Ai Weiwei Skateboard Decks, by Dr Plip on Sept 27, 2013 22:54:37 GMT 1, This is just my opinion (obviously), but does Ai Wei's art not look a little "tacky" on skateboards? Is the serious nature of the message not lost a bit? Or does it help spread some understanding of the China crisis to a wider audience?

Ai Weiwei Skateboard Decks, by Coach on Sept 27, 2013 23:39:42 GMT 1, I got all excited and ordered then read their definition of "signed in the deck" which means not signed but rather there is a fake signature printed on the deck. Not happy. I asked for a refund. Had they said unsigned originally I may have bought a set but now it is such a let down.
Yes. Saw that. I've seen signed in the plate plenty of times. First time I've ever seen signed in the deck!

Ai Weiwei Skateboard Decks, by papaneuf on Sept 28, 2013 6:58:14 GMT 1, A bit mis-leading if you ask me, so the artist probably hasn't had any input into these at all and I wouldn't classify them as signed at all!
I almost bought but โฌ300 for an unsigned edition of 150 (450 in total); thankfully it's an easy pass...

Yes old buildings crap way back especially in the country areas. Govt should have told the truth etc but remember it was a major earth quake. Likewise the milk crisis finnished quite some time ago really. this place his very modern similar if not more infrastructure than most western cities. So the crisis are no different to what goes on in the uk or USA really.
They are often slightly larger as 3 billion people or whatever live here so you do have to apply a large multiple to put things in perspective and comparrison. The state controlled down trodden Chinese is a bit of western ignorance and portrayed by dissidents but not the opinion of the very vast majority of citizens Chinese and foreigners.

The state controlled down trodden Chinese is a bit of western ignorance and portrayed by dissidents but not the opinion of the very vast majority of citizens Chinese and foreigners. I agree. But I think it's fair to hold a mirror up to a government, for its failings, and say "please do better". That goes for all governments. "With great power comes great responsibility". Isn't that on the statue of liberty somewhere?
And I know that there are a lot of people in China, but there's always room for improvement. I, in no way, believe that China is some f**ked up, hellhole for most Chinese. Modern China has been incredibly prosperous for many ordinary Chinese citizens. f**king s**t for some others though, but that's life. If you can give a voice to those that are suffering, no matter how many or few, then why wouldn't you?
Truth and honesty. That's always nice from government. That and transparency. Oh and if they can learn from mistakes, that's good too. I guess that's where artists can play a part and say "Hey, you f**ked up. We're not happy. I'm showing this to the world, on a skateboard, now try not to f**king do it again".
Having said all that, an artist does need to eat, and lower priced multiples do enable people of modest incomes to own an authorized Ai Weiwei artwork.

Ai Weiwei Skateboard Decks, by johnnyh on Sept 28, 2013 15:39:56 GMT 1, Ahh yes but the question is Does Ai Wei Wei represent those people or is he selling westerners what you want to hear His Sing show the other week full of slogans for sale in one of the most undemocratic democratic nations but had no worris at $40k a pop. He is not particularly liked in China... Not by the gov but by the people. As he is often seen as now against china and a bit of a western mouth piece. Selling anti Chinese to the west. Not saying that's correct but that's how the Chinese feel. He se Los what the west thinks is wrong with china not what the Chinese think is wrong. He made and took a lot of gov money so is kind of a bit of a go with what's paying rather than a spokesman note trying to give a view of how the Chinese see him as opposed to my view here. My view is a mixture as I love his big works and some of his statements but think he is becoming a parody of himself

He is loved in China by those who know what is going on. A lot of people don't know him or just know what the government tells them but those that know, love him. He is a human rights hero. I spoke with a couple of his guys (with a friend translating) yesterday. I now have even more respect for him and his team.
There will always be haters but Ai Weiwei doing a lot more to make this a better world than I am. So in my books he is alright. Stop hating it isn't healthy.

Ai Weiwei Skateboard Decks, by sakyamuni on Sept 28, 2013 17:03:16 GMT 1, We can argue as much as we like about wei wei's work and recent releases, but there is one thing that can't be denied, and i am quoting a recent reports by human rights Watch: "despite the countryโs three decades of rapid modernization, the government remains an authoritarian one-party system that places arbitrary curbs on freedom of expression, association, religion, prohibits independent labor unions and human rights organizations, and maintains party control over all judicial institutions. The government also censors the press, internet, and publishing industry, and enforces highly repressive policies in ethnic minority areas in Tibet, Xinjiang, and Inner Mongolia."

Cash eh? Still think you're talking about the money...not the art.
If you can stop staring at the price tag for a minute you might be able to appreciate the value.

Ai Weiwei Skateboard Decks, by Gentle Mental on Sept 28, 2013 20:06:45 GMT 1, so it's wrong to: put art on skateboards? put protest art on skateboards? put art on burgers? (?) sell work at 40k when most of your work goes for at least half a mill at auctions? be critical of the chinese government (that, at the very least, put you in jail for over 80days for no reason?) speak the language of the west or the language of anyone who believes in freedom (cuz that's pandering?) to make er... "slogans"? to produce art involving things that happened a while ago because it's not as fresh as syria?
i think you wanted an ai weiwei in your expensive home to make that distinguished, expensive understatement statement, but find the work not "oriental" enough. and of course, too pricey for something so "advertising"/"western" like.
you want the good-old fashion Chinese Protest art like bicycles and coca cola on ming vase.
these ain't. so sorry.
