DALeast π¨π³ Wuhan, China β’ Street Art β’ Based in Cape Town, by Vandalog on Jul 4, 2013 23:37:11 GMT 1, Rom is Daleast manager... Do you have proof ? If francacirano is actually the real Fran Cacirano (and of course that's a big if), she might be a reliable person to ask. The bio on her blog says "I also write for some street art news blogβ¦ "
And this francacirano seems to probably be the real one, since the real Fran said this on Google+ about the post.
So I wouldn't call that proof, but I'd say that at the very least a SAN contributor was also under the impression that Rom manages DALeast.

If a blog is hyping an artist from a supposed neutral journalistic standpoint when in fact they manage him, then they deserve to get called out for that. Though I would still kind of expect a street art blog to post about artists they either liked personally or had some sort of financially beneficial arrangement with, be it "management" or receiving prints in kind etc.
It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to turn a passion into a profession, and I suppose these grey areas are just a bi-product of this. The pros outweigh the cons though. It's great to have a wealth of street art news and pics out there, and it's up to the individual to use their own judgement on the merits of the artist and the motives of the post/blog/blogger.

Might be naive but I'm amazed that graffiti artists have 'managers'. Another nail in the coffin. You'll be telling me next that they have riders in their contracts before they paint at a festival. Blue smarties only!

I'd be amazed too if graffiti artists had managers but we're not really talking about graffiti here, are we? More like globe trotting daylight muralists/street artists who haven't got time to arrange their own walls etc. as well as paint. Any excuse to bash the genre though I suppose.

DALeast π¨π³ Wuhan, China β’ Street Art β’ Based in Cape Town, by sal on Jul 5, 2013 18:32:40 GMT 1, My point is that Vandalog, myself, SAN, Arrested Motion and so forth should only be research not taken as actual fact. We have our relationships with certain artists, genres of art, cities, galleries, and so forth Its impossible not to be biased. Thanks for pointing that out Vandalog!
Im reading this wondering how come people can get this fired up over something so uncertain and so unclear.. I mean, it's not like we all agreed what the definition of "manager" is, right?!.. Also, do you think they have a professional, signed-up-contract kind of relation, or maybe they just found mutual interests in what they are doing?!.. And which one of those scenarios is actually a bad thing as long as you like the work that comes out, and you're enjoying seeing it on the street/your wall?!..
As many pointed out, it's obvious that there is a connection between Dal and SAN (hence the print releases), but "accusing" (if that is even possible), that SAN owner is Dal's manager, sounds like not much more than throwing a sensation bomb.. And I can't believe how many people hooked on that as it's important.. I can think of 10 other artists and "managers" like that right away..
Personally, I've been in touch with Dal few times, and I never got an impression that he has a manager, cause artists with real managers or representative galleries just dont talk about things Dal was openly talking about.. He certainly has people all over the world helping him find the walls, work out the logistics to paint them, etc.. Whether it's the guy from SAN or Jonathan Levine himself, it really doesn't bother me.. If I ever get a chance to have him paint in my home town, I'll gladly be his manager for those couple of days.. As Im sure many of you would..
Oh, and as for 'what makes you want to paint a particular wall or notβ the artist simply replied, βfateβ which sounds so much cooler than βmy manager picks my walls for meβ', doesn't this sound like Faith (his wife), IS his manager?!?

DALeast π¨π³ Wuhan, China β’ Street Art β’ Based in Cape Town, by Feral Things on Aug 15, 2013 13:25:55 GMT 1, You can always rely on the Daily Mail for some lazy and inaccurate journalist! Does DALeast actually travel the world tagging walls? I must confess I've never actually seen a DALeast tag on the streets or in photos online. Also, he's not exactly secretive is he? He seems to spent a fair amount of his time painting openly at organised events. It's absolutely not a criticism of DALeast but the Daily Mail seem to have arbitrarily applied two things they associate with graffiti in general (i.e. tagging and secrecy) and applied it to him. Given that it's the Daily Mail though perhaps we should just be glad they're not complaining he's taking painting opportunities away from 'good, honest British' writers.
