DALeast π¨π³ Wuhan, China β’ Street Art β’ Based in Cape Town, by chaturz on Jun 14, 2013 9:18:24 GMT 1, It's all good. The whole thing turned into a mess and I was NOT happy about being at its epicenter. Either appease TONS of people that complained or just me. They're all good people. I'm not sour but a bit surprised at just how many people went bonkers and wrote pissy letters. Like I said though, congrats to all the winners and no hard feelings over here. I can see both sides of the argument here, that being said as far as I am aware bmerel made it clear in his twitter / instagram posts that he wasnt present and the Dal team chose to accept that. so on that basis I dont see why anyone needed to send angry emails. It all seems unnecessary. Sorry to hear you missed out

Dream print for me would be the piece below from the JLG show - love it!

Dal painted up 7 new walls in the Shoreditch / Brick Lane area and you had to find them and tweet or instagram a photo of each wall - the first 50 to do so gets an undisclosed 'prize' for their efforts.
The twist was that one of the walls was locked behind a door and only assessable when the door (and new show behind the door) opened a few weeks later (although some people managed to blag their way into it early!).

DALeast π¨π³ Wuhan, China β’ Street Art β’ Based in Cape Town, by pie on Jun 14, 2013 11:38:16 GMT 1, It begs the question: If the challenge had been held in Chicago and you ended up being the 51st person no thanks to a UK entrant, how would you feel/what would you do? I am sorry to hear you've been disqualified though, I know you're a big fan. Well said Sohohoho - at the end of the day, doesn't matter who sent angry letter/emails. I think they deserved to! Lots of people travel into London or ran around Shoreditch for a couple of day just to participate in the competition, it's completely unfair that this dude gets to sit at his computer and win. I have friends who went back to Wall4# numerous times just to try and complete the competition so I feel their pain - I don't feel sorry for whoever this Brian Merel chap is.
Also I think when he posted his pictures on twitter, he mentioned he's just posting them and not participating in the competition. It was only later found that he created an account - all pictures posted on twitter gets approved by a system anyway so I believe the officials were not aware in the beginning.

In fairness in your twitter posts you do mention that you're in Chicago so haven't physically visited so kudos for honesty yea, i wasnt about to go and be dishonest about it. i dont expect to be included at all but it was the only shot i had being over here in chicago. was not trying to take away from anyones efforts out in london. in my mind though, i've run a marathon and mentally snapped as many pics as possible...also got into an argument with a wild human on the tube. ah, the games the mind has the ability to play! I like Pie.

DALeast π¨π³ Wuhan, China β’ Street Art β’ Based in Cape Town, by 11 on Jun 14, 2013 12:43:08 GMT 1, So now Brian has been suitably vilified I trust the Competition Police have satisfied themselves that all other entrants have been fully vetted and tagged to ensure they have attended every single location in person - wouldn't want this to be seen as vindictive act against a regular contributor who was just trying to join in the fun - and maybe grab a freebie - at least he was decent enough to ask Dal and tell everyone on here what he had done.
Brian told us how he had written to Dal and the promoters - In my mind the only one that had any grievance would be #51 so why would so many more people take it upon themselves to get him struck off.
All just leaves a bad taste IMO

DALeast π¨π³ Wuhan, China β’ Street Art β’ Based in Cape Town, by Dr Plip on Jun 14, 2013 12:53:02 GMT 1, This was always going to be silly. The last Dal London print drop was a farce too.
It all got a touch bitter really.
These sorts of things are never going to be completely fair are they? Unless they hold the same contest in every country, it makes it a little difficult for fans around the world. Even if you're in the same country, it's not always possible to drop everything.
What seems to have made this fair (as far as the competition is concerned), was that Dal and the organisers said it was OK. That should have been the final word on the matter.
I see both sides, but once a decision was made, it should have been respected.
Perhaps the old #52 is firing off some emails right now....
I wonder if the prize will be a DalEast tote bag?

DALeast π¨π³ Wuhan, China β’ Street Art β’ Based in Cape Town, by aa on Jun 15, 2013 1:00:10 GMT 1, As someone stuck on 6 approved and 1 pending photo, I can only say that I too agree with 11's comments. Ultimately it's all about generating publicity and a bit of buzz around an act/artist. Free concert tickets giveaways always get fan clubs annoyed that the 'true' fans miss out. You win some, you lose some...

It does, but the cynic might say that this buys them nearly two months to mail something out for a competition that happened a month ago.

Better that than receiving a pile of old tosh he's rushed out to keep the winners sweet. I, at this stage remain optimistic and thankful. Would be nice to get a sneaky peak mind you, but good things come to those that wait.

DALeast π¨π³ Wuhan, China β’ Street Art β’ Based in Cape Town, by graffuturism on Jul 3, 2013 0:50:45 GMT 1, Ill copy and post the comment I made on the site here.
"I don't see the big deal. This wouldn't even be news if it wasnt a portrait being painted over. The pieces at the bottom I am sure are rotated regularly, why should a portrait be any different. Its not about the ephemeral nature of our artform that justifies this, it is the nature of legal walls and the hierarchy that has always existed. The rules so to say. A portrait doesn't have its own set of rules, and Daleast painted over another piece of art with a newer piece of art. One could argue which is better, but the old rules apply if you can burn it then do so. I think Daleast held his own on this mural. I am sure daleast wouldn't mind if this painting was painted over by another artist altogether who would be able to abide by the rules. If in fact another artist painted over this or the last portrait with substandard art then that is a different story. Like I said I dont see the outrage over this, this is something all writers live with painting legal walls lift or not."
