Art above a Radiator? • Humidity • Condensation , by Mister Frame Man on Apr 6, 2012 14:15:52 GMT 1, Perhaps remove the tape from the back and and loosen the pins.
Place in a room which has stable temperature (no moisture).
The moisture must be coming from somehere? Shower? Damp wall?

Art above a Radiator? • Humidity • Condensation , by xmyart on Apr 6, 2012 14:16:24 GMT 1, Nope definatly not from the shower. All i can think is it was hung on a wall that it turns out gets quite cold for some reason. But thats the only thing i can think of. Not sure why that ould cause condensation though.
Looks like its going to be expensive whatever way! No way to avoid stripping it then george?

Can't see a framer charging more than £10 to put it back tape and pin once you know where the damp is coming from. Is it on an internal or external wall?

Art above a Radiator? • Humidity • Condensation , by xmyart on Apr 6, 2012 14:40:04 GMT 1, Yeah funny you say that. Turns out to be backed on to the flat next door for 3/4 of it then god dam external where the print was hanging :-(
Had telephone diagnosis with MFM and have taken the tape off the back in the hope it will release the moisture, so will see in a few hours.
Cheers for the help all.
And top service MFM didnt think youd even be around!

Art above a Radiator? • Humidity • Condensation , by mrtee on Apr 6, 2012 16:32:58 GMT 1, Sounds to me like you have a high relative humidity (RH) in your place. The humid air condensates on the glass because it meets the dew point. The cold wall also cools the glass. Dew point is the temperature at which air reaches saturation moisture content and moisture condenses.
You could try to improve the ventilation, turn up the heat. That makes the RH lower. Put some spacers between the wall and the frame, that would make glass warmer.

Condensation is now all gone from the glass and the slight rippling looks to be just settling back. Thankfully ll it took was to remove the tape from the back of the frame and let the moisture escape. McFucking Phew!!!

I remember the flap on i had when i left the faile against the radiator and later turning the heating on and forgetting all about it...oh dear! Luckily i caught it just in time and its fine now..a close one though.

Art above a Radiator? • Humidity • Condensation , by xmyart on Apr 9, 2012 22:27:01 GMT 1, Good news is that i tink i got this just at the right time as well. Its got rid of all the condensation and the ripples are nearly gone as well. By the looks of it i could get away with it too. Thanks to some MFM help it didnt involve taking it out of the frame. Would have done it if i didnt get advice but glad i didnt have too.

Art above a Radiator? • Humidity • Condensation , by Deleted on May 19, 2013 22:55:25 GMT 1, Hi,
Just looking at a few old threads on hanging art over radiators and radiator covers have been mentioned as something that can help protect it.
Has anyone else here used these? Do they help to protect pictures hanging above them? I'm really running out of wall space and there's a prime location in my bedroom.....right above a radiator!!

Art above a Radiator? • Humidity • Condensation , by Feral Things on May 20, 2013 18:55:29 GMT 1, I shouldn't imagine that radiator covers would offer any protection to art work hung above the radiators. They're designed to allow the heat to still radiate out and their purpose is purely aesthetic.
I'm sure this will provoke some angry reactions, but I have canvases hung over radiators. I would be far more cautious with works on paper but paintings have been hung over fireplaces for centuries and it doesn't seem to have dulled their owner's enjoyment of the art.

Art above a Radiator? • Humidity • Condensation , by Deleted on May 20, 2013 20:24:08 GMT 1, Blimey I'd be too scared to hang a canvas over a radiator. I've looked at covers online and they seem to stop the air coming out of the top of the radiator so I thought they could be quite useful in that aspect.

Art above a Radiator? • Humidity • Condensation , by Deleted on May 21, 2013 11:08:36 GMT 1, Hi,
Ok I guess this is a continuation if my last thread but I was wondering what people thought of me trying this out. My prefab Heist has been sprayed on to steel and i wondered if it would be ok over a radiator as obviously it's a lot tougher and more sturdy than a print and there's no paper to crease up.
Has anyone else done this kind of thing?

Art above a Radiator? • Humidity • Condensation , by Feral Things on May 21, 2013 11:30:26 GMT 1, Sorry, me again. I would probably be a little wary of hanging a piece which is spray paint on metal over a radiator because spray paint is quite 'lean' (i.e. inflexible) compared with, say, oil paint which is more 'fat' (i.e. flexible) consequently it would be less tolerant to the surface expanding and contracting due to changes in temperature. I would also imagine that metal would expand and contract more that other surfaces.
The above is based more upon the theory of how surfaces and mediums react rather than personal experience of this scenario, so I may be way off track here and at the end of the day I always think its better that a piece is up on a wall being enjoyed than safely stowed away out of sight.

Art above a Radiator? • Humidity • Condensation , by Feral Things on May 28, 2013 13:32:02 GMT 1, Really sorry to see this. Last night I rehung the first Banksy I got back in 2002 and having seen your photo I'm now going to double check the screw in the wall and cord on the back.
He's based in London rather than Birmingham but Graham Bignell seems to do excellent restoration work (albeit not always particularly punctually). Good luck!
