OS Gemeos 🇧🇷 São Paulo Graffiti • Brazil Street Art, by Howard Johnson on May 18, 2016 20:06:32 GMT 1, Congrats to everyone that scored. Don't care for the image myself but then again I just dropped huge money on some abstract snoopy illustrations so I fully embrace the "to each there own" principle. For those who are complaining about the price, be happy for the artists who can command these prices. Its good for urban art overall, and in the smallest of ways it ups the cache of each of our collections.
Regarding the price, its kind of funny that people (myself included on occasion) complain about the price of artwork like artists should do us a favor and allow it to be accessible. You'd never complain about not being able to afford a BMW like the company has some sort of obligation to the consumer to make affordable products. Art is a luxury item. Only the rich will be able to afford blue chip artwork. Thats a simple principle we all seem to forget in this day and age of endless print releases.

OS Gemeos 🇧🇷 São Paulo Graffiti • Brazil Street Art, by Deleted on May 18, 2016 20:08:02 GMT 1, Makes me laugh everytime someone refers to them as the twins like they are mates with them. personally everytime says 'the twins' im reminded of a pair of boobs. "Os Gêmeos" is just "The Twins" in Portuguese. I find it easier to say in English than comically mispronouncing it in Portuguese. Thanks for clearing that up. you beat me to the post. Its always someone in the threads that brings bad energy to peaceful thread.

There are much safer places to put your money if you are looking to truly invest. its funny you say that because most not all collectors say they buy art as an investment. Im an artist and have been since i can remember. I live to paint I don't paint to live. many artist paint to live. A true artist will give you their work just for the appreciation of it. no matter how big his/her name is. I acquired a serious collection that way. My personal opinion buy what you like and try to establish a relationship with the artist you support. You acquire better and more original pieces that way. A real artist values his collectors more than he values his work. I agree with your assertion that many collectors buy for "investment" purposes, however misguided that may be, however, I do not agree with the fact that the mark of "true artist" is that they give their work away for free.
For me, a true artist is one who separates the creation process from the monetization process. They are driven to create and they do so, sometimes experimenting wildly, without a care as to the saleability of the end product.
If an artist feels strongly about their abilities within their chosen craft, they should value their time and commitment to their pursuit of expression.

If an artist feels strongly about their abilities within their chosen craft, they should value their time and commitment to their pursuit of expression. It may be situational bias, but the people I am close with, like me, buy for a different reason. Art is not an investment. If I was able to make back 1/2 of what I spent, but enjoyed the work while I had it, then thats more than I can hope for. I understand that other people see art as an investment, but its just never seemed enjoyable to me from that lens. I collect art because I love it. I am privileged to be able to do it and my only dream is to take all this work, build a museum around it and let other people enjoy these things, and learn about the movement that I love. If Im not going to sell it, why does the price ever really matter.
Cost of the work / number of days I reasonably have left on the planet / was it worth x to see it every day... then lets do it.
Once it gets up over $2K+ I start to add other variables, and I have a list of wants, but its never... well I believe the value will grow by x over the next period of time so ill buy it. Meh, seems shallow considering how important art is to me.

I value my artwork by the viewers appreciation of it. a true artist will continue to paint if he or she is homeless, broke, or sick and i've been all 3 the yet I still paint.

That's fine if you don't assign a monetary value to your work, but to me, that is the difference between a professional and an amateur.

Oh nice to see a humble artist. Lol. I'm not knocking you. If your a professional artist, making your artwork a financial success is pretty fundamental. Have to think about paying the mortgage some how.

That's fine if you don't assign a monetary value to your work, but to me, that is the difference between a professional and an amateur. Look at my artwork Im far from and amateur and just as good if not better than any print from any artist you may have on your wall im just saying. and became a professional when i sold my first piece. the difference between me and a lot of these other artist is Im not motivated by money nor is my work. We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one.

Oh nice to see a humble artist. Lol. I'm not knocking you. If your a professional artist, making your artwork a financial success is pretty fundamental. Have to think about paying the mortgage some how. money does not make you a professional artist. your work does and how you carry yourself as a person.

Say I fancied myself as an all star footballer playing in my backyard. Does that make me a professional footballer?

Would love to see their street art. I'm guessing there isn't much in Europe?

Van Gogh, Vermeer, Monet, Gauguin..never sold, died in poverty. Amateurs one and all?. I think this indoctrinated way of seeing the world through economics is the biggest challenge of our age, and should be the last thing considered when making or viewing art, listening to music, watching a play or reading a novel.

I never said amateur artists are inherently bad (although many are). There is plenty of amateur work that is brilliant that will never be appreciated at all on a grand scale.

From my experience, the "real" artists, the ones that truly dig deep to say something meaningful about themselves, the world and the topics they explore, rarely if ever, consider or assign monetary value to their work. Others generally do this, gallerists, collectors etc, but rarely if ever the artist. A lot of Urban artists on the other hand...
