Off topic: RUGS , by Deleted on Jun 2, 2014 16:57:21 GMT 1, I would go for an Isfahan, but I would get an old one, have a look at them anyhow, more knots per square inch as possible so tight underneath, very fine things, get a design you like looking at like artwork though, dont go for a Tree of Life design, boring after a year, and dont get talked into buying, just buy what you want.
Kashgai good too, harder wearing.
Dont hang it on wall, use it, they run tractors over them there and wash new ones in rivers to run them in.
Check Ali's shop here (dont let the ebay link fool you, hes been doing this for donkeys years), he sells new and antique and he knows what hes on about ie no bull.
Fair prices too. www.ebay.co.uk/usr/a2zrug-uk?_trksid=p2047675.l2559

Off topic: RUGS , by johnnyh on Jun 2, 2014 17:33:27 GMT 1, Gonna give you what I know chap. Lived there for a long while before.
There are a couple of things to check. Persian tend to be higher quality than Kashmeri. But in both cases couple of things to check Hand made or machine made. Obviously price helps identify this but the true way is to turn it over. On a hand made the pattern comes through on the other side. On machine it tends not to show through
The hand made are hand knotted the number of knots highlights the quality they go from about. 40 to 300 that's knots per sq inch around a 100 knot is good quality
note machine made are not really regarded as authentic although are very very nice and harder wearing in general Likewise the wol wear harder than the silk which are more sensitive if your gonna walk on it a lot. natural dyes are more authentic but again do not keep the fastness of colour as well as the non natural dyes Not a massive problem in Dubai asit is monitored but do check if you want a persian rug that it is made in Iran.
they are available in plenty of places so cannot recommend one but a good place to start is in the City Centre as they ha a good Arabic traditional area in apart of the all with plenty repeats and they will get them out and show ou loads of them and through all the patter. You can then look else where and get a feel fort things but that's not bad place to buy not the cheapest bue venue as been ther long time and quite straight.
negotiate hard so do not buy till you get a feel for pricing and how far people down then go back

Off topic: RUGS , by james on Jun 2, 2014 18:20:17 GMT 1, Many thanks for this JohnnyH, thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed post. I have been looking at 100% wool as well as silk just because they are more harder wearing but still have my options open, i found that a 100% wool rug from reputable maker can be just as much if not higher priced than a silk rug with as many knots if not more per square inch. i've come across something called a 'chaharla' 4 layer thread rug?

Off topic: RUGS , by misterx on Jun 3, 2014 1:16:24 GMT 1, Another thing to note, which may sound silly, is always lay the rug down flat and look if its sitting flush with the ground and is symmetrical.
Perhaps 5K rules this out, but from my experience I have seen a lot of kelims/ Persians that have a slight "puckering" for want of a better word, causing the rug to slightly lift off the floor, which one sometimes overlooks due to the excitement in seeing such beautiful pieces...

Off topic: RUGS , by misterx on Jun 3, 2014 8:24:57 GMT 1, I have a few Afghan War rugs in a box in my garage. The one above seems to be made from silk, whereas mine are wool. I know in the 80's they were also made in Pakistan, by Afghans in exile. I have two sons, so they had one each in their bedrooms. They looked great.
