Banksy Heavy Weaponry Canvas Auction at Phillips 8 April, by Unica on Mar 24, 2014 21:31:11 GMT 1, A very nice Heavy Weaponry or Weaponary is coming up at auction. Its a classic early canvas, i'm not to sure if there are any earlier canvas pieces than this. Either way, i'd like to have this. Just don't see to many Banksy canvases at this price. Looks to be in good condition.

Banksy Heavy Weaponry Canvas Auction at Phillips 8 April, by Unica on Mar 24, 2014 21:48:14 GMT 1, I saw a Lenin sell for £52k last October at auction from an edition of 25. It was sold at the beginning of BOTI, I think the seller could of got more if had waited a few months after the show to really get the benefit of all the Banksy publicity the show generated. But I imagine he had committed the canvas to the auction house before the show was announced in late September. www.bonhams.com/auctions/21300/lot/17/
Paranoid Pictures sold last month for £75k at auction from an edition of 25. www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/2014/contemporary-art-day-auction-l14021/lot.347.html
This is even rarer in an edition of 10, so i'm interested in what this will get. I'm not sure if its possible to get an edition canvas for less than £60k these days. Prices have escalated since BOTI it seems, signed standard stock large edition prints Laugh Now, Nola, LIITA sell for £14k-£20k and the only time the artist touched it was with a pencil. We know that Banksy actually had his hands on these canvases, some of them I hear he even constructed the canvas and frame, i'm surprised there isn't more of a price difference between a small edition canvas that he worked on and a signed print that he touched long enough to scribble a signature.

Banksy Heavy Weaponry Canvas Auction at Phillips 8 April, by chaserawr on Mar 24, 2014 21:52:16 GMT 1, Thanks jingle,
I think I have better chances of building a time machine and going back to 2005, than winning this auction.

Banksy Heavy Weaponry Canvas Auction at Phillips 8 April, by ironic mustache on Mar 25, 2014 4:17:39 GMT 1, you guys think this piece is better than the 2004 Heavy Weaponry? I feel like the elephant in this one is so much less defined and possibly even cartoony compared to 2004 one

Banksy Heavy Weaponry Canvas Auction at Phillips 8 April, by lee3 on Mar 25, 2014 4:44:51 GMT 1, you guys think this piece is better than the 2004 Heavy Weaponry? I feel like the elephant in this one is so much less defined and possibly even cartoony compared to 2004 one It's subjective so we can both have different opinions and neither one is wrong which is a lovely thing. I can appreciate anyone who argues this is edition 10 as opposed to 25, earlier, larger, and has multiple iconic images for the artist as opposed to one. Further to the second part of your question, many of us find the misspelling and anatomically crude/incorrect steps of that elephant most enduring. I like it for a host of reasons and I also like the edition 25 and many others that he's done over his career featuring the elephant and bomb. I've told people for years that this edition is a wonderful value to my eyes but that doesn't change the fact that they've languished on the secondary market at many a dealer. Some day that edition will catch fire and I'll think that i had my chance for ages, such is life.

I totally get the beauty of art being subjective and that does make looking at art much more fun.I suppose for me i just like the more detailed elephant in the latter versions as it just makes it feel like a strong elephant. I also never understood why such an iconic Banksy image, hell its his logo on the PC certs, languish around and not get snatched up. With the lack of work out there I can only imagine these pieces will draw interest from people looking to get into the Bansky game

Banksy Heavy Weaponry Canvas Auction at Phillips 8 April, by Unica on Mar 25, 2014 5:28:58 GMT 1, I can't say I have a favorite out of the two versions of the image, but I think If I had to choose either canvas I would go for the 2000 canvas. Its a lot smaller edition and I like the NY, London, Bristol references. Three cities that have been pivotal in his evolution as an artist. On a more practical side, the 2000 version probably took a bit more work than the 2004 version, not to mention as we saw on the New York stand, he is still knocking up Heavy Weaponry canvases in the 2004 style. I think there are several size editions as well, so that might hold the 2004 back a bit but probably not as I don't see them come up for sale often. I feel that these early canvases are probably under valued, and won't be surprised if this beats its estimate. Just not many canvases around for less than £100k it seems.

Take a closer look as those NY stall canvases as they were like the '13 version which he did for the Dicaprio charity auction last year. Similar elephant but a much larger bomb than the '03 or '04 edition 25.

Banksy Heavy Weaponry Canvas Auction at Phillips 8 April, by ironic mustache on Mar 25, 2014 5:49:51 GMT 1, Looks like once he defined the elephant he decided that was the stencil to keep using.
Was the version from 2000 an edition of 10 all exactly the same? Seems like the 2004 one although an edition of 25 were each unique or at least some were unique. I've seen a few facing to the right, others to the left, different colored canvas and different sizes.

Banksy Heavy Weaponry Canvas Auction at Phillips 8 April, by Deleted on Mar 25, 2014 12:34:57 GMT 1, yes its iconic i.e. early, yes its hand sprayed on canvas, yes its a small edition , yes the HW stamp now adorns offical banksy print output- but apart from that, why is this piece apparently so good ?
I dont get it / never have - can someone explain what is all about. what the attraction is ?
I didnt buy one back in the day when they were retail BTW

I didnt buy one back in the day when they were retail BTW I think you pretty much already answered your own question regarding attraction, plus it was created by the hand of Banksy. That seems to be enough for most people to want it, plus this piece is relatively affordable compared to some other pieces that have been auctioned off recently, i.e.. the heart for Haiti piece that Chris Martin bought $650k or the Van Gogh Eyes that went for several hundred thousand. And to answer another question the 2000 edition of 10 have variations throughout the edition, some have stripes, some I think have a different city scratched out, so they are from a series but somewhat unique.
