Advice on an artist missing deadline on a commission, by tommyb on Apr 28, 2014 10:56:32 GMT 1, So I had arranged for a commission from an artist (don't want to name and shame) and it was agreed they would start the piece in early march, they messaged to say they had alot on and it would be delayed once the date came, they still have not made a start as far as I'm aware. They messaged at the start of April to say they would be in touch soon about the piece but have heard nothing since, I have already paid in full so was wondering how would go about this situation, would you just wait it out as they you know they are a busy artist so kind of expected it to take awhile or would you reguard this as taking the piss and ask to be refunded?

Advice on an artist missing deadline on a commission, by Hairbland on Apr 28, 2014 10:58:08 GMT 1, I'd stop messaging and pick up the phone. But "just to check in." I think part of being an artist is missing deadlines, poor scheduling, last minute overnighters and such.

I think part of being an artist is missing deadlines, poor scheduling, last minute overnighters and such. Yeah good call, they did say they were squeezing to a packed schedule so I am quite sympathetic towards the delay. I am in their area over the weekend anyway so suppose I'll just pop in to their studio and ask then. Cheers for the adivce, seems the best way to go about things.
I am pretty envious of anyone with a job where it is okay to be 7 weeks over schedule

Advice on an artist missing deadline on a commission, by Art Fan 2011 on Apr 28, 2014 11:50:05 GMT 1, Depending who the artist is, if its something special from someone special id wait it out, delays can happen, and I guess they have kept you informed along the way so as long as your happy to wait for the piece id do so. They must be in demand if there that busy which is also good sign! Hope it works out!

Advice on an artist missing deadline on a commission, by curiousgeorge on Apr 28, 2014 11:52:45 GMT 1, Patience is everything
I've been waiting 3+years and paid in full. Very good things come to those who wait, that said the artist is golden. Being golden is his saving grace else I would've called the A-Team long ago
Edit: Worth a mention the artist has been in touch once or twice.I knew at the time I wouldn't be front of the queue
Fella been busy in New York or somethingโฆ

I agree with the sentiment though, just relax and let them produce it at their own speed.

Advice on an artist missing deadline on a commission, by tommyb on Apr 28, 2014 12:06:32 GMT 1, Yeah, I'm in no rush to get it and it's an artist I really like so it seems like it will be worth the wait, also I have a rather large purchase arriving next week so a delay might work in my favour, the art police will be angry enough about one turning up never mind two. Also 3 years! This sounds like a pretty impressive piece, must be rather special. Gongrats on getting that one sorted whoever it is, I don't really want to know, will probably have too much art envy.

Advice on an artist missing deadline on a commission, by Neate Michael on Apr 28, 2014 12:07:40 GMT 1, I have a commission with an artist, and he was very honest, that he felt spent after his last show, and was only just starting to feel it again, before his next show, and could I wait till after the summer... I was certainly happy to wait. Means I get to see the new body of work, and maybe use that as inspiration.

Advice on an artist missing deadline on a commission, by stvro22 on Apr 28, 2014 13:28:45 GMT 1, I say cut him/her a but more slack. It's not good when people don't communicate well but creativity can be a variable hard to determine sometimes. If by the end of May you hear nothing then at least push to get a status update. I've waited 4 extra months for a commission at which time the artist included a little something extra for the delay. Never know.

Advice on an artist missing deadline on a commission, by tommyb on Apr 28, 2014 14:11:34 GMT 1, I recieved an email from them so one assumes they must have been looking at this forum, turns out they had a very notable reason for the delay so now I feel like abit of a dick. On the plus side the post man brought me a nice tube so I am heading out to the framers. Thanks for the advice folks and I hope you all have a pleasant day.

I am pretty envious of anyone with a job where it is okay to be 7 weeks over schedule I manage a successful musician where sometimes I can't reach him for 1-3 months by phone, text, messages on his home phone, skype or other...drives me crazy...then we speak and all is good and he apologizes and says "well, I'm the artist". Often it's due to depression fed by artistic insecurities amplified by chocolate, coca cola, video games and too much smoke!
