Benefits street, by curiousgeorge on Jan 28, 2014 23:09:38 GMT 1, Can't avoid discussions about this show on the forums I visit.Opened my eyes a lot to the power of the media(again!)
Left wing? Right wing? Let's here those thoughts…
Surprise surprise I think the majority of those on the show have had the pi55 taken out of them by channel 4

Benefits street, by Manty on Jan 28, 2014 23:17:28 GMT 1, I just feel sorry for them, Very much let down by the previous owners of Great Britain.
Would be good if Channel 4 could do a similar program on the sale of the Royal mail and how much was made by so few for f**k all when it was literally given away. Billions of pounds for the 'in' crowd.
wankers all of them

The present government are like playground bullies - picking on the weak.

Benefits street, by Deleted on Jan 29, 2014 8:57:51 GMT 1, So the general feeling would be that these people on that show behave the way they do because the government are at fault? No. Let me explain it carefully and slowly for you.
I am saying that the system is broken; not just the benefits system, but the market that allows those with power and wealth to accumulate more at the expense of those less fortunate. Now we can argue long and hard about whose responsibility that is, but the ones that can do most about this are Governments. They set the agenda.
And yet, as we are seeing, Governments are increasingly absolving themselves of responsibility, instead preferring to blame the individual and push things into the free market.
If those with power and influence - bankers, politicians, business leaders - cannot conduct themselves with any sense of decency then how do they expect those who's life is a constant struggle to not try and take what they can on occasions.
Why are television stations, and companies not attacking the landlord that rents out substandard property and takes huge profits from Housing Benefit? If this system is wrong then why do we attack the vulnerable?
You can't tell me that some of those residents are milking the system to enjoy an easy life. Now, landlords....that's another matter; but we won't see that programme.
Politicians ( of all persuasions ) are so far removed from the real world it's frightening. While I have no religion, it's interesting that the only ones who are saying the 'right' things at the moment are the church leaders.

Cheers for not biting back.

Benefits street, by iamzero on Jan 29, 2014 10:47:17 GMT 1, No worries dude, the Hancock picture can go a long way in diffusing a situation... Genius of a man.
I would imagine that Benefit Street has the potential to divide opinion. Fact is that politicians are out of touch but there are also a lot of lazy people out there too.
I think there are many people on both sides of the divide that need locking in the naughty porch.

Benefits street, by Coach on Jan 29, 2014 11:03:03 GMT 1, I listened to a piece about this on radio 4 the other day. They reported that the residents are not happy with their portrial by the programme makers. They also said that people on that street who work had been involved with the filming but left out if the final programme. Someone from the production company was interviewed and said that this was because a decision had been made to reduce the number of programmes. Make if that what you will.
I have watched a little of the programme. The one thing that struck me was ghat the residents of that street (and many like it I imagine) could teach a lot of people a thing or two about community spirit.
