requesting a COA?, by 4frnt on Mar 10, 2014 1:55:03 GMT 1, I bought a piece directly from an Artist -- a signed 1/1 print but with no COA. I plan to hang it but would it be problematic down the road if I try to sell it? Would it be okay to email the artist and request a COA?
Thanks

requesting a COA?, by minibear on Mar 10, 2014 2:41:32 GMT 1, I'd say email trail and invoice should be good enough. COA's aren't a requisite, I've got a dface that was bought from source and doesn't have a coa for example.

Absolutely a common request but possibly check to see if this artist does issue COAs. Many don't and you could would use the payment receipt or invoice as provenance.

Lots of my pieces don't have a coa. A coa is just one form of prov. indeed, apart from PC ones which have serial numbers, coas are not that great as prov. If a forger can forge a painting or print, they can surely manage to forge a coa. It is much more important that you have prov in the form of proof of purchase. Emails, website payment confirmation etc. Coas are nice, but not the be all and end all (apart from banksy's). Imho.

Interesting. Is this for all of his works, irrespective of who published them (stolenspace, pow, etc)? How do you contact him for COAs?

requesting a COA?, by rmouse on Mar 11, 2014 1:41:43 GMT 1, Works that can't be traced back with evidence to the primary dealers or artist directly are troublesome. They even made a movie about an alleged Jackson Pollock called 'Who the #$&% is Jackson Pollock?' where a woman claimed a painting she bought for 5 bucks was a long lost Pollock, but without provenance she had a hell of a time proving it.
The primary dealers carry extraordinary weight because they establish the authenticity through being the primary commercial outlet of a work. If the artist gives it to you directly, you need something written on paper or alternatively be their lover or mom or dad or something equally #trustworthy that can't be questioned later on.

hi, contact beth at stolen space she'll sort it out quick and easy.
dface will give COA on anything but guess it needs to be worth it as £100 isn't cheap.
I wouldn't waste my money getting COA on a dface print, but for a canvas a COA is good to have.

Cheers. Useful to know.
As you say, at £100 a pop the work needs to have significant value to warrant forking out for a COA.

Loved that documentary. The woman who bought the painting is one hell of a character! The painting's whereabouts prior to being found in a thrift store were unknown. And in spite of all the forensic evidence proving the painting was created in Pollock's studio (paint samples from the floor, pots and whatnot, pollen, etc) they just wouldn't acknowledge that it was an original Pollock.

requesting a COA?, by opalis141 on Apr 16, 2014 18:46:53 GMT 1, This is really interesting. What if you weren't issued a receipt but do have a history of the transaction on your credit card bill and the artist/issuing gallery doesn't provide a COA. Is this sufficient or should extra documentation be requested?

requesting a COA?, by Manty on Apr 16, 2014 19:09:10 GMT 1, I dunno
Its a depends question
So many factors
too many to think of right now, but there are lots
many many
heres one though, just a quicky.
I wouldn't bother unless the artist hits the big time, then with my proof of purchase I would get one.
Bit similar to the Banksy thing. His prints used to be bought and sold on receipts and a nod from Dora of POW fame. Then the prints went up in value, then got copied, people got stitched up, others went to jail, many were out of pocket and the world sighed at how wicked these forger people were.
So Banksys Logistics Director (Jim) set up Pest control, and we all (except me because I can't be arsed) went and got Pest control COAs.
So yes/no/ maybe is my recommendation
