long) through history it is soon appropriated and degraded by the money men. These people make me sick to my stomach. They have sucked the joy out of this event as they do out of life. Such a shame.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by tonysol on Oct 25, 2013 1:21:40 GMT 1, Here's that statement anyway. Make of it what you will.
The Hustler Club's New York Marketing Director, Steve Karel, offered us this statement: "We're honored that Banksy chose the Larry Flynt's Hustler Club New York to share his art. We respect the art and artist; while we'd love to leave the work in place, it's required we lift the gate when we open for business, so after the public has the day to enjoy it, we will remove the door to keep it safe from vandals until we determine where it can be displayed in the futureβhopefully inside of the club."

Interesting, thx. Though i hadn't heard or read anything and was just speculating. They clearly run a business that people have to pay to get inside to look at something exotic and they probably had more customers than normal today visiting to look at the outside without paying. In that case, it wasn't much of a logical leap to follow the money with that one indoors.
So he just taught us all the equation that street artists can focus on strip clubs in an effort to achieve immortality or at least a longer life. I'm really enjoying the little twists of the mind this month.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by nrgball on Oct 25, 2013 1:26:11 GMT 1, I would rather the pieces were left to the streets than chopped up, even if that means they will be buffed or burned over time, these things are preserved through the photos and videos, very much like the graffiti we lost on the NYC subways in the 80s thats what makes books like Subway Art so good, Martha and Henry capture the moment and preserve it perfectly, the same with Style Wars todays piece for example is so good due to the placement, once it's chopped all of the context is lost but the pictures will show everything rather than the actual piece itself Fair point, yet I would rather see those real pieces and subways on those trains preserved that would be historic, yet we had not foresight at that point. Would we do it the same if we knew that history was being made. I love pictures and documentation when there is nothing else to see, but I wish more of our history was preserved for next generations.
I respect both points.
One the side of preserving, it's out of sight, out of mind. And having the physical work certainly keeps it in sight. But it does take it out of context. So photography would have to play an important role in the documentation.
I know that it has to start somewhere but the only work being "preserved" is Banksy. There are many other urban/graffiti (whatever) artists whose work should be preserved for the reason of documentation. And that's not happening any time soon.
The interesting thing about "graffiti" or urban art is that it has been around as long as we have. Cave painting and other outdoor murals/scrawls are all over the world. And much of it has been preserved in the form of national parks and such.
Sadly our current manifestation of wall art is not acceptable to the powers that be. Although, I have a feeling that this residency will begin to sway the mobs/populations view of outdoor art. Hopefully it will become trendy to bring artists in to paint your walls. This, of course, will always be different for graffiti. Maybe I'm dreaming a bit.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Rubys on Oct 25, 2013 1:50:45 GMT 1, Fast forward to midnight, October 31st, the last item to be uploaded to Banksyny will be a video of a huge bonfire, made up of the burning remains of props, stencils, unsold canvases, trucks, staff, and fake beards. Leave nothing behind. Not even air. Wait, what? Lols. THIS!

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Wearology on Oct 25, 2013 2:18:31 GMT 1, I pass the Hustler Club every night driving to and from work. It is adjacent to the West Side Highway which is a major artery of NY. It is in a part of town where all the tourists that take cruises into NY depart their vessels. It is a high end strip joint and the whole block is owned by Mr. Larry Flynt. When I left work tonight around 7 there was a line of people waiting to view the piece around the block.
