Anyone here climb Killmanjaro/visit Tanzania ?, by Phear Loathing on May 14, 2014 17:39:28 GMT 1, Very seriously considering doing a trip to Tanzania next February and am curious to hear the thoughts of others on climbing Kill and also just visiting Tanzania.
How long did you stay? Things you would recommend? Not recommend?
Would you do the trip over?
Any alternative "trips of a lifetime" you would recommend instead of Africa?
Looking forward to responses!

Anyone here climb Killmanjaro/visit Tanzania ?, by Jeezuz Jones Snr on May 14, 2014 21:14:34 GMT 1, I did one of the sacred mountains in china Mount Taishan, which is easy compared to kili as its not as high and all steps, amazing place though..so each time I get back to china I wouldn't mind climbing the others. But ultimately would like to do higher mountains, would love to do Fuji (if Carl pilkington can climb it anyone can!!) in Japan and kilamanjaro. My mate climed Kilimanjaro (did the easy climb), he said it was amazing experience... Do it fella and post is some pics

Not exactly on subject but if any of you get a chance :tiger leaping gorge' is one of the most impressive experiences of my life. Its more a slightly dangerous hike than a climb..its in China too. I went 6-7 years ago when my bro was working in china and was amazing, and when had my internship in China 2 years ago went again and more mainstream but still amazing views (and most fitness levels can do it)

Anyone here climb Killmanjaro/visit Tanzania ?, by Deleted on May 14, 2014 23:25:44 GMT 1, Michael Palin was asked the question 'If you could only visit one country ever, which would it be ?'.
Kenya was the answer.
I have crossed the border of Kenya into Tanzania, it looks epic. However I preferred Thailand to Kenya for beauty myself. But it just depends what you want to do. the best fun I've had was Snowboarding in Switzerland. I just turned up no lessons and went to the top of a Red run. It hurt real bad, but kept at it and a day later I was flying. I also loved going to Australia for the Ashes in 2003/04.
The people in the US were great.
I've done some climbing and a few mountains. If my knees were up to it I would go for Everest. Sadly not. Whatever you do, have fun.

Anyone here climb Killmanjaro/visit Tanzania ?, by johnnyh on May 15, 2014 6:08:12 GMT 1, Been to Kenya and Tanzania but did not do Killimanjaro far too much like hard work for me did Safari's balooning over the Serengeti / Maasai Mara and beaches and cocktails if you get some time after Killi go to Zanzibar cracking little island just off the coast of Tanzania great place to chill out
You can trek in Thailand done it many many years ago. You will love it you can go up and through the Golden Triangle superb fun. Lot of the tourist stuff about the north of Thailand directs you to Chang mai but you really want to go to Chang Rai. Smaller more enthnic etc etc not such a tourist beaten path. But as with all Thailand they know tourism etc so language and food is superb. The jungle trecking is mega. Tale or too to tell and remember. Still have some old antique opium pipes on the wall

Anyone here climb Killmanjaro/visit Tanzania ?, by Deleted on May 15, 2014 6:58:25 GMT 1, Very seriously considering doing a trip to Tanzania next February and am curious to hear the thoughts of others on climbing Kill and also just visiting Tanzania. How long did you stay? Things you would recommend? Not recommend? Would you do the trip over? Any alternative "trips of a lifetime" you would recommend instead of Africa? Looking forward to responses! Sadly, due to situation in Kenya (Al-Shabaab, terror attacks, independentist parties at Kenyan coast) you are better of visiting Tanzania and not Kenya. I just got an email from our Embassy saying most towns at Kenyan coast has been listed as orange/red zones... Western media don't relay much the local news; but we had 4 bomb blast last weekend; more than 3000 somalis locked up in cages in stadium; police entered into a killing spree; and religious communities are disliking each other...
So despite the fact that Kenya is much more beautiful than Tanzania (most of Tanzania are plains while Kenya is cut in half by the magic rift), I would avoid Kenya if you go with family... but this said, Kenya is a pretty safe country.
Climbing Kili is easy, it takes few days but the climb is easy (unless you have high sickness). For a more challenging climb, people here choose the Mt Kenya (Lenana)... Now, many of my friends have been complaining about services provided by local climber/agencies; they say that climbing experience can be horrible (poor services, bad food, etc.); even one of my friend had to cancelm the trip after climber went on strike.
So beware, if you go for cheap alternative; you may get a cheap service.
As Jonny said, usually people go for a full beach-safari; that is safari and coral beaches. Same remark, Kenya has better beaches (many with coral barriers). You better go for safari first (because it is exhausting) and beach at the end.
If you wanna stay in Tanzania, then climbing Kili is nice... a visit of Ngorongoro crater is a must... if not then the Serengeti plains (or Masai Mara in Kenya)... and for the coast, Zanzibar island is great and fun as there is possibility to enjoy the beach and visit the town for cultural tour.
Plenty of things to see around. And lots in Kenya (some good marines park, best parks in the world in the middle of Rift)
Otherwise, Ethiopia is also a splendid country !
This guy is looking for people to climb the kili

Anyone here climb Killmanjaro/visit Tanzania ?, by sakyamuni on May 15, 2014 7:54:10 GMT 1, It's hard to say what's best in Africa. For sure, Kenya, Tanzania, but also Uganda (mountain gorillas) have plenty to offer. Southern Africa is amazing too, maybe even more spectacular: Botswana (Okavango delta !), South Africa, Namibia, Mozambique is also great, and all combine different scenery and great local culture. Horn of Africa is also great, Ethiopia being the must and the easiest (I don't really advise to visit Somalia...). Central Africa could be on top of the list, but security situation is not at its best... For culture, nothing beats west Africa, but again, due to the current security situation, not a great holiday destination... Now it's your choice....

Anyone here climb Killmanjaro/visit Tanzania ?, by Deleted on May 15, 2014 9:21:19 GMT 1, I climbed Kilimanjaro last year (January 2013) and I can honestly say it's the best thing I've ever done in my life.
I climbed with Peak Planet and did the 8 day Lesotho route. My main advice would be firstly that you get what you pay for so cheap company could mean poor food and tents and secondly don't do too short a trip. Your body needs time to acclimatise and the success rate for a 4 day trip is a lot lower than the longer trips.
It's not cheap but you'll never ever forget the trip so go for it : )

Regarding what thebigboss has said.
I wouldn't go to Kenya because right now, because of the way the Somali's are being treated. Similar to Amin, Mugabe and even Hitler imo. Having land, property, businesses, dignity and life taken away from them. Just because they are Somali. Very scary time when like me you have a big Somali family in Kenya.

Anyone here climb Killmanjaro/visit Tanzania ?, by misterx on May 15, 2014 10:25:00 GMT 1, Ive spent a lot of my life in Africa and agree with others that it really is a majestic continent.

Very worrying indeed... police have licence to kill, control and extort Somali and Kenyan-Somali; local youth have joined milicia to chase "terrorists" and muslims in villages (many innocents have been mobbed top death); and we are slowly seeing a rift in population based on religion (spread by both communities).
Even on ads such as house for rent, you can read "no Somali"
There is indeed a large number of Kenyan-Somali who have been told they are no more Kenyan (despite having grand parents and parents born in Kenya) and as you said, they are loosing everything.
I hope Kenya will not become Nigeria or RCA.
We are indeed a Fail State and govt response has just been bad !!
