Art above a Radiator? • Humidity • Condensation , by Poppy Sunshine on Jul 10, 2008 8:23:16 GMT 1, Take everything out of it's frame, place all the prints in a portfolio or plan chest where there is no light, no damp, and nothing that will eat them. Then lock the drawers and never open them again. Oh, and don't forget to open all the windows, switch off the central heating and draw the curtains in case. Alternatively, I can offer a storage service which you can subscribe to monthly. I'll pick up your art for free and you can call me whenever you like and I will describe any of the pictures to you so you can imagine how well they are doing.

Art above a Radiator? • Humidity • Condensation , by hlarmy on Oct 19, 2008 20:07:03 GMT 1, A bit of advice please
What is the situation with hanging framed prints and paintings above a radiator (which is not particularly hot at the best of times).
The print is framed to museum standards and is currently hung about 18inches above the radiator. Is this likely to damage either the frame or the print inside?
Also, is it a bad idea to hang a painting above a radiator.
Cheers

Art above a Radiator? • Humidity • Condensation , by weaver on Oct 19, 2008 20:24:36 GMT 1, Various modes of thought on this, depending on if its a convection heater or a normal radiator, usual temp of the radiator, humidity in the house etc....
Convection heaters are the worst as the heat the air with elements inside the heater which then rises and can bake the print, drying out the paper and pigments, similar to having a hair drier on constantly. A normal radiator is not so bad as it radiates heat out over a larger area / lower heat, so wont dry the print so much. Either way the hotter the heater, the worse it is. If the room is damp / humid, the damp can start mould when warmed up / trapped moisture inside the frame.
Right thats the scare tactics out the way, generally it is advised against as not being too good for prints, modern papers and pigments are generally designed for a household environment and shouldn't suffer any adverse reaction to being hung above a normal heater ( over a blast furnace might not be advisable, but a constant output radiator should be fine).
I have a couple of pieces hung close to radiators and have done for several years with no adverse reactions, if possible try to maintain a fairly steady temp rather than constant heat / chill cycles.
I wouldn't hang a painting above a radiator.

Art above a Radiator? • Humidity • Condensation , by hlarmy on Oct 19, 2008 20:43:18 GMT 1, Cheers Weaver, great advice
It is a traditional heater so I think it should be ok - to cut a long story short I gave the print (which is rather valuable!) to my parents to hang. They have recently re-decorated and then hung it above the radiator and, in doing so, put two large holes in their new wallpaper (hence their reluctance to move it!).
Keep the comments coming; I'm sure a thread like this will come in use to others in the future.

I have a few over rads, and yet to see any ill effect over a period of 4 years, though I am not too fussed as they are only warhols, and a few banksys :-)

Art above a Radiator? • Humidity • Condensation , by Cardiff on Mar 27, 2011 0:29:13 GMT 1, We're doing some remodeling in our living room replacing an older gas fireplace with a linear model. It's going to create a great focal point for a special piece of art, but I've read tons of cautionary warnings about hanging art near fireplaces/radiators. I live in SoCal, USA where the temperature doesn't fluctuate too much year round, but we do use our fireplace all the time. My questions are...
1. Has anyone used any design ideas to minimize the temperature changes over the fireplace?
2. Are there any mediums that are less susceptible to damage given the temperature variations (works on metal, etc.)?
I've drooled over tons of pics of amazing art hanging over fireplaces on this forum...just curious to see if anyone has suggestions/thoughts of how to do this w/out damaging the art.
Thanks!

Art above a Radiator? • Humidity • Condensation , by skitchy on May 11, 2011 12:38:45 GMT 1, Really quick question please delete if this if its in the wrong section just want a quick answer.
As the the subject suggests I am running out of wall space, is it ok to hang prints above radiators? obviously right now in the summer its not a problem but I'm terrified in the winter the prints will ripple with heat belting out at full blast
Anyone have experience in this field?
much appreciated

Art above a Radiator? • Humidity • Condensation , by Deux Spin on Nov 25, 2011 8:46:37 GMT 1, Good morning all,
I recently received back my framed work from Mr Frameman. He did an absolutely amazing job, and I plan to post some photos once hung. In the mean time, I'd like some advice on hanging above radiators. I have 2 large radiators, one in my living room and one in the hallway which I'd love to put art above. I'm concerned about the change in temperature affecting that art, and wondering what you've done to get around this? I have been advised to keep the temperature low, and put mounted pieces, if any above the radiator. Would a radiator cabinet solve the solution? I've read that they diffuse the heat outwards rather than above. All advice welcome.

If it's an orig canvass be careful but your average print will be fine. No real damage will br done and you will enjoy it.

Art above a Radiator? • Humidity • Condensation , by Deux Spin on Nov 25, 2011 9:40:56 GMT 1, Thanks Johnny! I agree, I'll spare my BAST OG.
How about an Invader Rubik Cubism, its an original Dalai Lama, 83.5 x 83.5cm made from cubes. I was thinking of putting it about 50cm above a radiator. Its not paint, but worried the adhesive on the plastic stickers might fall off - and unsure whats holding all the cubes together? I think Invader drilled them together, as its very sturdy.
