Ernest Zacharevic π±πΉ Penang, Malaysia Street Art , by Deleted on Jul 25, 2014 13:51:01 GMT 1, Any artist worth a damn, doesn't just appear overnight with an explosion of interest. Most of the top names (Banksy, Os Gemeos, Barry McGee, Kaws etc) took years to reach the top. I know the market is completely different now, but you can still draw some lessons. Be careful of artists who suddenly crank up their prices overnight / in a short space of time. This forum is built on hysteria and there are many sheep who are happy to follow the tune of certain galleries whilst the going is good. Surely it can't be doing the artists involved any good in the long run. I've seen so many booms, followed by busts in the last 7 years. The market on this forum is fickle, and is manipulated by self interest. Buyer beware. Zach's prices have stayed the same since the Style Wars release/before that. Prints for 150GBP-400GBP, originals for ~1,000GBP upward.
And now he's doing a stencil at Contraband for 300 GBP.
I'm sure a lot of people offering the big amounts of money are doing so based on hype. That said, it's hard to deny that Zach has potential.

Glad you sold it anyhow.

Ernest Zacharevic π±πΉ Penang, Malaysia Street Art , by alittle on Jul 25, 2014 14:11:30 GMT 1, It is with great sorrow that I present this piece to you today.
Circumstances in my life have changed since yesterday after an unfortunate series of events. While I was out shopping for vibrating butt plugs, I ran over a pile of nails that some wanker left on the road, which left me with 4 flat tires. After I took a taxi home, I was greeted at the door by my significant other, who told me that our pet squirrel needs emergency wisdom teeth removal to the tune of 3K. As I came inside, I realized that I am out of wall space and the art police decided that I need to sell off a few pieces. Too many bills to pay, and I just can't justify keeping this so I am offering it to the forum at a bargain price of 5000GBP starting offer.
Please send your bids to me over PM. Discretion assured.

If I was Ernest Zacharevic (or any new artist), I wouldn't be to keen on my 'loyal' fans trying to hype me up and promote spiraling prices on the secondary market. It's not healthy. I wasn't trying to hype in here; was only trying to clarify what the prints are actually selling for, I don't see how that information is ever hurtful to people on these boards.
I also think a lot of the confusion is b/c people think Ernest is an artist that is only being hyped by Graffiti Prints, whereas in reality he actually has a large following in Asia (which I guess is hard for fans in Europe to understand since they haven't heard of him).
Really though: buy the art if you like it, don't buy it if you don't like it. That's always been the rule.

I hope he makes the right choices regarding his immediate future vs longevity / sustainability of his career in the many years to come. It's a shame to have seen so many artists believe there own hype and falter. Lets hope this current 'feeding frenzy' is carefully managed and side stepped without scuppering his career. Always think long term Very, very well put.

Ernest Zacharevic π±πΉ Penang, Malaysia Street Art , by samfrost on Jul 25, 2014 18:26:48 GMT 1, Let's not forget in 2008/09 when Banksy pieces were being "bought in" at auction. Personally, I think that Banksy will be the only artist historians will recall from this era.
You need a "game changer" artist to cement a works price and reputation (think Warhol/Basquiat and their differing styles and influence on artists...). As many have noted on here, it took Banksy a while to reach that level. Nearly all of these chaps with spraycans are heavily influenced by Banksy.
I do think that these days with the proliferation of the internet/instagram, we will see more boom and bust cycles.
With that being said, I really hope folks aren't getting sucked into the print flip cycle. Once the music stops it gets really ugly....look at Micallef print prices at auction over a 5 yr period (UGLY). For me, I buy what I like and hang on my walls end of story.

What's the story with Micallef? Everyone keeps mentioning him as a fail story on here. I thought I just saw his print sell on the wanted thread for a decent amount?
Were people hyping him up and spending like 4,000 pounds or something at one point?
And mostly agree re: art history and Banksy. Shepard Fairey, too, but yeah, you know.

Ernest Zacharevic π±πΉ Penang, Malaysia Street Art , by samfrost on Jul 25, 2014 19:20:41 GMT 1, One example about Micallef (plenty of others): 21st Century Love Print went for $22k USD (hammer price) at Dreweatts in June 2008. Then went for $1.8k (Phillips 2009) and $5.5k (Bonham's 2011). All for a print edition of 95.
Laz hyped the heck out of the poor guy (also likely pumped prices at auction). He has not recovered since IMO and has been a stigma attached to his prices.

I mean, I'd think at a certain point people would be able to look past Laz hype, but there's always those buyers I suppose.
That said, anyone who wants to buy my Style Wars for $22kUSD, c'mon down.

I think the only hype around artists at the time (and still) comes from the forums and secondary market sellers.

Ernest Zacharevic π±πΉ Penang, Malaysia Street Art , by curiousgeorge on Jul 26, 2014 23:40:59 GMT 1, Zach's prices have stayed the same since the Style Wars release/before that. Prints for 150GBP-400GBP, originals for ~1,000GBP upward. And now he's doing a stencil at Contraband for 300 GBP. I'm sure a lot of people offering the big amounts of money are doing so based on hype. That said, it's hard to deny that Zach has potential. I remember when everyone thought Beejoir would go on to be 'the next Banksy'. Or when Adam Neate was the 'new Francis Bacon'. Or D*Face was the heir apparent to Banksy's crown. Anybody want a Shell Blood For Oil for Β£3k? If I was Ernest Zacharevic (or any new artist), I wouldn't be to keen on my 'loyal' fans trying to hype me up and promote spiraling prices on the secondary market. It's not healthy. Sustained growth over a long period of time is much better. And I'm not sure I would trust fly by night galleries to have my best interest at heart. The 'enjoy graffiti' piece became a print before the paint on the street piece had dried. The pieces I've seen from the contraband show look like they're from artists who have just read a dummies guide to urban art. Old, tired and cliched. All I'm saying is, don't trust people on this forum. There is so much manipulation going on, it's sickening. I have nothing against Ernest, yes he has potential (not really my kind of thing) - let's just hope he's not another victim of the urban art money making scheme scene. QFT
