Advice needed to preserve a work, by floubi on Dec 16, 2013 11:32:14 GMT 1, I have the opportunity to buy a work but I don't know how to preserve it. It's a spray work that has been done at the back of a carpet. There is a kind of "foam" at the back of carpets. The carpet is old so the foam goes away if you "scratch" it. Is there a way to stabilize it without "destroying" the work on it? Thank you for your help....

Advice needed to preserve a work, by iamzero on Dec 16, 2013 12:02:02 GMT 1, I am a carpet fitter/ floor layer by trade and think you may struggle dude. Over time the foam on the back of carpet disintegrates back to a powder as it dries out, domestic carpets changed to a felt backing over the last few years to avoid this problem.

Advice needed to preserve a work, by johnnyh on Dec 16, 2013 12:03:28 GMT 1, What's its guide value? What size is it Base is stick it in some sort of frame. That should protect it from being touched. Complete UV type box frame etc etc
You mention buy a work so ...is it that important a piece that makes it worth all the additional expense and hassle to preserve it?
Just some thoughts and questions a radical solution after reading above would be to have it set into a clear type resin.

Advice needed to preserve a work, by floubi on Dec 16, 2013 12:37:26 GMT 1, Thank you for all these answers.... the size is about 1,6x1m , kind of big! I would like to frame it with a complete UV type box frame (like you sais Johnnyh) but my fear is that the foam will go even if I do it.... As iamzero wrote, I really can worry as the foam will desintagrate no matter what I do.... I have the resin solution but would it damage the spray on it? thank you again!

Advice needed to preserve a work, by iamzero on Dec 16, 2013 12:41:13 GMT 1, The resin shouldn't damage it, I remember there is an artist in a thread on here somewhere that paints koi's and then sets them in a clear resin. Stunning if someone can find the link.

Advice needed to preserve a work, by iamzero on Dec 16, 2013 14:10:18 GMT 1, Whenever I've seen old foam backed stock in a warehouse it has started to dry out and crack even when unused. Do you have any images?

Advice needed to preserve a work, by DameHoracia on Dec 16, 2013 15:10:57 GMT 1, Resin can react really badly with different materials. If you are choosing to use it, test a piece of the foam first and a section where the spray paint is. Depending on the resin and materials you use it on it can make things tacky and will never dry.
If I were you I would get a professional to look at it.

Advice needed to preserve a work, by Happy Shopper on Dec 16, 2013 15:18:53 GMT 1, You might find a place that can vacuum pack it! Sounds silly, but it will hold it together and protect it from the air... and no resin or other chemicals to worry about.

Advice needed to preserve a work, by Cornish Crayon on Dec 16, 2013 15:45:46 GMT 1, Regardless of the piece and your love for it, are you happy to take the risk either way....... Not putting a dampener on things dude but cost Vs time (enjoyment in this case) if you don't get it right in preservation are you gonna kick yourself for buying it, or getting it wrong.......
Good luck on your quest buddy
No worries

Would it leave a shiny surface, thus taking away the reason and textured finish desired by the artist in the first place ?
Just saying

Just saying Yep, but perhaps preferable to it turning into dust or coating it in resin.
Another option could be the spray used for fixing charcoal/pastel drawings. Might hold it together!??

don't take it to a framer...
take it to a restorer - who will point you at the right restorer - then you can get the framer...involved.
no disrespect to framers... can't expect framers to know everything.. they don't and .. sadly some won't tell you that... (at that point i'll not add ..ho ho..)

Advice needed to preserve a work, by chads007 on Dec 18, 2013 15:12:27 GMT 1, Think you could vacuum seal it behind museum glass or something if the work is that precious & you want to store it in the vaults, take it to a restorer/conservator for professional advice
