Calling all Geeky Nerds, by Manty on Oct 6, 2013 16:14:31 GMT 1, Hi
I have a tv, flat screen sony old style non smart like myself.
My son has a smart (like him) tv, and its bloody excellent, has netflix, one channel, you tube etc etc all on the same remote.
Other son a while back sorted me a media centre for my old style non smart tv, but quite frankly it gets on my tits (I have to turn it on, wait for it to boot, spend 10 minutes getting the bluetooth keyboard to connect, then scratch head trying to remember how I got xmbc, get up grab a beer, forget what i was doing, and decide to watch adverts instead, or call son to show my how to do it, he has a pop at me and calls me thick, I agree. So it doesn't get used, I now dislike it and the £300 down the swanny
Without having to buy another smart TV which seems wasteful (and expensive) whats the best thing to use to make my non smart smart.
I am thinking apple tv 2 jailbroken, (which was my idea before super salesman son got me to buy a media centre piece of crap)
any other ideas? has anyone got a apple tv2? is it the mutts nuts?

Calling all Geeky Nerds, by Baby Dave on Oct 6, 2013 17:09:22 GMT 1, I've got an apple tv2 jailbroken. I love it. I love it so much I bought one of my mates one for his birthday. He loves it too. There are a few glitches every now and again but these are easily remedied. If you run xbmc off the Apple TV it will be very dependent on wifi strength etc.
I say get one. You won't look back

Calling all Geeky Nerds, by Deleted on Oct 6, 2013 17:09:47 GMT 1, Quite a simple solution is to re check the sellotape holding the box on top of telly hasnt come adrift, then reboot it. If that fails do what dotdot suggests, i'd go along with that suggestion.

Calling all Geeky Nerds, by Baby Dave on Oct 6, 2013 17:11:59 GMT 1, Just remember that if you get a jail broken one it will be running on an old firmware. This won't matter at all as the working platform is so basic.
Just make sure NOT to update the firmware as it will wipe the jailbreak. It will be easy enough to re-jailbreak if you do but you will have to install a majority of the repos manually (especially if you update to the latest firmware).
Blimey. I nearly sound like I know what I'm on about!

Calling all Geeky Nerds, by Strange Al on Oct 6, 2013 17:18:35 GMT 1, Lots of options, depending on how much you want to spend and what functionality you're after.
Apple TV certainly a good option. As an alternative, consider a Sony Blu-Ray player. You can pick up an entry level player for £50-60 quid (I'd probably go for last year's bdps490, which is now only £60 at Richer Sounds), with good smart functionality and very good blu-Ray picture and sound given the price.

Depends how old your blu-Ray player is, but virtually all Sony players in the last 2-3 years have had smart functionality (including, I-player, YouTube and Netflix among other things). Worth digging out your player and checking.

Calling all Geeky Nerds, by darrenrapley on Oct 6, 2013 19:07:35 GMT 1, I have ATV 2 jailbroken with XBMC. 1channel is pretty good although not blu-ray quality. I agree with Baby Dave though - every 9 months or so I have to reset everything which is a slight pain so don't update the ATV too often

Calling all Geeky Nerds, by Baby Dave on Oct 7, 2013 17:54:54 GMT 1, The sect of eBay is the best place...for ease. Just hunt around and don't buy the first one you come across. Prices vary greatly despite them all being identical
