Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Deleted on Oct 8, 2013 0:36:24 GMT 1, Am I enjoying this or not.....I don't know anymore This is becoming quite surreal. Christ we are just voyeurs. We stand behind a camera and witness without acting or being directly involved. Always one step removed. We crowd around a van watching through a screen instead of actually looking. We watch someone defacing a piece of work which was being enjoyed by many and film him instead of speaking. We have become paralysed. I don't think for a moment that this was what this event was supposed to reveal but my god its proving interesting. Really want to see how this plays out...........or doesn't. Bit tired now ...bedways is bestways Nice play on Clockwork bedways is rightways damn ...did I get it wrong getting old.....A bit tired, maybe. Best not to say more. Bedways is rightways now, so best we go homeways and get a bit of spatchka. Right, right? thats better

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by naughtyshorty on Oct 8, 2013 0:43:56 GMT 1, I'm a huge fan of Banksy but street art lives and dies on the street, perspexing work is a f**king abomination that entirely misses what the work represents. Complaining about work getting tagged misses the point. Yes we all understand that the original piece is altered/ destroyed/ gone such is life , deal with it. Life is coping with loss. Could not agree more. Said something similar several pages ago I believe.
Perhaps art on the street has evolved beyond graff origins? Sure the canvas is live and open for alteration but continual buffing is only one interpretation of why it lives on the streets. Perhaps another isn't so that it can evolve, but so that it's accessible to the broadest audience. That would make preservation more important surely...
Which do u think is more important to banksy?

I was wondering why more of these arent being restored like this. The paint he was using in the pic looks like the new Krylon which is the wateriest shittiest paint there is. It could be easily cleaned with some spirits as banksy more than likely used graffiti paint which is tougher.

Am I going to get in a fight with some guy who wants to spray spraypaint over spraypaint on a wall in the middle of Brooklyn. NO, cameras involved or not.
And with catching him in the act, It's not like people had to run for a camera. I was in the middle of photographing the piece as I had gotten there only minutes before.
Now if that were my house/property that would be a different story.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Deleted on Oct 8, 2013 0:49:52 GMT 1, Just out of interest I wonder how many people that are happy that these new Banksy pieces are being defaced almost in an instant were quick to show their disapproval of Banksy modifying Robbo's piece?
Who's happy? I see understanding and acceptance, against an inability to grasp the nature of the street.

I think you should consider what your actually proposing... Basically stifling change.
Let's put everything in a Perspex box so it can't damaged, remove the air and all slowly choke too while we're at it.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Hairbland on Oct 8, 2013 1:00:27 GMT 1, That would be lame on their part, he's obviously at a much higher level than they are (at least the taggers defacing) so if true then they don't really know that much about art. If anyone from Banksy's crew coordinated anything with the city it would be because NYC realized the value of the chatter, in a way similar Christo's Gates or Eliason's Waterfalls. It appears the phrase "an artists residency" is plural not possessive, so maybe this is the plan. Whether or not he is a better artist means nothing in NYC graff. He has not earned the respect from them. He is not prolific here. He does not get up on billboards or high up construction projects. He is not hitting every corner with a sticker or a tag. Why do you think guys (and girls) like UFO, Cost, Nekst (RIP), Adek, BASTO, KATSU, Enx, ELLE, NET, HAMBO, and even NEMEL (just a few off the top of my head) never have there stuff bombed over? They have earned the respect from the NYC crews. I know back in the late 90s and early 2000s Banksy was very prolific out in England but her in NYC that means nothing to these guys. Now this doesnt mean all of them are going to go tag over his stuff. 99% wont. The few graff guys I know in some of the bigger crews dig his work. But like it or not Banksys work is a target in NYC - always has been and always will be. Its one of the reasons why I was surprised when he started doing the pieces here and not in LA where his work seems to last. Apples and oranges. He obviously has an organized project underway with perhaps an artist's statement to follow. I don't view this as Banksy coming to NYC to tag. Much like KAWS' days of interventions are over.

So nothing in life should be preserved? Have u honestly thought that through for more than a few seconds? Shall we redevelop the coliseum, acropolis and Machu Picchu whilst we are at it, and let da vincis work and drawings spoil and get destroyed too?

I have an old school urban artist mate and over a coffee today I was showing him the NY images of the pieces (he doesn't subscribe to any social media). He stopped right away and couldn't believe people were tagging over the pieces. His shock was followed by the quote "man... that's just straight out disrespect." From his point of view when he was in the game, there was no excuse for that other than intentional malice. I then wondered with the absence of these images now having a world wide audience if they would be tampered with at all. There are numerous big named pieces just blocks from my house that have been unmolested for months and many years but with a media frenzy in front of one of them it might not last an hour.

I'm not surprised. He's making the biggest statement possible to the most amount of people possible in one fell swoop. He's got fans, writers, media, celebrity and the, wealthy eating out of his palm locally and worldwide. Like I said, the man has intention and the intelligence to make a statement. And he wants his statement heard not just now, live in NYC but through time and within history. I think he's interested in legacy. Just my opinion.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by graffuturism on Oct 8, 2013 1:30:56 GMT 1, Have u honestly thought that through for more than a few seconds? Shall we redevelop the coliseum, acropolis and Machu Picchu whilst we are at it, and let da vincis work and drawings spoil and get destroyed too? Its an argument that would bore this thread, so Ill say my point quik. The artistic avante garde have talked about the abolishment of the museum over 100 years ago yet it remains. Graffiti/street/urban Art is the abolition of the musuem and thus the need for its mortality. Our art is a living entity that lives and dies on the street. Of course those that follow the musuem structure will attempt to conserve the artform as that has been the normal course of action over the years. Yet they are laying their intent on a work of art who's purpose was never a musuem. Street art is one of the only artforms that acts outside the market in its purest form, it does not act as a commidity or have materiliastic intentions at its core. Again I am speaking about art painted in public, not prints or gallery work that most artists dabble in also.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by camosydney on Oct 8, 2013 6:55:53 GMT 1, I read an article (cant remember where), that was pondering whether this might be some sort of retrospective show of sorts for Banksy. The use of the balloon lends itself to this, but more so does the musical score to the audio (Memory - Cats) also drops hints to this ?

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Gunny on Oct 8, 2013 7:05:12 GMT 1, KING ROBBO - REMEMBER HIM?
All the Banksy stuff at the moment has made me think of Robbo and the situation he is in. I didn't really know the story so I have been researching it today and finished off by watching the documentary on youtube 'graffiti wars'. (great watch and really interesting story)
All I can say is 'what a shame' for the guy and his family! I also think he is right in many of the things he said in the documentary - Banksy should not have gone over that original piece of art at the canal.
I am sure it has been said before, but I hope he gets well soon, and I hope he gets more 'voice' on this forum during this 'Banksy month' - he deserves to have a voice!
Would be great If Banksy actually acknowledged him and did a piece for him in New York! As far as I can make out 'Robbo is a legend', as is Banksy! A bump for his facebook page 'King Robbo'
KING ROBBO - REMEMBER HIM?

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Quinnster on Oct 8, 2013 8:14:50 GMT 1, I'm surprised there have been no comparisons with Dumbo being shot and the defacing of Banksys work.
