Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Carrie on Oct 29, 2013 12:47:17 GMT 1, Really don't think it's being taken that seriously around here man. This isn't Die Hard I had a very similar conversation with someone about a week ago about how the new WTC looks boring compared to the original designs. I don't see it as him mocking 9/11 I looked at it as someone giving an honest opinion that a lot of people think but dont say. You should always be entitled to an opinion on the aesthetics or visual appeal of an object (building) regardless of what it represents. If you walk through a cemetry and see a memorial that you dislike, it doesn't mean you are being disrespectful towards the person buried underneath it....

Silhouette kid with hammer 14. Tribeca twin tower piece 15. Waiting In Vain 16. Concrete Confessional 17. The Musical (dirty underwear in particular) 18. All-city mcdonalds 19. Plato quote piece 25. NY Times Open ed column 26. The grumpier you are piece 26. mobile garden truck 27. Ants piece 28. No Art due to police activity (piece?)
Crazy Horse was one of my favourite stencil pieces of the show so far, but the $60 art stall stunt was borderline genius.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Deleted on Oct 29, 2013 13:54:59 GMT 1, The robot looks like a toy robot to me. Is the barcode just the robot's tag or is it a product code? Isn't it handy that he has pincers at the end of one arm but fingers able to spray at the end of the other.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Carrie on Oct 29, 2013 13:55:11 GMT 1, Just as I suspected when I posted here earlier in the day. Going anywhere near the 9/11 topic is going to set off a firestorm. He really did make a "rookie" mistake. Like a NYer going somewhere else in the world and trying to comment on a tragedy they viewed from afar. You just don't do it. You nod and listen to the locals. Yes everyone is entitled to their opinions but Banksy is now a celebrity and when celebrities make comments on politics and such most people just want them to shut the F up. NYPD and FDNY are going to make it their mission to expose him. I hope they fail but I can say one thing if Rudy Guiliani was still mayor he would be in Rikers Island jail already. He has become a celebrity through his fame (or more specifically Anonymity) but he is still an artist, a controversial one at that, Creating a piece about an uneasy topic is a bit different. I don't understand why people are so shocked, Banksy has been creating controversial/political art for a very long time, what makes these pieces about 9/11 so different?

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Sacked... on Oct 29, 2013 15:02:54 GMT 1, Not sure if this has been posted before, but here's a piece by Tyson Mitman explaining why NY taggers hate Banksy so much :
nypost.com/2013/10/25/why-people-deface-banksys-work/
"Observers may think the writer is a jerk, but being considered a jerk by the mainstream is an added bonus".

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Hairbland on Oct 29, 2013 15:26:34 GMT 1, I just can't believe that was the piece- some elaborate article to prove that he can't get printed in the ny gutter press..... Just seems all quite excessive, even for banksy I don't agree. As an artist Banksy would seem to have an idea for this month long residency - you don't just come to NYC to be on the world's stage with no plan, no artist's statement. To do otherwise would be shallow, and the more obvious pieces (Farm Truck at Farmers' Mkt, old Meatpacking District) seem to have meaning. The less-understood pieces might become clear once a statement was issued.
For example, how do "The Musical" pieces tie into the Times Op-Ed piece. This project is a major undertaking, if it's a month of attention whoring I would be surprised...but then I've been surprised before.
Time will tell. Until then we can only guess.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by BK83 on Oct 29, 2013 15:37:55 GMT 1, The robot looks like a toy robot to me. Is the barcode just the robot's tag or is it a product code? Isn't it handy that he has pincers at the end of one arm but fingers able to spray at the end of the other. Think it had something to do with how Graffiti has become some kind of machinated, automated, commoditised economy. In a way, this robot work compliments the "Ghetto 4 Life" work that was shown earlier. (Or at least the ideas originate from the same place.)
Edit: Also, the fact that the robot had a juvenile, toy-like quality seems to bear relevance, too.

He clearly wanted this article to be published. They didn't publish it. He then had a dig at them for not publishing it.
The original "piece" was about the new WTC building, not about press censorship.
I'm not sure why someone's article not being published is that surprising. The press don't publish everything they are sent. Its not the presses job to be a publishing platform for any old git that wants to write an article about something.
That's what the internet is for.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by kbfrombk on Oct 29, 2013 16:10:44 GMT 1, Isn't the point of his column that he doesn't see it fitting to the memory of the lost lives and tragedy, to merely 'beat' the predecessor? I thought he was basically criticizing the new tower for lacking anything appropriately special in commemorating what occurred there. Regardless Mr. Randomname, I'm happy that he's gotten you chirping about it!! I've commented on almost every piece. So I wouldn't read too much into that. In general, I find very tall buildings to be boring. In some respects, that's just the nature of the beast. But like I said earlier, if he doesn't think this is a fitting tribute, I'd like to see his take on a building that is. Wouldn't you? This just feels a bit lazy. RN yes I've read your posts - I didn't mean to say "happy that he's finally gotten you chirping"... I meant more that I'm thankful to have it strike some conversation, and to have your input.
**Condensing**
I read the NY Times Op piece on Banksy's website yesterday and I can see how the Daily News could interpret it as offensive & insensitive to the victims of this tragedy. Whoever wrote it sounded like a pompous elitist that has lost their grip on historical topics that are important to the common man. Next time Bansky shouldn't listen to his PR representatives so much and follow his gut. Maybe he should go back to spray painting farm animals and carnival rides to get back in touch with his roots. Talking smack about 9/11 is a no no in America especially by a foreigner who wasn't here to experience that awful day and the psychological & physical toll it took on the American people and the countless other international families that were affected by this event. Banksy should stick to art and building his brand in preparation for his LA show in a few months and leave America's national tragedies to it's citizens to sort out. Please tell me where this article is offensive to the victims and where did he mock about the 9/11 victims? I can't see that, and i think an artist should be allowed to say something to every topic he wants (not only an artist). On the other hand i'm just a foreigner... Come on! I'm with ya love. xxxxxxx In addition to not finding the article offensive as an American (I speak only for myself), I think the piece in Tribeca (Oct. 15) was a beautiful, moving tribute to the rebirth of the city (and, by extension, the nation) after those horrible events. The fact that it was placed in the neighborhood that absorbed the majority of ash and debris can't be a coincidence. The singed flower growing from the Goldsworthy-esque crack was a lovely touch, even if it didn't last. And his criticism in the NYT piece, I think, was really about how the building didn't reflect the energy and character of the city, not that he was somehow impugning the city's character. Yeah I don't really care if you're American, or if you're a New Yorker, or a foreigner. The symbolism is same - it's more personal sure, as a New Yorker, but that in no way means a foreigner has no right to comment!

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by sin on Oct 29, 2013 16:50:44 GMT 1, the offensive part is that the 9/11 commission was a sham. the death of 3000 people was used as a justification to kill tens of thousands. if you are pissed off banksy called your building shit and not pissed off that your are being played as fools and blindly supporting the murder of people around the world, then you are an idiot and it would be great if you would just pull your bottom lip up over your head and swallow. thanks.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by BK83 on Oct 29, 2013 16:59:09 GMT 1, The problem with the Banksy WTC/Freedom Tower article is that he sounded like a spoiled, yawning whinger, complaining about something, but offering no resolve. What good is that? It doesn't bear any significant relevance. His opinions, whilst perfectably acceptable to communicate (free speech and all that), aren't--and can't--be validated by supporting fact other than his own point of view (limited as it is).
Now, let's imagine New York went ahead and built something ostentatiously pretentious--a real "UP YOURS!" to the terrorists who so callously attacked the United States on 9/11. I'm sure Banksy would have something critical to say about that, and no doubt the entire global community, too.
My personal opinion: the memorial site--the two empty spaces where the towers once stood that are now huge, empty, square waterfalls--that is some architectural beauty. The new Freedom Tower is a tower, it need not be anything more. We don't need to throw anything in the face of anyone. Life has moved on in New York. The terrorists didn't win.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by randomname on Oct 29, 2013 17:23:27 GMT 1, Has anyone tried decoding the hidden message in the robot? The best I can make of it is "132741" is the hex color code for a dark shade of blue. And the "25" could be referring the the 25% darker version. Which just happens to be very similar to NYPD blue.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Gramvino on Oct 29, 2013 17:30:14 GMT 1, I hope he does something big today. Surely he'll end it all with a bang in the next few days.
I'll be disappointed if he doesn't do something massive.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by randomname on Oct 29, 2013 17:34:52 GMT 1, Has anyone tried decoding the hidden message in the robot? The best I can make of it is "132741" is the hex color code for a dark shade of blue. And the "25" could be referring the the 25% darker version. Which just happens to be very similar to NYPD blue. Yes dude. Google the numbers and it is the first thing to come up. It was on this thread a couple of pages ago. it is the sequencing number of homo sapien (human) bit.ly/Ht6ySdkeep up! I would like to keep up. But sadly some asshole expected me to work at work yesterday and I was unable to do so.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Hairbland on Oct 29, 2013 17:50:57 GMT 1, That dude looks kinda like the garden truck driver. and the lettering and price similar fonts to the original Central Park sign. Amusing.

I also would have liked to see a sketch or rendering of what he thinks it should be.
