Buying previously framed art, by Sundowner on Dec 21, 2013 19:02:30 GMT 1, If I'm purchasing something that was framed by someone else. Is there anything to watch out for? Such as adhesives or anything else. Dave, get the seller to remove it from the frame if at all possible. That way you can see if there have been any disastrous framing practices used (e.g. Dry mounting)......

Thank you sundowner I'm unfamiliar with framing, what is dry mounting? What are some other things to look out for, or is it mostly just adhesives? What kind of adhesives should be used?

A google search for 'dry mounting' will reveal what this involves.
Not all framers are the same. Most know that we, as consumers, are more interested in the finished item; not the process involved. Most framers based on the high street will probably be staffed by someone who has no idea about the process. They are there just to take orders.
As sundowner says, ask for it to be removed so you can see how it's been secured. Although you might noyt think it now, you may want to reframe it at some point, or sell it on. If it's been secured by a product that will not leave the work as bought then be careful. Or ask for a reduction on price if you still want to proceed.

Buying previously framed art, by Manty on Dec 21, 2013 20:46:34 GMT 1, If the edge of the print has been covered by a border the print may be darker than the edge when removed, sunlight does this to things, basically your print got a tan but the covered bits didn't
dry thing is where the framer glues the print to a back board, this is not a good thing apparently
Most prints are stuck to the backing board using adhesive strip, hopefully good framers use archival tape, which can be removed (by a framer or someone that knows what they are doing ) and the print will look like new
Other prints i have seen (mine) have been stuck down with packing tape this is not good and creates a little panic when viewed for the first time
Float mounted prints have to be removed very carefully as its pretty easy to leave a bit of the back of the print on the tape
What print is it you are looking to buy?
Sometimes the seller will know who framed the print, this can help with decision as there are a few good ones, but many bad bad bad ones

Its up to you of course
never stopped me
if you are buying because you like the image and want to look at it on the wall, then providing you are aware of what to look for then should be ok? if you are looking to put it on the wall, then you'll want it framed, cost around £200 average. if you do that when you go to sell it, guess what? it will be framed, and a buyer may come on here asking a similar question
if you want for investment, and to store under the bed, then agree, don't go the framed route.
I am rambling again, time to stop.
good luck with what ever you decide

Buying previously framed art, by dotdot on Dec 22, 2013 12:18:38 GMT 1, if you can - assess who framed it ? then how it was framed by them Some framers log what they've done for which work - i.e. some kind of a reference number.
inevitably buying something which is framed can be good in that it's been hung and enjoyed.. and bad in that it may not have been framed properly.. but as with unframed works.. checking how it has been maintained .. requires some careful questions.
most people use the same framer for most if not all of their work / you can always check if this is the same with your seller ..
good luck, btw..

Buying previously framed art, by iamzero on Dec 22, 2013 19:33:03 GMT 1, I'd still open it up if it states professionally framed, I've heard of and seen some bad practice even from people that have been framing for years. There's a great sale thread for an Eine Vandals on eBay that claims minor tape marks on rear and then the pictures show much more than that in my opinion. Buyer beware.

Depends on the hinge and how it's removed but can be done without leaving damage.
