Banksy 'Sperm Alarm' Thief strikes again..., by randomname on Mar 2, 2014 23:01:54 GMT 1, The point is the court valued that property at ยฃ17,000, not at the value of the sprinkler alarm and the panel it was attached to. The judge, Mr Recorder Peter Lodder QC handed Lawrence a suspended sentence and said: โYou were convicted by the jury of attempting to convert or transfer criminal property.
โThat criminal property was a section of wall which bore a Banksy work of graffiti art which you attempted to sell for ยฃ17,000.
โI bear in mind that value, I also bear in mind that the section of wall was stolen on February 11, 2011, and found on your computer was a photo showing you had possession of that artwork by just before 2pm the next day.The court, or the judge, were only "bearing in mind" the value at which he was attempting to sell property stolen from the Hesperia hotel. The case brought by the Crown Prosecution Service was against private property belonging to and stolen from the Hesperia hotel. The court used that value when determining his sentence. If he had stolen a regular alarm bell worth $100 and put it on ebay for ยฃ17,000, he wouldn't have received anywhere near as harsh of sentence. Most likely, he would not have even been prosecuted, as it wouldn't be worth the court's time. No matter how you play with semantics, the court valued the property at ยฃ17,000.

Banksy 'Sperm Alarm' Thief strikes again..., by born2sk8 on Mar 2, 2014 23:21:34 GMT 1, Are legal system is bent and corrupt because of rich and power hungry people no doubt. Mr Lawrence here is simply being made an example of because of the value he tried to sell this stolen piece for. If this was on public property this wouldn't of happened because clearly you couldn't class this as handling stolen goods unless there was someone to of stolen it from. He's clearly just a thief and a stupid one at that, this is nothing to do with skin colour or class. He should have been charged with a crime. He even should have been charged with stealing something valuable. But what he stole of value, he stole from the public, not a private company. In the same vein, rich gallery owners should probably be charged with possession of stolen property when they remove a piece of street art that was intended for the public.ย There's a movement towards treating street art as part of our cultural heritage to prevent individuals from claiming it as their own. There's a moral and legal argument to be made there.ย What's also interesting is that the idea of graffiti holding intrinsic value is relatively new. In the eyes of the law, it's considered vandalism. Which is why insurance companies won't pay on a claim if you report vandalism of your vandalism. And it's why raggers aren't arrested and prosecuted for anything other than simple vandalism.ย So it seems odd that in this one particular case, he was prosecuted based on the value of the art. Lower income individuals face higher prosecution rates and receive harsher penalties than wealthier individuals when charged with the same crime. Likewise, racial minorities are prosecuted more often and receive harsher sentences when charged with the same crime. In this case, he was treated differently than every other case I've seen of street art theft or vandalism. That might be coincidental. Or it might not.
I totally see where ur coming from random and you do make a very good point that any stolen street piece is theft to the public. I think the issue here is that this guy was asking to be made an example of, especially for so blatantly selling on eBay at that price, he introduced the value into the case.
I don't think u can say he was treated differently with such a specific case as this one. And I completely agree that lower income classes are target to higher prosecution rates and harsher penalties, its usually down to the power that money can have in our legal system.
As for racial discrimination in law I believe that's more down to media driven propaganda, in reality a lot of laws are created to pray on people with the least in this world, black, white, whoever.

Banksy 'Sperm Alarm' Thief strikes again..., by sohohoho on Mar 2, 2014 23:33:12 GMT 1, Sorry randomname but your initial post was ridiculous. He damaged and stole off private property then got caught, convicted and sentenced based on this crime AND previous other crimes. The hotel probably wouldn't have brought a case against him if he hadn't a) valued it so high and b) advertised it publicly, especially so soon. Basically, he's a dumb thief. Backed up by the fact that he walked out of PE's gallery with a Bast print rolled up under his coat thinking he could get away with it.

Yep. To imply he's almost a victim of a racist system is just stupid and an ignorant thing to say. I don't care if he's white, black or purple - he's a stupid lowlife thief who stole something and - don't forget - tried to treat us all like mugs by selling his stolen goods to us.
I'd say he got off very lightly given his past crimes too.

I won't hold my breath.
A good mate of mine is a Police Officer and he's learnt to not have too much faith in the justice system.

Banksy 'Sperm Alarm' Thief strikes again..., by Deleted on Mar 3, 2014 0:14:11 GMT 1, hi this is leon lawrence
to address pure evil.
i didn't try and steal anything from pure evil gallery and he has any cctv cameras he'll see that he has the wrong black guy.
he never chased me or did i ever conceil anything under my jacket, he saw me around the corner while i was out shopping and accused me, i have called him to tell him this but he didn't accept what i told him.
Iโve had a lot of bad stigma from this banksy thing and Iโve done my best to redeem myself.i actually know pure evil and i have given a number of donations to charity actions such as the Robbo charity auction in 2011 and other causes since i also know a lot of forum members who Iโve bought art from . The banksy this was years ago. i now collect art that Iโve paid for.
Sperm alarm
i know for a fact a lot of the people on this forum have street pieces of art in their house, the hypocracy over it is crazy.
i had the chance to take the sperm alarm and i took it. if i didnt i gaurentee you someone else would have.
paying the hotel to let me remove it would have been ok?? they didn't pay banksy to produce the piece nor would they give the artist any profits.

Banksy 'Sperm Alarm' Thief strikes again..., by randomname on Mar 3, 2014 0:16:57 GMT 1, He should have been charged with a crime. He even should have been charged with stealing something valuable. The point on value is this is the first case I've seen in the U.S. or England where a court has considered the market value of graffiti when prosecuting someone for theft or vandalism. The judge clearly stated that value was a factor in determining his sentence. The reason behind that discrepancy is up for debate.
As for racial discrimination in law, I believe it's very much real.
Black people are six times more likely to be arrested than white people for drug offences and 11 times more likely to be imprisoned, according to new research claiming to show the racial bias of the criminal justice system.
Professor Alex Stevens, of the school of social policy, sociology and social research at the University of Kent, said his analysis of recent Ministry of Justice data highlighted disturbing trends. He said: "The disparity in arrest and imprisonment rates for drug offences between white and black people in England and Wales is even greater than has been calculated for the US."
His analysis, contained in his new book Drugs, Crime and Public Health, found that fewer than two in 1,000 white people were arrested for drug offences in 2007 to 2008, compared with more than 10 in 1,000 black people. In terms of imprisonment, the rates varied from 0.1 in 1,000 white people to 1.1 in 1,000 black people, meaning that black people in England and Wales are 6.1 times more likely to be arrested and 11.4 times more likely to be jailed. for drug offences than white people. Black people were also 9.2 times more likely to be stopped and searched for drug offences.
Stewart added: "This differential enforcement of drug laws contributes substantially to the over-representation of black people in prison in England and Wales." He said around a quarter of the people serving sentences for drug offences were of African or Caribbean origin, although only 2.2% of the population aged over 10 are categorised as belonging to that ethnic group. The research found that Asian people were two times more likely to be arrested and 3.1 times more likely to be imprisoned than white people for drug offences.
Explaining the "apparent discrimination" by attributing higher levels of drug taking between ethnic groups was wrong, Stewart said, referring to research from the British Crime Survey that suggested black people are no more likely than white people to report using illicit drugs, and that black people have a lower rate of use of class A substances.
www.theguardian.com/society/2010/oct/31/race-bias-drug-arrests-claim
That said, the main point is that wealthy gallery owners are committing essentially the same offense. Stealing artwork intended for public display for their own personal gain. But that our legal systems currently condones that theft.

Banksy 'Sperm Alarm' Thief strikes again..., by Invaded 420 on Mar 3, 2014 0:24:38 GMT 1, hi this is leon lawrence to address pure evil. i didn't try and steal anything from pure evil gallery and he has any cctv cameras he'll see that he has the wrong black guy. he never chased me or did i ever conceil anything under my jacket, he saw me around the corner while i was out shopping and accused me, i have called him to tell him this but he didn't accept what i told him. Sperm alarm i know for a fact a lot of the people on this forum have street pieces of art in their house, the hypocracy over it is crazy. i had the chance to take the sperm alarm and i took it. if i didnt i gaurentee you someone else would have. paying the hotel to let me remove it would have been ok?? they didn't pay banksy to produce the piece nor would they give the artist any profits. Didn't you say you knew him in the first post an that he was in brighton that night. Now you claim to be him sayin you were coincidently just around the corner from the theft. None of my business I know but when it's posted on a public forum it's hard to ignore. Just my 2 cents

Just ignore him mate. He's probably just someone who's bored and trolling.
If I'm wrong and this is the real guy then he can just f*** off as we're not interested in hearing his cr*p.
Despite the one lone voice on this thread implying that he was only prosecuted because of his skin colour the rest of us are not that stupid to believe that and aren't interested in his pathetic excuses.

Banksy 'Sperm Alarm' Thief strikes again..., by born2sk8 on Mar 3, 2014 0:44:17 GMT 1, I totally see where ur coming from random and you do make a very good point that any stolen street piece is theft to the public. The point on value is this is the first case I've seen in the U.S. or England where a court has considered the market value of graffiti when prosecuting someone for theft or vandalism. The judge clearly stated that value was a factor in determining his sentence. The reason behind that discrepancy is up for debate. As for racial discrimination in law, I believe it's very much real.ย Black people are six times more likely to be arrested than white people for drug offences and 11 times more likely to be imprisoned, according to new research claiming to show the racial bias of the criminal justice system.
Explaining the "apparent discrimination" by attributing higher levels of drug taking between ethnic groups was wrong, Stewart said, referring to research from the British Crime Survey that suggested black people are no more likely than white people to report using illicit drugs, and that black people have a lower rate of use of class A substances.www.theguardian.com/society/2010/oct/31/race-bias-drug-arrests-claimThat said, the main point is that wealthy gallery owners are committing essentially the same offense. Stealing artwork intended for public display for their own personal gain. But that our legal systems currently condones that theft.ย
This is getting quite off topic but, I didn't say that the racial discrimination in law isn't real I said that its spun by the media. If you listen to the news in the USA you can guarantee that at least once you'll probably hear about some 6ft tall black guy committed of god knows wot.
This sort of thing echoes in the minds of society including the people put in charge of policing it. It's also true that especially in the case of drug laws as your mentioning, that the laws for particular drugs were created in the first place to single out certain ethnicities.
Many of which were perfectly legal before it became associated with a certain race.
Personally I believe your first point about harsher punishment for lower income individuals is the new type of discrimination in the legal system that effects all races. If you live in certain parts of the US you have very little choice but to enter the only industry that operates there, which very often is drugs.

Banksy 'Sperm Alarm' Thief strikes again..., by randomname on Mar 3, 2014 1:20:31 GMT 1, The point on value is this is the first case I've seen in the U.S. or England where a court has considered the market value of graffiti when prosecuting someone for theft or vandalism. I think we both agree that the legal system is terribly skewed against minorities and the poor. I personally think this case was handled a little differently in that I've never seen a case where the market value of graffiti was considered in the prosecution and sentencing.
But that's not the main point of my comment. It's that both this guy and gallery owners are stealing public works of art. It becomes an interesting debate whether a building owner also owns the art when it was intended as a gift to the public. My opinion is that they don't and that we need to do more to protect street art as part of our cultural heritage.

Banksy 'Sperm Alarm' Thief strikes again..., by randomname on Mar 3, 2014 1:23:50 GMT 1, Just ignore him mate. Calm down doc.. Why so much hate?? I haven't done medicine to be able to diagnose a certain level of anger in your posts.. Chill doc Best to ignore him. He's a bit of a troll.

Banksy 'Sperm Alarm' Thief strikes again..., by born2sk8 on Mar 3, 2014 1:53:14 GMT 1, This is getting quite off topic but, I didn't say that the racial discrimination in law isn't real I said that its spun by the media. It's gone completely off topic. Ironically, we probably agree on more than we disagree.ย I think we both agree that the legal system is terribly skewed against minorities and the poor. I personally think this case was handled a little differently in that I've never seen a case where the market value of graffiti was considered in the prosecution and sentencing.ย But that's not the main point of my comment. It's that both this guy and gallery owners are stealing public works of art. It becomes an interesting debate whether a building owner also owns the art when it was intended as a gift to the public. My opinion is that they don't and that we need to do more to protect street art as part of our cultural heritage.ย
Yes i think your right and personally I want to help protect street art so it can be seen by everyone too. I'm glad that's now what your main point is because that's now how you've made it seem with your previous comments. Like I said before and others, the only reason the value was brought in to it was because of the public and obvious nature in which he did this.

Banksy 'Sperm Alarm' Thief strikes again..., by Deleted on Mar 3, 2014 5:35:29 GMT 1, Calm down doc.. Why so much hate?? I haven't done medicine to be able to diagnose a certain level of anger in your posts.. Chill doc Best to ignore him. He's a bit of a troll.ย
Says the man who made rape jokes on the WCP thread which got deleted by the mods.
You're a classy guy eh.
It seems every time someone doesn't agree with your point of view you brand them a troll. I guess that makes us all trolls as nobody else agrees with the ridiculous statement you made early on here.
Now please stick to the topic and stop the abuse.

Banksy 'Sperm Alarm' Thief strikes again..., by Deleted on Mar 3, 2014 6:03:28 GMT 1, And back on topic.......
I think that Leon Lawrence has been very lucky to escape a much harsher penalty for his crimes.
He should maybe take this as sign that he should quit while he's ahead (ie he's still free!) and not try to come on here telling us how PE has it all wrong - if indeed that was him - and should just keep his head down, try not to steal anything else and redeem himself.

We can revisit your last trolling attempt if you like. I didn't make a joke about rape, I made an analogy. The point of that analogy was that someone had said if you don't like a crime, just ignore it. The analogy I made was to show the absurdity of that.
During your last trolling attempt was when I shared your most egregious trolling attempt so far. When you wrote to a London charity using my e-mail address, wasting their time. I still have it if you'd like me to post it again. Incidentally, I shared it with the owner of this site and he informed me that you have a history of such behavior.
I was Pm'd by another member who said you pulled the same stunt with him, using his email on neo-nazi sites. So if you want to talk about class, by all means let's talk about class.
