Sub £1000 road bike, by woomas on Mar 26, 2014 12:15:58 GMT 1, So I've been roped into a Birmingham to London bike charity bike ride in July....i'm going to need a new bike, is it safe to assume we have a few MAMIL's on the board? The amount of kit out there is mind boggling! I keep coming up with shortlist and changing my mind.... So far I've got Boardman Road Team Carbon, Cube Peloton Race and the Planet X Pro Carbon Shimano Ultegra on the list....i must admit the last one really does seem like amazing value, but id like to hear from anyone who has a bike in this price range.....and any tips on training would be appreciated. I have a Scott Hybrid currently which i will be using as a training bike.

Sub £1000 road bike, by mmmike on Mar 26, 2014 14:39:07 GMT 1, Hey wish I could help but I'm not up on prices in the UK. My road bike is a Cervelo R3. At least in Canada it is an amazing value and more bike than I deserve. I would highly recommend it if it is in your price range in the UK.
Boardman bikes have a cool factor here because they are not common and the Brownlee brothers are living legends and ride them. I don't have personal experience with them. I think Planet X has less of reputation.
I would say as you have a short list try them out and see what is the best fit (size) for comfort and go to a store that will swap out components if needed (wider or narrow bars, different crank lengths etc.) and one that has a knowledgeable person to help out with the Fit. If you are comfortable on the bike you will love it. If you are not you won't even if it is the best bike in the world.
But try the R3 if you can. It was updated for 2014 so you can probably get a deal on an old one.

Sub £1000 road bike, by Hubble Bubble on Mar 26, 2014 15:32:07 GMT 1, I have an R3 road bike, Mike… there's no way on earth they will be anywhere close to a grand. I ride the Cervelo R3, Cervelo P2C TT bike, Specialized Allez winter road bike and Specialized Langster Fixie (plus a couple of cheeky mountain bikes)
Woomas - everyone I know who has the Boardman has been super impressed. Focus also have a good name too but I'm not sure what they have in this price point.
I would visit your LBS (local bike shop) and sit on a few to try out the geometry. Find one that feels comfortable and progress that forward. I'd also try to buy from a shop rather than the internet. You'll get all the help with sizing and a bike fit too once you have the machine.
Good luck and shout if you need more advice.

Prior year 105 versions are about that price here but it is a Canadian company and there wearhouse is 30 mins away so I think we get the best close out prices.

Sub £1000 road bike, by woomas on Mar 26, 2014 23:15:52 GMT 1, Thanks for the pointers all! I'm afraid the R3 is well out my bracket! But the Boardman seems like a real option as well. fair point Plurker, no way can I justify 3k, but from what I've read about the Btwin tribal kit it seems like exceptional value. I really need to get my arse down the bike shop and see what tickles my fancy (and if they do 0%, then that would be just dandy, no cycle to work scheme at our place) Alternatively if anyone is in the market for 2011 Quadangle fully kitted out with all the good stuff, then that might do the trick.

Sub £1000 road bike, by Adman on Mar 27, 2014 10:55:12 GMT 1, Hi Woomas, This might be helpful?
road.cc/content/buyers-guide/71216-2014s-hottest-£500-£900-road-bikes
road.cc/content/news/63270-best-£900-£1000-road-bikes
Anyone I've spoken to re Boardman have said they are great. Good spec and good value. It's worth getting a bike fitting session. There is nothing worse than a bike that's too large or small on a long ride. Good luck with the charity ride!
(I had probs posting the links. You'll need to add http:// before road.cc)

Sub £1000 road bike, by Deleted on Mar 27, 2014 23:07:24 GMT 1, I've got a Verenti Rhigos 02. Think it was £1200 and is all carbon. It's built not as an out and out racer but is for sportive rides so has a slightly more relaxed geometry on it.
I can recommend this bike. It's not in the same league as the Cervelo bike but it does me nicely : )
