Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by stvro22 on Oct 28, 2013 13:59:11 GMT 1, From StreetArtNews: Three Banksy pieces can be seen right now on Houston and Elizabeth - Grim Reaper closing party I just sit here stymied at this guy's generosity. He could truly be off somewhere charging X dollars per ticket and hawking his work in the art world... but he's freaking giving it away for free to everyone. No doubt-- there will never again be anyone like Banksy. We live in amazing days.
Way to drink the Banksy Kool Aid.
As I've said before I truly admire his creativity but just because he's not charging for "tickets" directly doesn't mean he's not cashing in. How is that not obvious? Banksy is doing what he does for the love and thrill if it all but at the same time he has a huge PR firm behind him. How else would he get the NY Times to even consider posting his Op-Ed piece?
This whole BOTI residency is about raising his exposure level so when he so much as puts a dot on a piece of paper it sells for enough to get braces for all the students in his kids school district. And there's nothing wrong with that. Like I said he's doing it for his creative juices first but not only for it.
His biggest mistake so far was taking a swipe at Canada regarding the Workd Trade Center. Very un-Banksy like IMO. If you want to criticse something don't bash something else to prove your point. And 9/11 is still a very sore subject here in NYC. It doesn't take much to start getting people pissed of and thinking you're taking shots at those that died. Even if it's the furthest thing from his mind there are those that will twist it. He better be careful. This could be his undoing.
The tabloids and local TV are all over his comments this morning. We'll see what comes of it.

Is it fair to say the NY Times NEVER considered posting Banksy's Op-Ed, possibly because he never actually intended it for submission? He has to know that the NYT wouldn't print that, so I highly suspect if he even went through the motions of submitting it, it was simply to truthfully say he was rejected as part of the piece.
To go back: I briefly worked for the Port Authority of NY/NJ (the company/independent agency that owns the WTC site and buildings) during the cleanup and design choosing period. Even at the PA, people were unhappy with the new building. It really only looks impressive from two places - immediately below it looking up and coming in to the city over the GW Bridge or through the Lincoln Tunnel a few hours before sunset when it looks like a giant knife stabbing the sky. Otherwise it just looks uninspired and unfinished. Couldn't agree more with Banksy on this one. They really did cop out and compromise in designing the thing.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by johnnyh on Oct 28, 2013 14:24:43 GMT 1, Must say Stvrod.
Gotta disagree don't think he does have a massive pr machine behind him. Not sure he expected it published he probably just emailed them. Then did the mock up on his site. That's his piece. If he wanted it published lots of others would have. If he was using a massive pr machine he probably would have got it published. The fact that it wasn't tends to imply no pr machine at all in fact.
Been a lot said on cashing in and sure this will probably put prices up. But not sure he gives a toss. Think he is probably very well off and happy where he is at. Think that's something that shows here he actually does not care if he pisses one people off. Think he has only been reverent to 9/11 so if its not appreciated not sure he will care especially if its media based. Think looking at his site things like permission wall etc is more important to him than what the local media say. Couple days left and he is outta there so will not care or respond to it whatever is said good or bad.
Think your seeing the work of a happy man with very few cares in the world and of the cares he has the price of prints and canvasses ain't one of them....the more this has gone on the more obvious it has become that its not about the money in my view.

Otherwise it just looks uninspired and unfinished. Couldn't agree more with Banksy on this one. They really did cop out and compromise in designing the thing. I think you might be right - he never intended to have NYT print it... but not because he didn't think they'd approve it; they're the NYT. After some reflection it occurs to me that they'd love few things more than to be the paper printing that piece in their Sunday Art section. Why not? Like I said, they're the New York Times.
They printed Putin's column which was definitely equally if not way more offensive!
Perhaps he wrote it originally wanting to send it to NYT but then reconsidered and decided against it; maybe he thought blowing it out onto the NYT like that may be a BIT too far... instead, much better to slide it onto his own website -- requiring more effort to find, narrowing the audience to mostly fans, etc.?
I also think it's kind of hilarious to read that first paragraph a few times in a row. He's been staying in New York for a few weeks and the one thing that strikes him is that ugly building. LOL!
Maybe he's martyring himself by bringing the building into (more) global spotlight? Maybe his main goal was to get people everywhere talking about how there's a building in that hallowed spot, again, finally; and in his own Banksy way, figured that causing a bit of controversy was the way to go about it.
It's got an international message board talking about that building, hasn't it?

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by mmmike on Oct 28, 2013 14:35:38 GMT 1, There is only 1 place in NY that would be fitting for a finale for Banksy and that is the Mecca of street art 5 Pointz before the building is demolished later this year and sold to the highest bidder. 5 Pointz: New York graffiti mecca calls on Banksy for help in fight to stay alive Queens graffiti space hopes last-ditch lawsuit and maybe a word from world's most famous street painter can save its work Is this easy to get to by subway? I was told that the Graffiti hall of fame was the place to go. How do the two compare?

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by rioja on Oct 28, 2013 14:39:37 GMT 1, Probably just a troll looking for hits but a bizarre new account on twitter purports to 'reveal Banksy' next year after being 'double-crossed' by him. Looking at the (largely ignored) tweets he/she seems to have taken umbrage over the NY Times op-ed article.

So no, it's not at all difficult to reach. It's also across the street from MoMA PS1, which means you have modern art and graffiti art all displayed on one corner, essentially.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by mmmike on Oct 28, 2013 14:42:45 GMT 1, I just sit here stymied at this guy's generosity. As a Canadian I read it more as a joke and didn't take offence. For the most part the buildings in Canada are smaller than in NYC so I see what he is saying. In Toronto there are a few nice buildings IMO, the AGO comes to mind. As well the CN Tower is taller than any in NY. But really who cares? We are talking about buildings. I think Banksy misses the mark here because it draws attention to the building rather than the real issues of terrorism and acts of aggression. I think the real sign of the US losing in the one was not based on the size of a building but rather how the US has escalated their terrorist acts and acts of aggression in response to (the US as victims) 9-11.

Now it's time for pay back by revealing his secret identity on May 1st, 2014 at 8pm EST. New York City · banksyrevealed.wordpress.com" Leaked from the internet time machine

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Deleted on Oct 28, 2013 15:22:29 GMT 1, The market stall suggests that part of the show is indeed about the money. Not for the purpose of upping his prices though. The stall has been the most widely covered/broadcast piece of the whole show so far due to the money that was made/not made. Not the art. It's obvious to me that Banksy cares deeply about lots of things and that's why I love his art. It would seem the more money Banksy products are worth, the more he struggles with it. If you weren't a Banksy fan and were to look at all the pieces in the show so far, I'm not sure you would say it's the work of a happy man. Ignorance is bliss.
