Safest and best way to roll and ship a print?, by waXology on Apr 22, 2014 15:54:36 GMT 1, Hi all,
I thought I would see what everyone's thoughts were on the best way to ensure a print is rolled, tubed and mailed safely. I've seen lots of well packaged prints and some bad ones in my time.
I'll be mailing out a Banksy to the states very shortly so wanted to ensure I was doing it to the highest standard. I would usually lay down brown paper (forget the name), followed by tissue paper, then lay the print on it. I'll then lay some tissue paper on top of the print and gently roll ensuring the tissue paper rolls with it. in the end it should be nicely rolled with the brown paper. From there ill put some tape across the brown paper ends so it stays rolled
Once in the tube i would put more tissue paper in each end so the entire space between print and end caps is filled.
Have also seen this on EB:
Anyone have any ideas, tips, thoughts?

Safest and best way to roll and ship a print?, by chichi carter on Apr 22, 2014 16:34:02 GMT 1, Whenever I ship a print of high value I always double tube it. Smaller tube in a bigger tube with bubble wrap or foam around the smaller tube in 2 or 3 spots (depending on the lenght) so it doesn't constantly move around and to have some space all around it during shipping. That way if the bigger tube takes a hit the smaller tube won't be affected. Bomb proof!

I'd be hard pressed finding an even wider tube to go around it. But great idea.. never thought of that.
So in the EB example he doesn't use the tissue paper....?

I believe I put a 4 inch tube in a 6 inch tube or something close to that so you have 1/2 inch to an inch of space around the smaller tube.

Safest and best way to roll and ship a print?, by thisisanton on Apr 22, 2014 19:33:22 GMT 1, I just got something from a gallery and they used something that resembles a 6 inch PVC pipe. And inside was another tube. No way what was going to be crushed.

Safest and best way to roll and ship a print?, by mandingo on Apr 23, 2014 13:26:24 GMT 1, I wouldn't double tube an expensive piece. Tube it the put it in one if those triangular boxes. This stops the tube rolling. You git to remember it's going to be shoved around on conveyer belts so the less movement the better

Safest and best way to roll and ship a print?, by Dibbs 45 on Apr 23, 2014 19:29:31 GMT 1, Be careful wrapping it too well. If the recipient has to take an hour to undo it, there's a greater chance they will damage it unwrapping it, depending on excitement and patience . I've had some that have gone so over the top that I had to actually to try and find the print in the wrapping. This said this is a good thread and something we all need knowledge on. Some great ideas.
