Do you really need to take a crap on multiple boards?
The money they will make on the print will be peanuts compared to the originals that will fly. The fact that his aftermarket is 3-4x the sales price of the print shows both the Gallery and Dal's sensitivity to offering a print at a very reasonable rate while protecting the value of his work with a run of 50.
If they were concerned about profit from the print, there would be 250 prints with multiple color ways, APs with hand finishing and all that jazz. You should know better being a gallery owner and all.

DALeast ๐จ๐ณ Wuhan, China โข Street Art โข Based in Cape Town, by sgolby on Aug 29, 2014 2:55:59 GMT 1, I generally love Dal's work. However, something about the image doesn't do it for me on this print.
I originally thought this was the print:
Now not so bummed not to be in town next week. I am stoked to get to see the show though since it is around the corner from my office, it will make for a perfect long lunch break!

I honestly don't see it as laziness at all. I see it as the most functional way to get detail without having him hand finish the print. I didn't like the Adrenaline release. I thought the quality of the print was actually terrible as were the proportions. Assassin is my favorite print by far.
I think this print looks great and folks will be pleasantly surprised with the detail when they see it in person. I think they made the right choice.
I have many Giclees from Welker and Choe that are incredible. I too prefer screen prints but I recognize the purpose of the Giclee and this was the right choice IMHO.

DALeast ๐จ๐ณ Wuhan, China โข Street Art โข Based in Cape Town, by Shoeless on Aug 29, 2014 4:40:44 GMT 1, Im with you on this one AFR1KA. It's not that I dislike giclees. I think they are the best option for some images. Harrington is a good example. The complexity of his work, with its combined colors and brushstrokes, makes a giclee the best way to present the image in print form. DAL had it right the first time with Assassin. A quality screenprint. Adrenaline was a bit off but not terribly enough to throw in the towel. I just don't understand the justification of a giclee for his work. Im not arguing "it was for more profit" or anything like that, but it does seem a bit lazy. Was it his call or the gallery?
I guess we shall wait and see how they are in person. Of course, the 50 people that end up with one will say "SO MUCH BETTER IN PERSON!!!!!"
****This post was not brought to you by hype or anti-hype. Just my humble opinion and critique of the artist. I am not interested in the image itself and will not attempt to buy one for my collection nor for profit.

Congrats again on the art hunt. Looked like an amazing event

DALeast ๐จ๐ณ Wuhan, China โข Street Art โข Based in Cape Town, by nrgball on Aug 29, 2014 15:55:20 GMT 1, Slightly larger image of the print
I get it that this work isn't everyone's cup of tea. Fair enough.
But look at that technique!! The depth that Dal achieves in the difference between the hind quarters and the front paws is down right masterful.
When you look at the koala canvas, it's terrible IMHO. Part of the reason it's terrible is because there is too much black and too much density. Also there is an immaturity in his style that shows his need to include too many un-intentional lines.
In this print, the precise opposite is true. Every line has a function and purpose. There is mastery and confidence in his line work. The areas of high density are organized and shaded with whites and Greys to make the image pop. His choices are very different and mark a maturity in his form.
Dal is at his best when he includes movement and content twists (like wheels on the feet) the develop the meaning and story of the image. I think this particular image lacks those elements so it isn't as strong as our favorite works. But this print marks an evolution in his creative mastery.
Mark it 8 dude

I thought dusk and dawn were great. At least they were a bit different to the previous releases, and the fact they were etchings really shows the skill the guy has.
I'm just wondering why the tea stained backgrounds all the time? I can't help thinking that his style of painting would look fantastic on a nice crisp clean white canvas.

Hopefully this will be a first, and I'm pretty sure that if I find a original that strikes me the right way, I might pick that up at the show as well.
I understand the hate for Glicee, but what can you do? If it's an artist and image you like... buy it. If Banksy came out with a Glicee print, we'd all line up to purchase.

Each line fits purposefully to generate a sharp, cohesive image. In works of his like the koala or the crashed car for instance, there are many purpose-less lines, therefore dis functional.

Their prints often utilize the weakest piece from the show and their have only been a handful of print release in the last several years that had any handwork (lister and Crash are the only ones that immediately come to mind).
With all this angst over the prints it is really going to go crazy in here when the preview goes out.

These works have a greater use of color, extend his standard subject matter, and are more intricate and realistic than previous works. Good job. I am most excited by his use of color. The pricing also isn't as bad as I thought it was with the most expensive piece at 7282 GBP I assume, before tax.
