Just how big do you think JR will become? , by Deleted on Oct 25, 2013 15:39:02 GMT 1, Just wondering how big people here think JR will become in the future.
I'm not asking as I own some of his work and want to 'hype him up', I'm asking because he comes across as the busiest artist on the scene and is constantly showing his art in one show or another and seems to have lots of celebs who are more than happy for him to take their photo. His art has received critical acclaim and he seems to be loved by the critics wherever he goes.
On the flip side to this is that he rarely seems to sell out any prints. I know his prints are expensive but it still seems a bit strange that these aren't getting snapped up.
So, what're your opinions? Overpriced photos or future classics that people will think 'If only I'd bought these all those years ago' !!

Just how big do you think JR will become? , by Strange Al on Oct 25, 2013 16:00:43 GMT 1, For me JR is probably creating the most exciting work in the scene at the moment. I'm not saying he's the most innovative, or technically gifted artist or even that any of his individual photographs are particularly outstanding in the world of photography (although he does have a great eye). However, his projects are having a real social impact and inspiring people to create and to engage in debate. I used to be a little put off by his apparent cast of celebrity friends, but I have to admit he has totally won me over. I don't know him personally, but from what I've seen and read of him -- his creative drive and energy appears boundless and he seems like someone who truly wants to make the world a better place.
During the last month, whilst the forum has largely focused on Banksy's escapades in NYC, JR has (among other things): brought the Inside Out project to London and an exhibition to Laz; been working with the NYC ballet; and over the last few days been putting up work in Rikers Island prison. Save to mention the countless folks around the world currently participating in Inside Out. Just Inspiring!

Just how big do you think JR will become? , by Deleted on Oct 25, 2013 16:01:30 GMT 1, Yeah Wizzy I think you could be right there. I always think of his work as a 'slow burner' ie he won't be the best thing since sliced bread one day then forgotten the next like a few artists but he'll slowly get bigger and bigger.
Strangers Almanac - yes I also think he's one of t most inspiring people I've ever seen. I watched his TED speech and his enthusiasm is infectious. I was lucky enough to get to London for his Inside Out project and have my photo pasted on the pavement and his energy and enthusiasm was plain to see.

Just how big do you think JR will become? , by vinzc on Oct 25, 2013 16:05:43 GMT 1, I'm very much a fan of his work, his motivation, and ability to seemingly be everywhere at once.
In terms of collecting, generally, I am not a fan of the 'pictures of his picture/project' pieces. That could be because I already have a tremendous amount of pictures I have taken of his work, I don't know. Not sure if putting a stamp/signature on it makes it much more valuable to me. Some of them are quite pleasing aesthetically though (the LA face with the city coming from it sideways and the train/eyes pieces are incredible, IMO). But on the whole, I prefer to collect/hang images of pics he has taken (ie Hold Up).
As a photographer showing work in a couple shows/galleries,it's my experience that people don't really put much of a premium on "pictures" in general...it's a tougher sell these days with camera technology being what it is, and and images being so readily available on the web.
That's my two cents. I know that doesn't really answer your question, but it perhaps provides another perspective.
All in all, I've collected some of his work because I enjoy it, and at a minimum, hope it maintains it's existing value.

Just how big do you think JR will become? , by Strange Al on Oct 25, 2013 16:14:13 GMT 1, As for the prices of his prints, I think they're perfectly priced (much as I wish they were still affordable for the average buyer). The street scene is far too hung up on prints selling out immediately IMO and seems to equate this with a sign of success or longevity. I think it says more about the scene than the quality or longevity of the artist. By contrast to the street scene, I can name countless established and well respected contemporary artists whose prints remain available from their primary source years after release.
It seems to me that JR is consciously positioning himself closer to the traditional contemporary market, whilst of course not forgetting his street roots. I think that's a much safer option for an artist hoping to establish a long term career and I'm certain he'll be around long after many of the other artists currently discussed on this board are forgotten.

I certainly agree with you on this. I truly believe that JR will have a long long career and will continue to produce class pieces of work long after some of today's big artists are yesterday's news.
I always look forward to seeing what his next big project will be. Maybe a JR in space would be good : )

Just how big do you think JR will become? , by vinzc on Oct 25, 2013 17:14:49 GMT 1, it will be interesting to see where he goes from here in terms of artistic direction. perhaps it could be argued that the inside out project is coming close to running it's course or coming to fruition? could well be 6-12months out, but still. and i suggest that, to his credit, of course. JR's done an exceptional job getting the project in front of millions? of people worldwide, in many major cities. what's next?

Just how big do you think JR will become? , by nah on Oct 25, 2013 18:22:58 GMT 1, there are prints by richard prince, ed ruscha, damien hirst and so on still available at source. it means nothing. it's interesting that instant print sellouts have become such a make or break thing in the urban art and expressobeans world, but there's less emphasis put on whether or not gallery shows sell out. almost a complete opposite to the 'real' art world.
