Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by graffuturism on Oct 7, 2013 23:23:11 GMT 1, Perhaps naively, I'm pretty shocked about the reaction that BOTI is getting in NYC. There has been some great coverage and lots of positive postings, but also there is another side of things were there appears to be nothing short of jealousy from locals. I suppose I can in part expect that, but for me it seems like a narrow minded reaction to an event that has the opportunity to make a hugely positive impact to the street art world in NYC. Surely some of these douches tagging the works should stop and recognise that they have more to gain from leaving the works up unblemished, than they have from fleeting noteriety from tagging them. Just leaves me scratching my head. I mean, these are grown adults out there, acting like playground kids.
Do you really think that the work wouldnt have been tagged and destroyed after seeing this happen to all the others last week, not only by graffiti artists but by fans as well. There is plenty of blame to go around lets not forget the previous pieces and the shrines now adorning them.
The comments coming about are exactly why graffiti artists dont appreciate street art and its contingent. Double standards is always a topic that comes about. Jealousy I dont see as a motive, I think people need to understand the NY attidude in general when it comes to graffiti.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by londonboy on Oct 7, 2013 23:37:47 GMT 1, That Omar guy isn't the brightest bulb. Why would he use red paint? Anyway I think that is enough fame for him. Can someone write over his tag already? "Omar m'a tuer"
I don't think many people will understand this, But really good.. It made me laugh

Please explain the NY attidude when it comes to grafitti. I got no problems with defacing and buffing Banksy, but i only see a guy spraying some red circles on a heart. I really don't get it, looks like only destroying it.

Not aware of any fans destroying any banksy works- can u give me some examples?
Previous posts highlighted that locals were annoyed that banksy appeared to have a free reign on the city (unlikely to be correct, but that's the perception), and others appear jealous of the attention he's getting. Also noticing a lot of defensiveness coming from locals on the subject too.
Double standards argument doesn't hold water for me- there is a clear diff between making a pretty picture, or meaningful social comment, vs a quick scrawl that most would interpret as vandalism

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by graffuturism on Oct 7, 2013 23:45:37 GMT 1, Love. I feel like knowmatter what I say it sounds like Im condoning banksy getting dissed. This is not the case. I just can't stand by and hear naive comments being made. The NY attitude is agressive and as another poster related from NY writers he knew they arent happy with the double standard aspect of it. I cant explain in one paragraph the history of the NY attitude but basically any out of towner will need to pass the test of aggression meaning take on force with force. Respect is given with the pushback given and gained through this interaction. Artists around the world all try to come to NY to make a name for themselves, the local writers are experienced in this sort of thing. This has nothing to do with this Omar guy or this banksy dis, just the attitude towards any writer coming to town unless you are painting with locals and other writers can obviously see you have a guide so to speak. But again this Banksy would be destroyed regardless lets call a spade a spade, none of the other pieces lasted why would anyone think this one would be different.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Deleted on Oct 7, 2013 23:49:49 GMT 1, I'm a huge fan of Banksy but street art lives and dies on the street, perspexing work is a fucking abomination that entirely misses what the work represents.
Complaining about work getting tagged misses the point.
Yes we all understand that the original piece is altered/ destroyed/ gone such is life , deal with it.
Life is coping with loss.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Winter on Oct 7, 2013 23:58:59 GMT 1, It would be far more impressive if instead of going over Banksy's work a local produced something better next to it to show off local talent. I'm sure Omar representing local talent isn't going to please too many people.

100% agree. I think most people should blame Banksy for his work being destroyed. Through his use of social media and his website he is actually perpuating the works demise. He is destroying his own work by spreading the word using his fans and media against himself. If Banksy really wanted the work to be organic and last longer he wouldnt publicize this residency or his pieces. His agenda is calling for attention and unfortunetly in this reality this is how people deal with his work. Banksy is using everyone to destroy his work. Those upset about it miss this point of the excercise.

I have to completely disagree here. Banksy promoting what he does is quite different from banksy posting that he wants all his works to be defaced. Fault lies with people holding the cans, not someone posting a picture on a wall. As an aside, I doubt banksy cares much about the defAcing anyway and is probably v pragmatic about it all.
Re the NYC scene, as I understand it, banksy first painted in NYC almost 20yrs ago, he also painted with some of the American legends of street art, so what more should / must he do?

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Deleted on Oct 8, 2013 0:10:50 GMT 1, Eventful day on the Banksy hunt...
Approaching the site
A little closer, all seems in order and the train and 3 subway lines I had to take seemed well worth it, as it was a cracker of a piece
Notice that little camera...
I had seen a guy across the street. I walked by him, nodded, and walked around to the other side of the crowd. I take one shot of fellow Banksy hunter Nicole. she walks back toward the street. Then, all of a sudden, the guy from across the street quickly walks toward the piece, covers his face with one hand then yells "No one photograph my face" in a gruff voice while pointing/waving at the crowd. (it's funnier when I mimic him)
One second later he sprays the balloon. I was a bit in shock, it's like I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I could hear differing notes of exasperation, disbelief and annoyance, a few people called him names while he was painting. He turns around and points right at me so I can't see his face and walks quickly to his bike, rides down the street and stays there watching the crowd.
The crowd was like what the f**k did that asshat just do? A reporter went down and interviewed him, I asked him what the guy said, and he said something like that 'he was a graffiti writer and that's what he does'.
Then that was it... we chatted back and forth about what an idiot that guy was, and a couple of people felt Banksy was personally setting up the tagging. I don't agree. I think he knows it will happen, but obviously isn't asking lame writers to tag his s**t.
And after a while people went back to taking pictures and having their pictures taken. It was a little sad though, knowing 5 minutes earlier their pictures would have looked as they expected when they set out from home.
On the way home I happened across this and it made me smile

Also great shots of the action taking place.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Black Apple Art on Oct 8, 2013 0:18:41 GMT 1, See, I was right when I said about page 3 or 4 that this show were gonna be showing Banksy stuff even though it was denied! I HATE it when shows use another artists PRINTS to create an impression that they're part of it! Be honest guys! Never said he was part of it and in fact have not listed his name or images in any of the media for the event. There will be some his works there as I think many don't get to see his work in person and I see at as a chance for some to do so. You will notice on the website and all show material his name is not mentioned once other than the artist profiles page ( where he is the only one not designated at a show participant). There is no intent to deceive, we have relationships with all of the other artists participating on some level (love working with these talents btw) and have listed them as such. Showing his work is far different than claiming he is "part of the show". Only posted it on the site because it seemed appropriate given the last installation and I really like that image.
So to make it clear to all... we have over 14 artists participating in this event and Banksy is NOT one of them. Hope that helps.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Hairbland on Oct 8, 2013 0:19:32 GMT 1, was talking to some artist buddies in a rather well-known/respected nyc graffiti collective. they too were annoyed w banksy being in town. for them, it wasn't really about anything else other than banksy getting a free pass / "pardon" from the city to paint. true or false, I think for them the frustration lies in the fact that they've been locked up for painting on more than one occasion, and they don't understand why someone from outside of NY, let alone the US, would have the right to get away with it. That would be lame on their part, he's obviously at a much higher level than they are (at least the taggers defacing) so if true then they don't really know that much about art. If anyone from Banksy's crew coordinated anything with the city it would be because NYC realized the value of the chatter, in a way similar Christo's Gates or Eliason's Waterfalls.
It appears the phrase "an artists residency" is plural not possessive, so maybe this is the plan.

Seriously that's laughable

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Deleted on Oct 8, 2013 0:27:09 GMT 1, Am I enjoying this or not.....I don't know anymore
This is becoming quite surreal. Christ we are just voyeurs. We stand behind a camera and witness without acting or being directly involved. Always one step removed. We crowd around a van watching through a screen instead of actually looking. We watch someone defacing a piece of work which was being enjoyed by many and film him instead of speaking. We have become paralysed. I don't think for a moment that this was what this event was supposed to reveal but my god its proving interesting. Really want to see how this plays out...........or doesn't.
Bit tired now ...bedways is bestways

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by naughtyshorty on Oct 8, 2013 0:33:14 GMT 1, The outrage and indignation just makes me think of the daily mail, oh for a world where everything is just so and all I want goes ... Rebels without a clue.
Not sure you realise how ironic your last statement is..,

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by iamzero on Oct 8, 2013 0:33:23 GMT 1, Just out of interest I wonder how many people that are happy that these new Banksy pieces are being defaced almost in an instant were quick to show their disapproval of Banksy modifying Robbo's piece?
