Faile fans - tell me why you love them!, by Chrisp on Mar 21, 2014 21:53:31 GMT 1, I will come back to why i love them later, but I just want to share this picture with you of my new set up. Their paintings make me happy and for some reason they never get boring. Little shrine going down right there, love it! The Dolk though is not something that would make me happybut would love it on my wall. Not saying i dont like it but, it's very dark and a good contrast +1

Faile fans - tell me why you love them!, by bitcoinbarry on Mar 21, 2014 22:02:10 GMT 1, I think the whole 'just because' argument put forward by fairplay1974 is altogether too simplistic. You might like King Crimson, or not, based on the noise they make. A little research might show you the depth and breadth of musical influence that fused to make that sound and the technical ability that enabled them to exploit weird and ever changing time signatures that made them stand out from contemporaries. Do you enjoy Manray simply because he made a girl look like a cello, or because he was a lynchpin between the Dadaists and surrealism? Initially, possibly the formerthen, likely, the latter. Warhol becomes much more interesting, for me at least, when you understand why he did what he did. 'The Man Who Fell to Earth' is not just about a thirsty alien. Modernism wasn't just daubs of 'like it or not' colour, it was a reaction to war, religion and consumerism. My point is, asking why someone likes something is absolutely the first step to enjoying it yourself, or understanding why you don't, and should be encouraged...

you do have valid points but i sway towards fairplay, maybe i'm a simpleton? I was at a party once and someone handed me a short story they'd written on blah d blah blah, it was full of variant words from a thesaurus i handed it back after a few lines and kindly explained i'd had a few too many wines but truth is i'd have felt the same sober, i don't think it should be over complicated

Minimalism is visually simple, but ideologically challenging. So can you be attracted to its aesthetic, but reject its philosophy? But, by rejecting its philosophy, can you fully understand its simplicity?
Concepts, ideas, thoughts, 'complications' - it's what separates us from apes...

Faile fans - tell me why you love them!, by behaviorist on Mar 22, 2014 0:45:53 GMT 1, Oh Faile, why do I love thee? Let me count the ways....
As with any aesthetic language, the response to theirs is visceral and difficult to intellectualize. It's subjective (what isn't, though), after all. I've always liked their execution; their hybrid of pop and comic book art; visually arresting imagery; social commentary; surrealism and humor. Like any great artist, they've invented their own iconography and visual style - many of their symbols are immediately recognizable and visceral (the Challenger). But for me, it all began with two words that never belonged in a sentence together until Faile came along.
Surfer + Horse =
Pictures are worth more than a thousand words.

Faile fans - tell me why you love them!, by jp on Mar 22, 2014 1:47:38 GMT 1, I really didn't like the Faile style in 2005-2006 when I was first exposed to them. But in late 2007 they released some fantastic prints, including Rampage and Stories of Love (blue) and I changed my mind. I think my favorite print is this one, and I've never seen it for sale. Does anyone know what it is called (shocking butterfly maybe?), and if it was an original print or canvas?

this thread has proved not to separate the Faile lovers and non-lovers, but those who think that engaging the brain in art appreciation is a good thing, and those who think otherwise. i engage both my 'just because' impulse and my brain when I enjoy art. i have no issue with those of you who choose to leave your brain at the door when you look at art, but there's really no need to bash those of us that do. engaging the intellect is not a crime.
my thanks to those of you that offered their thoughts constructively - I'm not a fan yet, but I'm already seeing things that I wasn't earlier, and that makes the thread worthwhile.

Faile fans - tell me why you love them!, by iamzero on Mar 22, 2014 9:17:20 GMT 1, I prefer the just because argument. I reckon if you look too deep into why you like something it loses the magic of why you like it. I was the same with Bast, hated it and then one day it just clicked.
I don't like King Crimson, I play guitar and used to work with a guy that was a really good technical bass player that loved Fripp and Crimson and banged on about about how good they were, I tried to hear what he heard but just simply didn't get it. I could hear how good they were but to me it had no warmth. I'm a huge Weller fan and love melody and lyrics, he writes stuff I click with. Why, because he does. I'm not gonna look too deep because it might ruin it.
I like Eine because I love type and letterforms and used to write graffiti?? There is that I guess but I love Charming Baker and have never took a shotgun to a rabbit or invited a gorilla in slippers around to my house to fight a small dog.
Don't dissect everything to find out why you like it. Just because is a valid reason.

We all have opinions and just because the ones I hold don't happen to match up with yours it doesn't make mine wrong.
More than happy to meet up and shoot the breeze with you though fella.

Faile fans - tell me why you love them!, by Deleted on Mar 22, 2014 10:11:17 GMT 1, I don't have to defend anything to you including my political views, they may be right of the centre but they certainly are not right wing and I'm affiliated with no one. We all have opinions and just because the ones I hold don't happen to match up with yours it doesn't make mine wrong. More than happy to meet up and shoot the breeze with you though fella. That was probably an unfair little dig, but it really fascinates me how you can champion such a politically charged art form and cite the likes of Paul Weller and be right of center. It honestly baffles me.

Faile fans - tell me why you love them!, by iamzero on Mar 22, 2014 10:22:48 GMT 1, Appreciate you saying it was an unfair dig. Right of centre means I don't agree with most of the left wing view of things not that I'm that t**t Nick Griffins best friend.
And another argument of just because... You don't have to be a left wing socialist to enjoy Billy Bragg in the same odd way that many skin heads that were siding with the National Front were bouncing around to The Specials??? I don't dig the politics of many musicians but it doesn't stop me liking the music.
I don't like the musical tastes or politics of some of my best friends but that doesn't stop us being friends. We put certain things aside and get along.
