# WithSyria, by Coach on Jul 29, 2016 21:36:02 GMT 1, The only maternity hospital in the Idlib province has been bombed today and Aleppo is under siege with food and medical supplies almost exhausted.ย I can't imagine what these poor, innocent people are going through.
It is just so appalling. Just yesterday I listened to this incredibly brave American doctor talking on the radio. The extract is now on the bbc news.
www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-36905131
He references Dr Nott, a British doctor in Syria. I heard him interviewed on radio 4's PM programme a while ago, and found what he had to say, in his calm soothing voice, so moving. It has stuck with me ever since and I think about it often. Interview here:

This is the page regarding his fund raising on the Syria Relief website

I am an American surgeon who recently spent two weeks working in an underground hospital in eastern Aleppo, Syria. I have been there a few times, and each time I go, I descend into lower depths of hell. What I witnessed in two weeks is a fraction of what Syrians endure on a daily basis.
There are innocent people dying all over Syria but in Aleppo massacres occur almost daily. Russian and regime helicopters and jets drop bombs on civilians, homes, schools, markets, and hospitals. Such airpower has wreaked havoc and a disproportionate amount of death, destruction, and displacement.
Whereas I get to go home, the medics and rescue workers I met risk their lives daily. The White Helmets are also there. Their base was just a few blocks away from the hospital. But there are so few of them left. Aleppo is their home, and they will not abandon their communities.
The hospital where we worked operates out of a basement and is fortified like a bunker with barrels and sandbags on the outside. It has been hit by airstrikes so many times that no one dares to use the top floors. No hospital should have to be built this way. The month of July saw 43 attacks on hospitals in Syria -- thatโs one every 17 hours.
The hospital after an airstrike would be overrun with patients trying to seek care through the front door. Side to side on the same bed. Lying on floors smeared with blood. Crushed skulls. Dismembered bodies. Mangled limbs. Dead children wrapped in thin white shrouds then taken to be buried. Shock and horror becomes the daily routine, and you just have to accept it. We canโt save everyone. Thereโs very little help, very little medicine, and very little blood to transfuse. And you make decisions to save one at the expense of the other.
I do not claim to have the solution to the Syrian war. People say what is happening in Syria is complicated.
In my opinion, there is nothing complicated about allowing a government to systematically starve and bombard hundreds of thousands of people to death. The targeting of hospitals, the indiscriminate bombardment of civilians -- that is not the solution.
Apathy and inaction on the part of the international community is also not the solution.
Ask any doctor, any nurse, any rescue worker on the ground what is one thing we can do to help them. They will all say the same thing: โStop the barrel bombs. Stop the missile strikes. Stop the bombing and the starving.โ
The answer is not solely more humanitarian aid. This conflict must be engaged with and solved by presidents and ministers. Without any global public and political will to do so, nothing will happen.
Whilst politicians fail we must act. Please add your name to demand that Syrian skies are cleared of Russian and Syrian government planes and their deadly cargo.

If we donโt act now there will be no hospitals left to save.
In solidarity,

# WithSyria, by Feral Things on Sept 2, 2016 20:08:37 GMT 1, Tomorrow is Massive Attack's homecoming gig in Bristol and in addition to the music (and the odd surprise) there is a tent with talks by a whole range of people, many of whom will be talking about Syria. For those not going here's a few things worth watching online...
Giles Duley is a fantastic photographer who has documented the lives of refugees fleeing the war in Syria. His TED talk is well worth a watch:
There is also a talk by Hassan Akkad, whose escape from Syria can be seen in the documentary 'Exodus: Our Journey to Europe'. The full documentary can be watched on the BBC iPlayer here but here's a trailer:
Kate Tempest's 'War Music' is about Iraq rather than Syria bit again it's well worth a listen:
And on the topic of Syria and Massive Attack there doesn't seem any better place to finish than 'Safe From Harm':

# WithSyria, by Bill Hicks on Sept 2, 2016 22:01:52 GMT 1, The Guardian broke a huge story this week -- a painstaking investigation by its journalists revealed that millions of dollars of United Nations aid money intended for Syrian civilians has ended up in the pockets of the Assad regime and his cronies. This is the very same regime that is responsible for 95% of all civilian deaths 1 and that is forcing one million people to live under medieval sieges.2
Take action now to demand an immediate response and action by the United Nations act.thesyriacampaign.org/sign/stop-taking-sides/?t=1&akid=341.168848.EOYKeW
While the UN was spending $5 million on a blood bank run by the Syrian defense ministry, doctors in besieged areas were donating their own blood to keep patients alive. There was no blood bank for them and little to no medical supplies because the Syrian government continues to target hospitals medicsunderfire.org/en in areas outside of its control with absolute impunity.
We need urgent change. In June more than 10,000 of us called on Ban Ki-Moon to get the UN to draw red lines on how it engages with the Syrian Regime. We asked that if the UN wasnโt able to get aid to those who needed it most, it should suspend cooperation with the Syrian regime.
We have yet to receive an answer. Meanwhile millions of the worldโs most vulnerable are relying on the UN to take a tougher stance on the Syrian regime so that they receive the aid that they desperately need.
Letโs make sure the UN doesnโt ignore their calls :https://act.thesyriacampaign.org/sign/stop-taking-sides/?t=3&akid=341.168848.EOYKeW
Demand action from the UN to get aid in Syria to those who need it most
The UN should represent the best of humanity. Instead it is giving millions of dollars to a regime that stands accused of the worst war crimes imaginable.
In the worst humanitarian catastrophe of a generation, it is absolutely crucial that aid goes to those who need it most, regardless of side.
A stronger UN that sets clear conditions on continued cooperation with the Syrian government will help get much-needed aid to thousands - if not millions - of civilians.

# WithSyria, by Bill Hicks on Sept 10, 2016 16:03:02 GMT 1, Right now hospitals are under attack in Syria. This month, a hospital was attacked every 18 hours.* This is totally unprecedented and itโs only getting worse.
Join the call for world leaders to stop these hospital attacks. medicsunderfire.org/en?source=em0909
My friend Mohammed Tennari directs a clinic in Sarmin, Idlib. This hospital was attacked just a few weeks ago. I spoke to him afterwards, and thankfully he and everyone else had survived. His hospital has been targeted over 15 times.
He said, โWe hear the bombs each hour. We do not know which will be our hour to be bombed.โ This reminded me of another conversation we had a year ago.
Medics Under Fire
Last October, I spoke to Mohammed the day after his hospital had been bombed and two of his colleagues were killed. He said, โWhen I am in the hospital, I feel like I am sitting on a ticking time bomb. It is only a matter of time until it explodes. The hardest part is knowing that these attacks will happen again.โ
He was right. A year has passed and they are still targets for Russia and the Assad regime.
The Geneva Conventions are designed to protect people who are injured and sick during conflict, and the health workers who treat them. And yet we are seeing the end of the Geneva Conventions, the end of medical neutrality, the end of the key pillars of international humanitarian law. Hospitals are the direct target of systematic state attacks.
The targeting of medical facilities by the Syrian regime and Russia amount to war crimes.
The international community has agreed the bombs need to stop. They have agreed that attacks on hospitals must be prevented, and that perpetrators need to be held accountable. The resolutions are in place. They simply need to be enforced.
Add your name and tell world leaders to protect hospital and medical workers. medicsunderfire.org/en?source=em0909 Thank you for taking a stand on this.

# WithSyria, by Feral Things on Sept 19, 2016 21:32:06 GMT 1, Netflix have produced a documentary about the White Helmets. They've been mentioned on this thread before but, if anyone's not familiar with their work, the White Helmets are the first on the scene to rescue people after barrel bombings and missile strikes in Syria. The documentary shows both the incredibly brave work that they do and the daily horrors that civilians have to try to endure.
If anyone wants to sign a petition calling for a No-Fly Zone in Syria or to donate to the White Helmets then they can do so here.

In this day of media propaganda from all quarters I am finding it harder and harder to figure out what the real truth is. Whilst the narrative is pro White Helmets in the West, both Syria and Russia decry them. Why would that be so if they are simply helping civilian people who have been bombed? I am not sure what to believe regarding Syria but I saw this video a few months ago and the above post reminded me of it. Posted in the interest of balance...for those who may be a little more questioning of the news they are being fed.

Posted in the interest of balance...for those who may be a little more questioning of the news they are being fed. I suspect that the Russian and Syrian governments are so critical because it is their aerial bombing which has been responsible for so many of the civilian deaths. I absolutely agree that we should question what we're told but in this instance the video seems to just rely on innuendo and very short edited video clips which do not provide any context. Some of the assertions, like that the White Helmets 'operate solely in terrorist areas' is just factually wrong (unless you accept Assad's definition of terrorist as anyone who opposes him). I think it's important to bare in mind that the 'research' for the Youtube video is by Vanessa Beeley, which has long been an unashamed apologist for the Assad regime. The US and UK have had a deeply shameful history of involvement in the Middle East since way before 2003, so personally I think it's a good thing that our governments are providing funding for something more positive like these search and rescue operations for a change.

# WithSyria, by misterx on Sept 25, 2016 3:25:27 GMT 1, I remember the tsunami of propaganda pre Iraq war regarding Saddam. WMD's, nukes, threat to the world etc etc. You may remember over a million people in Hyde Park protesting against war in Iraq or the fact that the US had no UN mandate to invade and how all this was ignored resulting in hundreds of thousands of deaths? So we know from the above experience that when theres a war to be had, things get murky and lies are told. Even by Western governments.
If you think the topic important enough, give 50 minutes and watch this video.
This is the US Peace Council, the US chapter of the World Peace Council.
UNESCO describes WPC as such: "Initiates or cooperates in activities to eliminate nuclear, chemical and biological weapons and to reduce conventional arms. Launches campaigns for solution of global problems. Acts for: dissolution of military blocs and pacts; dismantling of military bases and withdrawal of foreign troops; social and economic development, establishment of a new international economic order and a just solution of the problem of foreign debt; recognition of every nation's freedom of choice; establishment of a new international information and communication order; support of liberation movements; settlement of regional conflicts on the basis of respect for peoples' right to self determination."
They gave a press conference on the 9th August at the UN, having recently returned from a fact finding mission to Syria. Why would the media not cover this press conference? Surely the media have an obligation to be balanced? Do you think these people, who paid for the trip themselves, have anything to gain in speaking out against the propaganda that they argue is taking place?
In the interests of balanced reporting....no interest in arguing with anybody. Just putting this out there incase theres someone interested.

# WithSyria, by Bill Hicks on Oct 21, 2016 11:29:15 GMT 1, This Saturday in London we can take a giant stride towards stopping the heartbreaking violence in Syria.
Along with the biggest charities in the UK and the Mirror newspaper, weโve organised an event called โSave Aleppoโs Childrenโ outside 10 Downing Street starting at midday.
If huge numbers of us go down, weโll show the Prime Minister Theresa May and other politicians that they must do more to pressure Russia and the Syrian regime to stop this killing. Can you come down this Saturday, 22nd of October?
Yes, I'll try!
(If you canโt, please forward this email to your friends and share the event on Facebook) www.facebook.com/events/166330750490578/?active_tab=about
The pounding of Aleppo - hundreds of bombs dropped every day on a population roughly the size of Coventry - is one of the worst war crimes in living memory. This canโt be allowed to continue and itโs on every one of us who cares about the lives of innocent people to do what we can to stop the killing.
Letโs turn up in big numbers on Saturday and get our voices heard. This will be a very family friendly event so come along with everyone you can bring. Please bring a teddy bear if you can, weโll be placing a huge pile at the Prime Ministerโs door for the 100,000 children under siege in east Aleppo.
See you Saturday I hope.
This Saturday in London we can take a giant stride towards stopping the heartbreaking violence in Syria. It seems wrong to like this post. So I won't. Instead I'll say thank you for the timely reminder. The targeting of hospitals (intentionally) followed by the repeated assertion that rebel positions have been hit is inhumane.

# WithSyria, by Coach on Nov 25, 2016 23:25:10 GMT 1, I have posted about him before, but the surgeon David Knott has a foundation that is worth taking a look at and donating to if you feel inclined. He has worked regularly in hospitals in Aleppo helping the injured and training local doctors. His interviews on radio 4, particularly the PM program have been harrowing but essential listening.

# WithSyria, by Bill Hicks on Dec 1, 2016 16:02:55 GMT 1, East Aleppo is hell.
The remaining 250,000 civilians in East Aleppo are besieged on all sides, with the Syrian regime and Russia unleashing hell from the sky. Yesterday, 45 civilians were killed in a single attack. They had been fleeing for safety and their possessions lay strewn around their bodies. Civilians woke up this morning facing their 99th day under siege, food is running out. Faced with such horror it may be tempting to turn away, but you can act for our Syrian brothers and sisters.
The White Helmets and doctors inside Aleppo have called repeatedly for airdrops. The UK Government and its European allies could safely airdrop food and medical supplies into Aleppo tomorrow if the Prime Minister gave the green light. With our Royal Air Force already operational over Syria, we are calling on Theresa May to urgently authorise the airdropping of aid to besieged civilian populations. A majority of MPs have already expressed support for airdrops1. We need urgent action from our Government, every hour we delay the human suffering increases.
Please call the Foreign Office or Number 10 today and tell them to airdrop aid to Aleppo now. This is an emergency.
Foreign Office: 020 7008 1500 and Offices at Number 10: 020 7930 4433
This week the Syrian regime dropped leaflets on the besieged civilians warning that they faced โannihilationโ and that โeveryone has left you alone to face your doom and have offered you no helpโ. We must show the people of Aleppo they are not alone. Critically our Government must show the Assad regime and its ally Russia that they will not allow this massacre to continue unchecked. Airdrops are not nearly enough but they are a start.
It is utterly unconscionable that during the biggest aid operation in the UNโs history, and in the full glare of the worldโs media, nearly 100,000 children are facing the slowest, cruelest death because we cannot reach them with food and medical supplies.
We are out of excuses.

# WithSyria, by Bill Hicks on Dec 15, 2016 21:14:27 GMT 1,
photo uploading Dispatches from Aleppo: 16th December 2016
A deal to evacuate the remaining civilians trapped in East Aleppo began early this morning.
The evacuation went ahead despite reports earlier this morning of pro-regime forces firing on an ambulance carrying wounded civilians out of Aleppo. Five civilians were injured including White Helmet rescue workers Bebars Meshaal and Mohammed Zahra.
The first wave of wounded evacuees made it to the western Aleppo countryside where they will be moved to hospitals where they can be treated. 1,000 civilians have been evacuated so far. We have been told that convoys will return and collect more people for a second journey and continue like that.
We are happy that they are safer now and hope that safe passage will continue but it is important to remember that the people of East Aleppo have been forced to leave their homes, their lives, their memories, and their beloved city.
Civilians were in tears as they gathered to evacuate, many of them afraid they would end up in the hands of regime forces, AFP reported.
On the window of one of the buses transporting the evacuees someone had written, "One day we will return".
Despite the brutality of siege and non-stop bombardment with every type of weapon imaginable, the medics, rescue workers, parents, and entire communities refused to give up. They rebuilt hospitals time and time again, saved families from under the rubble of non-stop airstrikes, and opened schools and libraries underground. They are the true heroes of our time.

# WithSyria, by Coach on Feb 9, 2017 22:30:48 GMT 1, This has upset me today.
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-38918317
Can this wealthy and great country really only manage to cope with 350 unaccompanied children refugees? The Dubs amendment had the potential to make a fantastic change to so many children's lives. Shame on the government.
I was also concerned to hear on the radio that home sec Rudd accused those objecting of taking the moral high ground!! It seems that we now live in a society where one can be criticised for basing ones views on morals! Sad.

# WithSyria, by Bill Hicks on Mar 22, 2017 22:26:25 GMT 1, Dear friends,
The moment I was released from prison I made a promise.
In between the tears and hugs with my cell mates I promised not to forget them, to let the world know what itโs like down there.
I smuggled my friendsโ names out written with blood on torn shirt pieces. Names written with the help of my friend Nabil Shurbaji who died in detention.
I can only keep my promise with your help.
Tomorrow (Thursday), Channel 4 is broadcasting โSyriaโs Disappearedโ at 10pm. If youโre in the UK, please watch the 50-minute film and ask those around you to watch it too.
This is not an easy subject. But by making the time and the commitment to bear witness to these crimes, you are taking a critical step towards stopping them.
If you want to know what is happening in Syria today, this is at the very heart of it. Please watch this film tomorrow and tell others what is going on right now in this underground world.
