It's a lot like record collecting!, by settingson on May 30, 2014 11:49:28 GMT 1, Following my first few weeks on here I have decided that the art world is very much like my record collecting experience! Funny really as I probably wasn't expecting it to be like that. I see it a bit like this but it's just as a light hearted comparison and I am not meaning to be judgemental in any form: In the main new artists come along doing their own thing and those good enough get a solid following who like their work, then they get noticed, picked up and taken on by a label/gallery and then all new releases, usually limited, get sold out quickly as word spreads and popularity rises and those that were there in the beginning usually have a few rarities in their hands from the early days which they cherish. Prices get competitive especially for early releases and then the offloading starts on the auction sites with prices escalating and those with the cherished items start to see the £s in their eyes and their cherished items aren't so cherished anymore! The next few releases come out in bigger numbers and although often priced higher they are more accessible so are brought by a wider and more diverse population. Next comes the interesting bit as new bands now sometimes only have a shelf life of only a few months or so before the aftermarket starts to fall, levels out or collapses altogether! I get the feeling that the shelf life is a little longer in the art world but still follows a similar route apart from one or two that really break through. I imagine there are examples of all 3 experiences in everyone's portfolios! I have loads of vinyl of what were going to be the next big thing which are quite worthless now but the times spent at gigs, discussing it with friends and appreciating it live on! After all the releases yesterday it just struck me as being similar. I have to stress that I have collected records because I love my live gigs and music and if in future I get half the enjoyment from my future art purchases I will be happy!

It's a lot like record collecting!, by gilsteph on May 30, 2014 15:21:59 GMT 1, What you packing primarily in the racks there gilsteph? I have catholic tastes mate. It ranges from soundtracks (death waltz label is great for art AND vinyl!) but really lots of different things. So far this week its been The The, Swans, the Heads, Acid Mother Temple and LCD sound system (the RSD live album is immense!)
Always up for new music (try and see a couple of bands a month)

It's a lot like record collecting!, by daveart on May 30, 2014 18:10:55 GMT 1, the only thing i would add is it is the low price of the unknown artists that allows for the collecting side of things to be fun. you arent risking the kids food budget or the mortgage payment.. its something interesting to buy, hang onto for a while and maybe shift on when needed. The hard thing about this whole forum is the original artists that got it all going are now so expensive that it is impossible to 'collect.' how could anyone starting out today hope to collect Banksy, FAILE, DFACE, Shep, etc originals.. or even prints really.. it was overall more fun when everything was under 1000 in price and you had a pretty solid market to sell things on .. neither gaining or losing a ton.. as the OP states.. the real fun is in the chase, the community, and the enjoyment of having things around that you like.

It's a lot like record collecting!, by turnsintoashes on May 31, 2014 16:31:47 GMT 1, I've been a record collector (punk/indie/hardcore/etc) for about the last 15 or so years...I'm now selling a lot of my collection minus the essentials to fund art purchases. Also selling a lot of my non-essential guitar gear too. Not sure what that says about me...

It's a lot like record collecting!, by yoyosh on May 31, 2014 16:39:28 GMT 1, As someone who works in music, it's nice to see so many consumers still out there! I've sold off most of my collection of vinyl and CDs as we are in the digital age, but have held onto about 6-700 records and 500+ CDs. Nice set ups everyone above!

So much of it doesn't see the light of day anymore. I'm pretty much the punk/indie collector too! Starting to drift towards iTunes for newer material these days although still buy vinyl.
